The young man & I went on a mini-tour of Geneva’s galleries the other day, and Gallery 28 was our favorite. Why? — The more laid-back feel. Cross between a «gallery»(with that stiff connotation) and a shop — a variety of media represented: cool paintings by numerous artists, jewelry(I bought an unusual kinetic silver necklace for $ 20), and«functional art,» which ranged from ceramic ware to metal work for the home(candle holders, coasters, etc.) to pepper mills to custom wood furniture. — The staff. The lady running the place(one of the owners, I believe) was cool, let us roam, was friendly but didn’t dominate(it’s sometimes frustrating when you try to look at things in a gallery and the clerk is too chatty unbidden; you can’t focus on the art). In addition to the gallery aspect, they apparently have events and concerts on occasion; the lady running the place was breaking down the setup from a performance the night before while we were there(and kindly warned us when she had to slam some table legs to fold it up). Might be interesting to check one of these events out. The setting is intimate(this space is an old Victorian house, complete with slanted, creaking floors and fascinating light play through the big windows) and the sound quality in such a space would be unique. Overall, it’s definitely worth jumping slightly off the beaten path for(they’re just a step north of State Street). If you’re in Geneva, Gallery 28 is something to see.
