This place is great, the food is fantastic, the people are friendly and helpful. Based on those items it is five stars. I will definitely be coming back again(many more times). The only reason for four out of five stars is MYFAULT. I was expecting a restaurant where we can sit down and be served with real silverware and napkins etc… This is not the case. It is more like a fast food restaurant. This was my fault and not theirs. I did not know what kind of restaurant it is. You order at a counter and then either pick up your food or they bring it to you(almost like a fast food place or pizza shop). The plates are Styrofoam and the silverware plastic. . Now to the good. Now that I understand the type of restaurant it is I WILL be coming back over and over again. I kept hearing about Dosas and had no idea what it was so I had to try it and this place got good reviews. There were so many kinds. The people that worked their took the time to explain what each one was(different«shells» and different stuffing) and then asked us what we liked. They then recommended two different ones. The first one was great and the second one was better. The staff was even helpful after we got our food. They told us about the different sauces and the other items that were served with the food. They warned us as to what was spicy and what was sweet and even how to eat them(what to dip what into). If you are like me and did not understand what a Dosa is let me explain in a non-technical way. I apologize if this is technically incorrect. A Dosa is an Indian Quesadilla. There is a round shell that is loaded with stuffing(this place was vegetarian) and then folded in half so it looks like half a circle. In this restaurant you have your choice of shells(I think there were thee types) and MANY stuffings, It is then served with some sauces to be eaten with it. Do not forget to try the Ginger Beer — It is non alcoholic(like a combination of Ginger Ale and Root Beer). It is extremely tasty and even though it is not diet you can see on the can that it is relatively low in calories I cannot wait to go back and work my way through the whole menu..

No frills authentic South Indian dishes. They have fusion dosas & kid friendly options. My favorite is the Paneer dosa & Pondicherry Masala(I should caution the latter dish is quite spicy!). Enjoy & give it a go.

OMG, we stopped here via Unilocal and we were pleasantly surprised. First we weren’t sure as to how the sambar(lentil soup) to go with Dosa, would be and it was late around 9:30pm Sunday evening. We got a sample and it was fresh and tasty and just perfect. We also got Pody Idli and it was a fried veer’s in of white Idli, it was simply amazing. Masala Dosa was excellent and the condiments to go along were fresh and fantastic. Definitely left happy and kudos to the Owner/Manager for making the experience which would result in repeat visit & business. Thank you!!!

I had a great first experience. We went with the family and we liked everything we had. Starting from the first bite of the dosa. Highly recommended.

Pretty decent dosa. I’ll visit again. This is a good take out spot. You order at the counter and pay then receive your meal. It looks clean in the inside. Don’t expect an upscale seating area. The food is served in styrofoam plates, cups and plastics spoons/knife/fork. It’s cheap and perfect to order to go.

Crispy Rava masala dosa, samosas were amazing, and pani puri are to die for. Service was great, owner was very attentive and food came fresh and fast. My new go to dosa spot. Definitely worth the trek all the way from queens.

Amazing food and very nice staff. The food is every bit as good as the Bowne Street location and the tea is even better! I live in the area so it’s awesome to have great dosa without having to drive to Flushing! I recommend masala dosa if you’re new to South Indian food and cheese/spinach and onion masala dosa are my personal favorites here.

The food here is amazing ! Try it out you won’t be disappointed even better when you sit here and enjoy it fresh. The owner is amazing as well he goes above and beyond to make sure your experience is great. Must try are the coffee, masala dosa and onion chili cheese dosa ! The young man that make the coffee makes it to perfection. Overall it’s a great place and worth it. Also you get great food for a reasonable price !!

I’ve been a long time fan of the dosage Hutt in flushing so was very happy when this location opened. The dosa, potatoes and sambar taste almost exactly the same. There are other places in the area to get dosas, but this one is the best. Always fresh and tasty. For those who complain about take out, dosas should always be eaten on the spot. If you take them to go they will get soggy, doesn’t matter where you buy them from. When you wrap a hot dosa up, the steam will soften it, and they will get soggy, unavoidable. Same thing when ordering french fries to go, the steam will make them soggy. If you eat them there they are perfectly crispy. And yes the food is spicy, this is not americanized Indian food. If you can not handle spicy foods then don’t eat at real Indian restaurants. I had to include this as that negative review below me lacks common sense.

Just had lunch at this casual neighborhood place, and loved it. Food is very tasty and freshly made. Don’t let the menu intimidated you; ask the owner: he is right behind the counter and helpful with explanations. Try the spinach and cheese masala dosa. Yummy. I’ll be back.

My wife has celiac disease, so we are always looking for something tasty and gluten free. Yesterday, she was in the mood for Indian foods and she looked up places that made dosa, which is lentil-based and gluten free. She called Hillside Dosa Hutt and was told that most of their menu was gluten free. She hung up and we planned our order. We called back and placed an order for five of us. The woman taking the order appeared to have difficulty understanding us, but we didn’t know how bad the problem was. As part of the order, we said that our son wanted a rice dish that wasn’t spicy(12-year old Aspies can be fussy) and she suggested vegetable biryani. We also asked that the dosa be crispy if possible. We topped the order off with five mango lhass drinksi. We sent a friend and our son to pick up the order, a fifteen minute drive each way. When they returned home, the first thing we noticed was that the bag with the lhassi was leaking. They had stacked the drinks, two in a bag, one on top of the other and the bottom ones opened. Then we noticed that we didn’t have three of the dishes that we ordered, including the vegetable biryani. We called, and a male answered the phone. He first tried to blame my son for the lhassi spilling, and my wife who had ordered for not being clear about what she wanted. After a few minutes, in which we pointed out that the person taking the Jersey had suggested the rice dish, so it was clear what we wanted, he finally apologized and told us that he would give us a refund next time we came in. We asked if he could make good on the rest of the order, and I went to pick it up. When we got there, he continued to insist that the error was our fault. But he replaced the two drinks that had gotten spilled and then proceeded to ring up the dishes that we had«added» to the order. No refund was offered, despite what he had said on the phone. I took out my card and told him that I would pay for the food, since we had ordered it, but given how he had messed up the order the first time, I should not have to. He got angry, but said that it was free. But he didn’t offer me the refund of the order they he had promised The dosa was soggy, and the biryani was too spicy for my son to eat, even though the whole point was a non spicy dish. The lhassi was good, however. Overall, an extremely disappointing evening. Poor food and even worse service. I do not recommend this place at all.

It was ok. Loved the idly/vada combo. It was so fresh and the sambar was perfectly flavored. The paper dosa was awesome too. My friend had the spinach paneer dosa and it tasted really strange. The man at the counter was very nice and friendly.

Like all good street foods, it’s easy to make a Dosa tasty, but rare to make it perfect. Most of the time, it’s either a throat-scratcher, a bit crackly and overdone… or a wet sponge, losing its shape too quickly to be easily eaten with your fingers. The dosas here are as close to perfect as you can get: soft enough to bend, but with just the slightest bit of crunch at the end. Don’t be fooled by the unassuming exterior, this place is the real deal. Easily the best five dollar meal I’ve had in a long, long time.

First time eating dosa(similar to a large crêpe) and I liked it. Asked the owner for whats popular, he suggested the butter masala dosa(not spicy) with potatoes inside. Chutney and a curried vegetable type soup come on the side. We also got a mix of fresh vegetable/fruit juices. Spouse and I enjoyed them both, we’ll be back to try more. Owner was nice, place was simple/not fancy.

I’m so glad that hillside has embraced its South Asian ethnic identity and what can complete that profile other than an authentic dosa restaurant. The dosa is made in front of you so you can keep your eyes on hygiene practices which is a plus. I ordered the butter masala dosa, the regular masala dosa and the tamarind rice. The rice was amazing! The dosa was good although I’d suggest that the chef considers reinventing the potato mashed filling. It lacked some key South Indian ingredients like curry leaves, mustard seeds, chilli powder, turmeric powder and it shouldn’t be so watery. The potato fillings are generally a little bit dry. However, the sambar was awesome! The green chutney was fine. I’m giving this restaurant four stars considering the fact that I devoured my food within seconds and for a inchoate restaurant, it is doing well. The owner claimed that they might consider delivery option in the future so keep a look out for that.

Glad there’s finally another option for dosa. This isn’t as good as Dosa Hut in flushing but the service is friendlier and much faster. Got a masala dosa which was pretty good. Cheap on the filling, found myself only having a few bites of potato and the rest was plain, which was lame. Also got the chocolate dosa which seemed to have a drizzle filling of Nutella. If you’ve had French desert crepes where it’s packed with chocolate this is the opposite. Just a drizzle which sucks for $ 5 but eh you can’t get chocolate anything at Usha so I guess that’s a positive. Id come back only Bc they are nice and not as busy as the other two places on the same block Bc u know parking in the area sucks.
