Upon entering the Moy Tung Ving Tsun school, one is greeted by a spartan environment, devoid of ornamentation, but a couple of punchbags, the Jong training dummy, and a shrine to the lineage of VT. Anything else is unnecessary and would detract from the school’s central mission: to make authentic VT, as taught using the methods handed down by the late Grandmaster Moy Yat, as accessible as possible. In pursuit of this purpose the school mirrors the simple, effective nature of VT itself. In these times where the spectacle, hyperbole, and hubris of UFC/MMA dominates the public zeitgeist, it seems just about every«martial arts instructor» is cashing in on this popularity and opening up shop. Regrettably, with a few exceptions, many of these«self proclaimed masters» have more financial ambition than integrity, and certainly more mouth than talent or skill. When discerning whether one is gaining effective instruction in practical martial arts, authentic lineage therefore carries more significance than ever. It is the mark of authenticity of the kung fu practised within these walls, as passed down through the generations from Sifu to student. The Georgetown VT lineage: … Yip Man — … * Moy Yat — … (Moy Tung Clan) * Grandmaster Anthony«Moy Tung» Dandridge — … * Sigong Aaron«Moy 10 Tung» Vyvial — … * Sifu Nic Bartell(Georgetown) Sifu Bartell began studying Tae Kwon Do at age ten. After moving to Houston in his teens, Sifu Bartell explored other martial arts, including JKD, Muay Thai, and Jujitsu. Left with a sense of incompleteness and knowing the roots of JKD were deeply tied to Ving Tsun, Sifu Bartell investigated the relationship between the two styles in hopes of obtaining a more comprehensive understanding of what he had learned training JKD. In early 2002, while attending University of Texas at Austin, Sifu Bartell was opened up to the VT system by Sifu Aaron«Moy 10 Tung» Vyvial. Very quickly Sifu Bartell recognized the potency of VT and the inadequacies of his previous training. He therefore, dedicated all his martial art training to VT, becoming one of Sifu Vyvial’s earliest indoor students. Studying in a constant, focused manner as a special student under Sifu Vyvial and a grand special student under Sigong Moy Tung, Sifu Bartell became the first certified Sifu in the Moy 10 Tung clan. From my experience, Sifu Bartell is a man of the rarest integrity, whom truly practises what he preaches whilst living the«kung fu life». His dedication to all aspects of life matches the pure intensity of his pursuit for the mastery of VT. This encompasses his work, family, and dedication to his students. Sifu Bartell is also a humble man. Whilst his kung fu is truly formidable, he does not proclaim to be the source of all knowledge, but freely provides access to other sources. He therefore actively encourages students to travel and«touch hands» with other students. The school operates a two year programme, during which, it provides unlimited lessons 3-times a week, for up to two hours each lesson(equating to around approx 600 hours of instruction). This provides a fantastic foundation in kung fu, and more than enough for most individuals to effectively defend themselves in most situations they could reasonably find themselves in. Students learn VT in the traditional way, touching hands with older students(Sihings), with Sifu providing guidance/correction as needed. We operate a controlled environment practising the Sihing/Sidai relationship to ensure the safety of students. i.e. students practise particular exercises until proficient/conditioned mitigating the risk of injury, before advancing to the next exercise. As VT is based upon physics and body mechanics, beginners are taught to not use strength, but to continually strive in their endeavour to perfect technique. This improves effective application of force, magnifying the potency of one’s strike, which is in stark contrast to other«sparring based training» which may attempt to make up for lack of understanding with over-enthusiasm. In this sense, VT is particularly well suited to women and individuals of smaller stature. Beyond the Two Years, students are provided the opportunity to develop a deeper mastery of VT, the study of which can last a lifetime… I am genuinely amazed at what I have learned in my three years training, and intend to pursue VT as a lifelong endeavour. Please note, to ensure the safety of both students and the public, the school does not allow«walk-ins» off the street, without first undertaking an introduction class(so please have the good courtesy to call Sifu Bartell in advance if you intend to stop by).

The discipline, commitment and compassion that Sifu Nic Bartell and Simo BeeBee Hu bring to the their teaching of Kung Fu is inspiring. Both of them will help you learn how to learn: when to reflect, when to ask questions, when to try things out with your hands, when to push on, when to take a break, etc, and all of this will happen while you are learning the Kung Fu. If you are looking for the real deal, you’ve found it here!
