Varsity Tavern

Typical sports bar. No class. Low quality drinks, possibly (doing a bad job of) pouring bottom shelf liquor and trying to pass it off as top shelf. Food is «actually» good but doesnt compensate for disgruntled 20 something waitresses or the highschool gym feel. (That’s what they’re going for?) You will be surrounded by 50 big screen TVs and LOUD Country music the entire time you’re there. I prefer my Dallas dive bars. I’m not sure if this represents Ft. Worth well or not, but definitely not for me.

I have a complaint! Ask me and I will tell you why! Only cool thing about the place was the bartender!

On the evening of January 16^th, a male friend and I waited in line in 30 degree weather to go to Varsity Tavern. We were told after standing in line for 20 minutes that we could not get in because apparently the security officers did not like the shoes he was wearing. I’d like to repeat the fact that it was 30 degrees outside and state that his boots were perfectly fine for every other establishment we attended that night (left dinner with friends at Joe T. Garcia’s and the bar directly across the street). If I could give this place 0 stars I certainly would.
Do not waste your time. This place is a disgrace to the city of Fort Worth which I believe has some of the nicest people in the DFW. I recommend spending your money elsewhere.

This bar is simply fantastic in the few weeks it has been open I have stopped in 5 times. The game day atmosphere is perfect for watching your favorite teams with multiple views. The bartenders are all well seasoned and handle the rush quite well. Not to mention this bar has fantastic food and not just bar food the meatloaf is so good it will make you wanna slap yo momma.

I’ve seen this place as it was under construction as I frequent Magnolia Motor Lounge across the street. I thought to myself, «Yay awesome! A new bar! Go Fort Worth!»
Tonight we had 4 friends having birthdays, 3 ladies and one guy. It’s about 25 people. Most of us in the group are couples and after some drinks and food at Chimys we wanted to try Varsity Tavern out.
We walk in the cold the four blocks down there and there’s a line. Peculiar as no bar in Fort Worth ever has a line but it’s new so whatever. We wait in the line for about 10 minutes and we are let in. So not an awful wait I guess. I’ve never really waited to get in a tavern before…
Wait, did I say WE we let in? Let me explain.
Only the females were being let in. My husband was told he was not welcome but I could go. My friends and their boyfriends? The same. The guys whose birthday it was? The same.
Here’s the deal. I can go places without my husband. That’s how healthy couples operate. But, on my 4 friends birthday I don’t plan to go into a bar and leave my husband outside the black bars that guard their patio area like a prison (or a playpen?) while I drink inside. That’s weird.
And what’s more weird is there were men inside… so I have to wonder how do they decide which males to let in? Whomever looks rich enough? Douche-​enough? Hairy enough? Ghetto enough? Cool enough? I don’t know because the range of men inside was a wide variety. Is it first come first serve? Like the first 100 dudes get in but everyone else too bad?
So definitely go if you’re an unattached female! You’ll have a wide variety of male species to choose from.
From now on, I’ll stay across the street at Magnolia where the music and atmosphere is better anyway.

If I could give 0 stars I would. This place wouldn’t let me in with $ 200 «sweatpants» and $ 300 Nikes, but they let in people with 4 teeth. A dress code is fine, but it’s pretty ridiculous that they wouldn’t let me in. Go to Landmark instead

I was excited while this place was under construction across the street from my apartment this winter, and went to check it out last night. The bouncer took one look at my boyfriend’s ID and said it was fake because it «didn’t light up.» He is 26 years old. I asked if we could have a bartender come give a 2^nd opinion and I think he felt pretty embarrassed because he changed his story and said no out of state I.D.‘s since he is not familiar with them.
So basically if you are from South Carolina, or any of the 49 states that aren’t TX, you can’t even get in the door!
He was rude and clearly very inexperienced at his job, which tells me enough about the kind of staff they are hiring to stay FAR away from this place. It is clearly a bunch of underage college kids trying to get into a bar in West 7^th.
