They have closed down! They have been closed for at least one year now. They did have good bbq when they were open. Green Top Sporting Goods moved and took their business with them.

What happened? Why are the doors locked and the smoker gone. Are you guys moving or just closed? It sucks.

Pretty good BBQ and tasty sauce. So hard to find excellent NC style BBQ, even in NC, so get the good stuff when you can. People were nice too, and they have some spots you can eat outside and watch cars go by and people visit the gun shop next door :). This is the type of place I’d open myself if I had any talent.

Okay I’m partial to NCBBQ and with so many options outside my back door that are amazing… My standards are high. The place was good. In fact, the va style red saucy BBQ was pretty darn good. What was okay and didn’t measure up as much were the ribs. Not much meat and way too tough. The green beans had lots of flavor from the fatty bacon they were boiled in. French fries. were like the frozen crunchy ones in your freezer aisle. If I’m in the area again, I’ll go back bc service was nice and I like hole in the walls. Plus, I saw more potential and they could probably get a higher rating.

WOW! talk about your hidden GEM. I have been calling on a specific customer about 5 miles down the road quarterly for the last 3.5 years, and always see their location, but always passed because it always looked run down and small. Well today i sucked it up and stopped in and grabbed lunch. HOLYCRAP, have I been missing out on this place. 2 nice smoker grills outside filling the air with the perfect BBQ aroma, inside nicely maintained and for the women, a bathroom that is updated, modern and decorated. The pulled pork and vinegar sauce that is on is is absolutely TDF(to die for), so much so that I had to go back for seconds. And ACTUALLY3rd as I came back for dinner when my dinner BBQ spot was terrible, check out my reviews and it will narrow it down for you. Going forward I will always stop by this place to grab a sandwich… or 2!

Serviceable & friendly. Besides, how can you NOT love a BBQ joint in the parking lot of a gun store?!

We come down from DC to go to Kings Dominion pretty frequently. We’ve been searching for a good place for a dinner break to get good food and a beer. We finally found it. Phat Boyz BBQ is in a small building located next to a gun shop. The smoker out back smells so good. There are only a few seats inside and a small patio outside. The pork BBQ is fantastic and the country rib was great. The portions are large. The cole slaw, hush puppies and corn bread are really good. The mac n cheese and green beans are good but not great but it’s really nice to have a couple green side options at a BBQ place. All in all this is one of the best BBQ places we’ve been to.

Pick up dinner here yesterday. Ordered the Family Pack — 1lb Pork BBQ, 2 large sides, slaw and 4 buns for $ 21. Pretty good deal. Really enjoyed the BBQ. The sauces were also delicious. Sides were good too(had mac’n cheese and green beans). I want to give it 4.5 stars but Unilocal won’t let me ! Would recommend this place for BBQ fans. Staff was very friendly.

I really like this place. I can’t remember what I got except to say it was Pulled Pork; that’s the first thing I always try at a new BBQ place, and I remember I REALLY enjoyed my meal. Like a lot of places in RVA, it closes really early some nights, so probably best for lunch.

This is a pretty solid barbecue joint. Small enough to be mistaken for a stand, as another Unilocaler noted, Phat Boyz is easy to miss. Not a lot of room to sit down, but it’s made to be a take-out place. However, many signs advertise some great happy hour specials — too bad it is just way too far out of the way to hang around there long enough for a beer. So far, I’ve stopped in twice to get a pulled chicken sandwich and then a pulled pork sandwich and hush puppies. Chicken was a little dry, but was balanced well with their cole slaw. Pork was very satisfying, and was just moist enough that it didn’t need any sauce. Hush puppies are like little balls of homemade happiness, nommed well with their sweet barbecue sauce. The place is so small and rarely occupied, that the staff always looks a little surprised when someone walks in. Don’t be afraid. Just order, grab your reasonably-priced piece of meat, fill up a couple of cups of sauce [located near the register — I had to figure this out on my own], and be on your merry way.

I went to Phat Boyz on a Sunday quest for barbecue. The joint is just what a barbecue place should be: rustic, casual and tiny with a big patio. We sat at the counter and I ordered the combo number 7, Pork BBQ with one country-style rib, cornbread and 2 sides for $ 12.50. Not a bad price for a combo meal! The barbecue was good, but not spectacular. The meat itself could have used some more cooked-in flavor. That said, the sauce was fantastic. It was Virginia-style with a great balance of tomato, tang and a hit of sweetness. I poured it all over everything. My rib was smokey and tender, but again, not the best I’ve had in town. For sides I got potato salad and baked beans, both were good, but again not standout. The corn bread came right out of a cast-iron skillet and was pretty tasty if you like the savory type. A cold Bud Lite on tap washed the meal down. Overall, I didn’t find any faults with Phat Boyz, there just wasn’t anything that pushed me into barbecue bliss either. It seemed more like fast-food style BBQ than sit-down, and most of the people coming in were grabbing sandwiches to go. I’d probably stop in and do the same if I were hungry and in the area.
