In a food coma as I write this. I really liked this spot. If you’re near Gainesville, do yourself a solid and check this place out. MUCH better than any of the chain restaurants on Archer Road. Food was fresh and had that«home cooked» feel. I got the 2 fried pork chop dinner with greens and mac and cheese. Could have used a little more seasoning in my opinion, as the sides were kind of bland. 2 large chops with an appropriate amount of crispy breading, and two scoops of sides. It came with cornbread and a drink for exactly $ 10. For me, there was enough for leftovers. A couple of regulars I met at the pick-up window assured we would not be disappointed, and they were right. Staff was friendly, and the place was easy to find. This place is take-away-only. There is an order/pick-up window and no access to inside. Parking might be an issue if this place gets busy, but you’re in and out so quickly, it shouldn’t be that bad. Would definitely eat here again. ;-D

I’ve had Soul Shack’s food several times now and felt it only fair to update my review. The star rating will remain at four, because I think that’s fair: I don’t find them to be fully exceptional, but I do find them to cook some very good soul food. Also, their staff is exceedingly polite and helpful and seem eager to please their customers. In example, I was talking with one of their managers one day and mentioned that as well as their lemon cake, perhaps they should consider adding a traditional chocolate cake with chocolate icing or a red velvet cake, and next time I came in less than a week later, lo and behold they actually had a chocolate cake! And it was very good, too! The fried chicken has also improved markedly since my first visit and ranks with some of my very favorite fried chicken in the region. I think what shines most of all however is their sides: the greens, the whiteacre peas, and the candied yams all are very good and those whiteacre peas are about perfect. If you’ve never had this Southern staple, you ought to try it here. Soul Shack has started doing a fish fry on Fridays and Saturdays and offers fried catfish, whiting, or tilapia plus fried blue crabs or garlic crabs. Having lived in a mostly African-American part of Savannah, Georgia a number of years, I can attest that the approach taken here to the weekend fish fry is very true to how soul seafood is done in general – right down to having whiting on offer which is a fish you don’t see that often outside of African-American communities. Garlic blue crabs are also a time-honored soul food tradition and I’m really glad to see them doing that here, too. I had the fried catfish and found it to be fried in basically the same batter as they use for the fried chicken, which while ideal for fried chicken is a little heavy for catfish, but ok. Their hushpuppies are also not my favorite – too bready somehow, like a fried piece of cornbread nearly. That said, this is a good restaurant which is obviously doing things to become even better and I really admire that. And without hesitation I can recommend the fried chicken wings, the vegetable sides I mentioned, and their chocolate cake.

I wanted some good southern food since I’m in town for less than 48 hours, and the Denver southern food scene can’t compare to getting it directly from the South. Had the oxtail — wow, that was tasty! The yellow rice was great, as were the greens. The Mac n cheese could have been a little more moist, but overall it was great.

Little hole in the wall shack with great food! Chicken tenders, ribs and yummy candied yams.
