Ordered the 2 piece catfish filet with 6 medium shrimp, a side of greens and roll. Didn’t mind the 15 minute wait. About $ 9 and change. It was good, but not sure if it’s $ 9+ good…

Very nice fish spot in the cut, if you so happen to be in the neighbourhood and craving fish, drop by. The 2 guys that helped me out were awesome I ordered swai & shrimp lunch combo with fries, you can get it fried or grilled in my case I got both and im glad they accommodated that.

my opinion: i had cornmeal as meal. cornmeal with a little bit of fish. i will never ever ever eat here again. a good legacy gone down hill. after i got to my moms house and opened my take out order, i tried to eat the fried cornmeal that had a small portion of fish and found it utterly unpalatable. i then called them to complain and asked to speak to the owner, who i know is there. the guy says the owner is not there but i can speak with the«manager.» the«manager» then says that he can relay anything i say to the«owner.» after he hears the nature of my complaint… then he says he really is the owner. what the hell? That type of behavior does not instill trust in me. I don’t care if there was a free fish offer from them — I no longer trust this place. That was the nail in the coffin. This was a mom/pop neighborhood place. now the son/owner has gone all beverly hills… dodging customers? really? Well mr. owner/manager, I found a high tech way to express my disappointment with your«food.»

I drive from Lakewood for this fish. It’s always fresh, hot and delicious! The staff is friendly and the place is clean. I have been eating here for several years. So many of my friends now eat there because I have referred them and they agree the food is great!

I have been eating at Bates for years. Love how they season the fish and fried shrimp. But today I had the grilled salmon and I have to be honest and say its just ok. It could of been cooked better and some fat could if been trimmed. The macaroni salad taste like smart & final. I will stick to the fried foods only…

I’ve been here a number of times, however, today I chose the shrimp lunch. Unfortunately, I was not as pleased as I have been in the past. Fish is always good but they appear to be sometimey on the shrimp!

I have eaten here on several occasions. And I have yet to be disappointed — the filet of sole is so good. It is one of the signature fish they cook. They also have great side dishes — this is a must eat.

Tried this hole in the wall joint a few years ago with my hubby. Discovered this place when driving from my uncle’s house. We thought we’d try it out. Loved the friendly customer service. Food is fried to perfection. A lil salty with the seasoning but I love it! Been going back and forth esp since I’m pregnant and craving for some fried shrimp and fried oysters. Regardless of how the business looks on the outside but dont judge it by that. Good food for the soul! Give it a try when you’re around the neck of the woods.

Their fish is good… just a little salty! The staff is funny… Pretty women get hit on, its simple. Prices are decent. This place is worth a try… although I like Johnnys Fish Market better.

Should I keep it TOTALLY real about this place? Would I be an awful member of Unilocal if I didn’t give you the GOOD and the BAD? Probably so., so eff it. I’ll go ahead and give it to you straight with no chaser. A few years ago, I headed over to Bates to place an order only to discover that they were shutdown by the Health department for having a fly infestation. Ahhhh nawllllllllllll, homie! I was in utter disbelief. This had been the spot for years, and now they were closed due to not having a control over their flies. Ugh. Hella gross, right? Yeah, I know. But they are now open again and I’m assuming it’s because they finally cleaned up their act. I have eaten here since then and the quality of the fried seafood is still up to par. If you aren’t afraid to roll through considering their shady history, try their fried Louisiana oysters and shrimp with fries. The other sides that are offered don’t taste fresh. Stay away from them unless you like Smart and Final macaroni salad. Happy eating(or not!) lol
