A fisherman had a dream — he went to Lands End but didn’t find any fishing gear. He went to Cabella’s and was overwhelmed at all the stuff. Then he went to a store in Bay Shore and found a dedicated sportsman’s store that specializes in high-end angling gear. That would be Orvis. No, it wasn’t my dream. I used to be an enthusiastic fisherman, but that was many years ago and I haven’t wet a line in over, well, a long time. Orvis specializes in high quality angling gear but also offers a line of clothing, dog gear, home furnishings and all for those with discriminating taste. Anyway, I’m not into fishing anymore. I used to be quite an enthusiastic angler, so I do understand the addiction and attraction to the sport. I am terribly impressed with Orvis. I wasn’t there for fishing, I’m a photographer, and I’ve been in search of a safari shirt or some other method of carrying camera gear without having to carry a gadget bag. I found my solution at Orvis, an angler’s vest that is a lightweight version of Captain Kangaroo’s coat — lots and lots of pockets, places to carry spare batteries, memory cards, additional lenses, even a couple of pockets large enough to carry additional cameras. There’s even one pocket large enough to carry lunch. You might call it an in-vest-ment. I was assisted by a young man who was helpful without being pushy, he even went into the back room to bring out a safari shirt that was off sale for the season. It was an amazing shirt — insect repelling — but not what I was looking for. If I were a true outdoorsman, an insect-repelling shirt would be of great interest. But I’m not. Just the same, Kudos for his extra effort to make sure I found what I wanted and left the store happy with my purchase. Before I left the store, I looked around a bit. Orvis is high end, offering beautiful clothing made from exquisite fabrics. I admit it, I’m not in the Orvis target demographic, but that doesn’t mean I don’t appreciate what they offer. It’s a wonderful store with terrific products. (By the way, I don’t care what they call the place these days, it has always been and always will be Bay Shore to me!)
