The main cashier/owner of this branch is extremely knowledgeable about Indie comics and stays current on all releases. He’s recommended numerous series that have turned out to be brilliant and his conversations are insightful, referencing young and old content. In general the store is your basic comic store and I feel that the Marvel/DC could be smaller to make room for Image and Vertigo. Overall, I highly recommend this branch because its staff can help you find the perfect story.

I used to shop at Keith’s Mockingbird location, and when I moved to Richardson, I was afraid I was going to have to either make less frequent trips to get my comics or change stores. I was very glad that he opened a location in Firewheel about 2 months after my move. While this location is a little bit more toy-focused than the Mockingbird location, they keep a selection of older comics as well as the last few months of recent comics. I was able to transfer my pull list from the Mockingbird store and I can add and remove from it easily. Occasionally, Leia will suggest something for me based on my favorite books or writers. It’s great when your store knows you. If I can’t find something, I can always ask about it and get it in my pulls for the next week. There are always fun events happening, so make sure to sign up for their email list or follow Keith on Facebook or Twitter.

It’s good to see a comic book store in Firewheel, I was excited to check this place out. I know the rest of the establishments in the area and like the idea of them having good competition. I was a bit nonplussed to find this Keith’s location crowded with more toys than comic books, but I understand that. Pros: The service was friendly and fun, they seem to have at least a good chunk of the current major lines and titles, their prices for comic books are standard, and it’s a generally happy and cool place like any comic book store should be. Cons: The staff wasn’t as knowledgeable about current or past comic events and story arcs as I’d have expected(perhaps this is an unrealistic expectation?), their new comics are loose and in less-than-stellar shape from having been manhandled, I have no idea where their back issues are or if they even have them, and they charge for bags and boards. I’m very serious about that last point: no comic book store should charge for bags and boards, and in a high foot-traffic locale their new titles should be bagged and boarded the instant they emerge from the shipping box to protect them. I won’t be a stickler about the lack of back issues for the general reason I understand the glut of toys: frankly this is Firewheel and they obviously made the very savvy business decision to devote precious real estate to stock that is likely to turn over faster.
