I cannot lie about it: my motivation for going to this place was based solely in hoping I could find a Frank Underwood Rib Shack of my own in Gainesville. 2 Friends has takeout ribs only on Fridays and I just so happen to work within walking distance, so I took the plunge and gave it a chance. Despite all of the oddities of the location, hours, area, etc., I was surprised to discover a solid meal that I might see myself having again sometime. The Space: 2 Friends is a window built into a buildin, which also has a clothing store inside of it. There are no tables or chairs outside, and you would absolutely miss the fact that their is a food place here if you blinked while driving by. I cannot attest to the state of the interior or the kitchen, since these are not visible from where you place your order. Everything about the area and location suggests a humbleness, but I was not dissuaded for want of a potential diamond in the rough. The Service: Expectations were not high, and given what I anticipated about this experience I was pretty satisfied with the speed and demeanor of the nice man who served me. I did have to enter the building and poke around a bit before getting his attention, but after that it was prompt and amicable. The Food: As I mentioned before, I was looking for(perhaps) the best ribs that no one knew about in this place. I ordered the rib dinner which, despite being advertised as $ 9, was $ 10 this time around because he had baby backs on this particular Friday instead. I was not upset by this at all, and it was a flat $ 10 as well including two sides and a roll. The roll was a store-bought piece pulled from one of those square loaves, so I ignored it. Corn on the cob and baked beans were my selections for sides, mainly because they were the only ones available. The corn was cooked to my satisfaction and tasted like CotC should. The baked beans were actually above average for me, however. They were sweet but not too sweet, and the spice blend included a very appealing cinnamon flavor that did not grow old as I ate. The ribs were definitely solid, but not the magic I was hoping for. The sauce on them was leaning on the sweeter side, which may suit others more than it does me. Also the presence of a smokiness was not really there, indicating to me that these guys probably spent time in an oven more so than a grill(and certainly not a smoke pit). With that in mind, they were cooked really well, falling off the bone and tender without being mushy from spending too much time in a liquid-filled pan. Final Thoughts: It was more of an adventure than anything else, and I set my bar pretty low before giving it a shot. The cost was acceptable for what I got and it was really quick, but I know that is an indicator of the cooking methods used for what I was served. I cannot whole-heartedly encourage you go here, but I can tell you that you will have decent food to eat should you decide to be bold and wander up to the little window on the corner.
