I’m from Argentina, last week I was for the first time in Fort Lauderdale for vacation, and since I was looking for some fun, I decided to visit this place! Wow! That was one of the best experiences in my life! Great place, great atmosphere, and hot guys! All I was looking for!

I’ve been to the Slammer in Los Angeles many many times, and while I prefer the LA version of Slammer, this one isn’t bad. It has several of the same components — suck ramps, bj alleys, private booths, slings, benches, posts, glory holes, etc — everything you would need for a fun sleazy time. I found the staff to be friendly and helpful. Unlike LA, there is a BYOB bar — if you bring your own alcohol, the bartenders will mix/pour you a drink if you like. There is also a pool table. They do have a better locker setup than the LA Slammer, but unfortunately there is no video area that plays non porn movies — it’s a nice place to take a break between the action in the LA Slammer. This Slammer does not provide free lube packets — you have to bring your own or buy some there — it can be very inconvenient in a moment of passion! They do provide condoms, but they all seem on the smaller side — no magnums available unfortunately. But overall, you should have a good time here!

It’s hard to review a gay sex club because no matter how good a man looks, sometimes he can go to a place like this and simply not find anyone attractive or reciprocally interested. Let’s set aside that qualification for the moment and focus on layout, staff, lighting, music and bathrooms. I highly recommend Slammer. The lighting is seductive. The arrangements of platforms, cubbyholes, labyrinth, banquettes, etc has been altered over the years but those changes have been thoughtful and have made the farthest area in the rear of the club a more enjoyable space. The staff is cordial. Don’t be put off by the stern or brusque attitude of the guys who are behind the window when you check in. They have so much to deal with and are often handling a long line of out-of-town and foreign visitors who have been out drinking. Be sure to check your valuables including your car keys and phone when you are checking in. Be sure to tip the staff. The bathrooms are large and never out of soap and paper towels. There are two shower stalls but I have never seen them used. This is not a bath house. I think establishing an area for watersports would be an improvement because those who are into that will sometimes commandeer a stall and leave behind a wet floor. What do I dislike about Slammer? I do not like the area with the round upholstered banquette on which some men perch themselves for the entire evening with their butts fanned out to be violated by anyone walking by. It’s gruesome, but mercifully, I can avoid that room, which seems to be almost always crowded, perhaps just for the spectacle. I should pause here to say a word about safe sex. I have seen unsafe sex here, but I can’t blame Slammer for that. Men tend to go to sex clubs after a few drinks or whatever. They are not always making sensible judgements. It is incumbent on the individual patron to conduct himself for his own self-preservation and respectfully of others. There are buckets of condoms available. Unfortunately, there should also be adjacent buckets of lube, but no. There are many men who wisely limit the kind of sex they have at a place like this to «everything but anal.» I also do not like loud disco music at a sex club. Sadly with the exception of one venue in Montréal(The 5018) one is always subjected to screaming divas at places like this when that is the last thing you want in your ear. Overall, the atmosphere is very conducive to sexual adventure. You can choose to seclude yourself with someone, join a group, make a show or just watch others. There is also a locker room — sporadically attended — if you want to change into some sort of leather costume or get naked but most guys are in street clothes with their shirts off. There is an area for smokers. The bar is now smoke free. Bring your own booze, They store it and serve it to you. Who goes to Slammer? Everyone, even the men who swear they have never been there. And their husbands. The key to doing Slammer is to go there with the right attitude. Sociable, smiling, gracious and kind to those around you. If you are grim or depressed, stay home and work through it. If you are up for celebrating your sexuality with hot guys from all over the world, Slammer is for you.

This place is every bit as good as the one in Los Angeles. And it’s pretty similar, even with the yellow and black number sign as the only identification on the outside. I’ve been to both many times and I have to say, the people at the desk have always been fine. They might not be warm and fuzzy but they do their job and I have never had a problem with them. The bartenders are very nice and even the guy who cleans up in the back will say hello when I say hi to him. Make no mistake, this is not a bar or a dance club. It is a gay men’s sex club. If you’re looking for anything else, go somewhere else. It is not trying to be upscale or hip or trendy. It is not the place where you go to be seen or to have your picture taken. Cell phones aren’t even allowed in the place. You go here for one reason and one reason only. That being said, I’ve always found it to be an enjoyable way to spend an evening. It’s sleezy(auto-correct made that say«sleepy») and a bit dirty, so wash your hands when you’re finished. And there are condoms everywhere so there is no excuse for not using protection. And have fun.

Being remodeled this week so it’s only half the size. I would wait until Halloween to go there. Well we went on Halloween. Evidentially the remodel was for a dance floor. Funny. A dance floor for after hours dancing. I have never seen boys after hours there wanting to dance. Could be the kiss of death for this formally unique establishment After a year of recovery. This place is back on track

Slammer has an interesting sex history to its backgroud. Once upon a time there was an infamous straight swinger’s(read sex) club known as Plato’s Retreat which generally exemplified the free sex pre-AIDS party life of New York City. Oddly enough, it was housed in what was a defunct gay sex club. It had strict rules of no gay men, single men discouraged, couples only, no drugs(a rule to which nobody paid the least bit of attention) and no booze. However, it didn’t last long as New York mayor Koch shut down the sex orgy clubs when faced with the growth of the AIDS epidemic. Not to be wiped out of the sex business or a big sex industry name, a similar such place with similarly well known ownership interests, Plato’s Repeat, opened in Fort Lauderdale, again as a straight swingers(read sex) club. For a good in depth read on Plato’s Retreat, see the 1998 New Times article«Swingers Redux:» Now to Slammer, which history brings us from a gay sex club in New York, then to the closing of a straight swingers club on to a straight sex club in Lauderdale, all the way back around again to what is a gay sex here in Fort Lauderdale. Slammer, occupying the location of what was Plato’s Repeat, might be best termed as a «Gay(read sex) Amusement Park.» It’s not a bath house with rooms, but an arrangement of various cubby holes, some containing devices such as slings, benches, positioning chairs & etc. and an elevated walkway glory hole complex. It’s a membership club, of course, but somewhat different. When you check in you’ll be asked if you have any liquor. If so, they will take your bottle, mark it and deliver it to the bar where you can order drinks from it for your consumption leaving what remains in the bottle for future visits. As for the bar area, it’s really rather nice, a pleasant enough place for simple conversation or «hitting up» on an appealing patron. There is a large locker room changing area, generally guarded, but otherwise rather typical of a gym changing area, showers and toilets. The activities area is generally designed to be somewhat of a maze, easy to get twisted around in, and in fact I got somewhat lost but since I probably pushing the envelope of good tastes by even making a review of a place like Slammer, I’ll spare the details. If you’re a vanilla Bambi or sexually faint of heart Slammer is not the place for you. But if you like a place, somewhat akin to a straight whore house except gay and where all the whores work for free as sexual volunteers, you tend to be somewhat aggressive as well as unnerved by sexual adventures not commonly found on the everyday gay sex menu, you might enjoy slamming around at the Slammer. The pictures added were taken during off hours so that vehicles or property of patrons, particularly those, if any but more than likely of closeted Republicans and members of the conservative right wing clergy would not be revealed or inadvertently identified. As a word of caution, though the on site Slammer parking area appears to be relatively safe and secure, the neighborhood is not. So, venturing out of this area on foot, especially during hours of darkness, would not be advisable.
