Microwave cooking at its finest = Don’t bother. You’ll notice the two stacked microwaves right next to the cash register. They were nuking everyone’s food, nothing was fresh. I don’t mind waiting in line, especially if the food is going to be good. We waited for about 10 minutes to order and then another 30 for the food. However, I witnessed this conversation over and over again: «have you ordered yet?» «Yes, I’m waiting for my food.» «Oh, what did you order?» I had clam chowder, it tastes like Progresso from a can. My husband had a lobster roll, which was lobster on a hot dog bun with a packet of mayo for him to apply. Give me a break. As we were leaving, I noticed that the guy who was working as the cashier was taking people’s money, then going to prepare food: no gloves, no hand washing. NEVERAGAIN.

My husband and I both had haddock sandwiches and shared onion rings. Everything was delicious and tasted fresh, fresh, fresh! Highly recommend!

Great food and the owner is awesome. Must stop in to see Tom(the chowder master) who has being making award winning chowder for 40 years. If you’re lucky, he’ll stop you on the street with a coupon. Loved it. Thanks guys!

I think if you go in the off-season when there are not many customers, the food is not as good. We had some of the fried selections, and they were ready way too fast to have been made fresh for us. The fish was tough and everything tasted like the fry oil was old. Maybe it’s better when it’s crowded. I wouldn’t know.

Visited yesterday, I have live here for 47 years and have never been here. they have won best clam chowder quite a few times. I would like to start by saying I have had clam chowder(moms) dozens of times, so I have a bias to the type of chowder I like. 1) I like whole clams(with or without bellies) this chowder has chopped. There is nothing wrong with chopped and I can imagine most people would not like whole clams. 2) I like a thinner consistency, this is thick. 3) I prefer larger and firmer potatoes. These are small and soft. Be aware this is very hard to do in a retail setting because the potato continues to cook as the day goes by. At home you can eat as soon as it is ready and refrigerate for later eating. 4) and I like(mom will kill me for saying this) corn(sorry mom) I like the texture it gives. But corn is for corn chowder. 5) i would say that it was under seasoned. So, I am not saying this chowder is good or bad u can make that decision on ur own. Oh, and the owner is very nice.

OK, so the good, they don’t mess around with the fillings here. I tried the corn chowder and the fish chowder and it was filled. The fish were giant chunks and delicious. The downside is the chowder is very thin and boiling hot. It took me 15 minutes of stirring it before it was cooled down enough to just barely burn my tongue. The owners are nice and given the area, its probably the best chowder you’ll get

Best chowder my husband and I have ever had. Everything is made fresh. Good space, good music, good conversation with the owner.

My family and I stopped in here looking for more of a small snack type of lunch. It was exactly what we needed. All the food we ordered tasted good. It wasn’t anything fancy but pretty much what was expected. It’s a tiny little place with a takeout window so don’t go in with too high of expectations. We ordered a couple chowders, some onion rings, and a grilled cheese sandwich. Basic food. And it was good.

Chowder tasted like oily water, even a lot of salt and pepper with oyster crackers could not help this sorry excuse for chowder. Don’t waste your money. Lobster roll OK– mayo comes on the side, not mixed into the sandwich. Staff was friendly.

Stopped in here because there was someone giving out fliers for a place to eat with a menu and coupon. Well, they caught me at perfect timing because I hadn’t thought about eating till I saw the menu… so it worked. I had the clam chowder and a fried clam roll. The food was pretty good. I only give it three stars due to the fact that their tarter sauce came in a packet and was pretty much like mayo. If they maybe put a little more effort towards simple things like good condiments, I’d definitely be willing to give them a better rating. But overall, a good experience.

So I decide to take a drive from Standish to Freeport for some shopping and for lunch. I stumbled upon a great place to eat. The Freeport Chowder House did not disappoint. The fish ‘n’ chips that ordered were VERY good. So good, that the next time I am in Freeport, I plan to eat there again. The only down side was that a bottled water cost $ 2. Next time I am going to bring a drink with me and order my food to go.

First place I ate at when arriving in Maine because I heard they had the best clam chowder. Let me break it to you now, they don’t. It was not bad, but not«The best». We had a fish sandwich with fries and it was just ok. The fries were terrible, and if you wonder what does terrible mean? I mean they were all broken up in pieces so you couldn’t even grab a few because they were all broken. Tasted like frozen fries out of a bag cooked in old grease, not good. All in all, I wouldn’t recommend it. We went for a quick bite but left feeling like it was just Eh. So many other good places to eat in Maine!

My first ever lobster roll experience. They were excellent. Nothing in Michigan where I’m from can compare. The owner was a pretty cool guy too.

Don’t bother with this place. It’s a total rip off. The«famous» lobster rolls consist of a piece of bland, tasteless lobster plopped into a small bun. Period. And for this we paid 16 bucks. The next day we were in Booth Bay and had an entire lobster dinner for $ 20.

This small restaurant looked kind of promising from the outside and allegedly had award winning chowders. Upon entering you could see the small and very uncomfortable tables that you need to slide into(potential problem if you are overweight). At that point I was still hopeful for some amazing food though. We ordered 3 types of chowder and a 2-mini sandwich plate that had one lobster and one crab roll. Along with 4 drinks, this came to nearly $ 60. I was really hoping these appetizer sized items would be great. I watched them heat the chowders in the microwave and make a small coffee in a single serve brewer. The seafood seemed fresh, but the chowders were awful! One seemed like seafood in water(very thin and no seasoning. The lobster one came in warm milk — again no seasoning or anything. The clam chowder was the best of the 3, but still not outstanding. The lobster roll and crab roll were bland and came with a mayo packet. Really? There was a lot of crab, but not too much lobster. The crab lit it was pulled from a can and put on bread. They also have fried foods which we didn’t get. For the prices they charge, I would expect decent food and/or atmosphere. They failed with both. Go somewhere else if you are looking to try some Maine seafood while you are in town.

The clam chowder is awesome! However, if you’re looking for some good lobster rolls or fried seafood, I would try somewhere else…

I was visiting town and walking towards another restaurant then decided to stop into the Chowder House. It was a one man show, done right. Had the fish and chips and my uncle had haddock sandwhich and we also got two clam chowders. Everything was cooked perfect. We didnt have so much seafood in the clam chowder so i spoke up and the guy was more than happy to fix it. He did. Great experience, i would definitely be back if i didnt live in west palm.

I don’t think this would ever come from me, but I was disappointed by the lobster and crab rolls from here. I kind of wished I tried the clam chowder, I have a feeling my review would be bumped up a star or two(if I’m generous). We picked up these two rolls to go before heading back on the road. The roll was very basic on a hot dog bun — not toasted or anything. The meat portions for fresh and simple. They gave us packets of mayo to dress ourselves. I guess I was looking for more and this wasn’t what I expected judging from the quaint exterior.

After trekking through Portland for a few days we decided to check out the outlets in Freeport before heading back to New York. After peeking in Linda Bean’s and deciding it was too expensive, we stumbled upon the Freeport Chowder House and decided the prices were more fitting. Seating here is a pain since it’s so small, but fortunately we were able to snag a table. We had a lobster roll and a bread bowl of chowder. The lobster roll was one of the best we had during our four day trip to Maine. It was full of tender claw meat and the mayo came on the side(we opted not to sully our roll with it). The bread bowl the chowder came in was great: crispy outside, soft inside. But the chowder left a lot to be desired. It was thin, lacking both potatoes and clam. I liked the flavor of it, but the consistency just wasn’t right. Plus it was heated in a microwave. This is a chowder house, that’s a big no no. I’d go again for the lobster roll because it was excellent, but get chowder elsewhere.

I think the three star rating is a bit low for this place. We came here for lunch with our two boys during our trip to Freeport. It is a tiny place with just six or so tables inside and some picnic benches outside. The menu has some Maine favorites like chowder(of course), fried fish and shellfish, and seafood rolls. My wife ordered the lobster stew; I had the mini lobster and mini crab roll combo; and one son got chicken strips. We ordered onion rings to share. The total bill was just about $ 40, which is not cheap but also not terrible. My lobster and crab rolls were good — very fresh tasting. The onion rings were pretty good too. The real star here was the lobster stew. My wife ordered it in a bread bowl. It was super buttery and rich. My son enjoyed his chicken. If you are looking for a light, quick lunch in Freeport, I think you could do worse than the Freeport Chowder House.
