Damn good! I’ve rarely felt like such a gringo in a restaurant, but it’s a favorable comment on the food that we were literally the only non-Asian customers for over an hour on a Saturday night. I was mildly self-conscious but that is a small price to pay for such tasty fare. The rolls were handsome and all tasted very fresh. In one case I would say that the sauce was too liberally applied, so next time I’ll eschew sauced rolls. The other two(both sauceless) rolls were exquisite. It’s a small place, with a handful of four-tops and a long communal table down the middle. You could call it bare bones but that’s not a criticism at all; come for the fish, obviously. Service was satisfactory. I appreciate that I can get great sushi close to home, indeed right on my weekday commute route. Dining in was fine, but this could become a takeout favorite.

Girlfriend and I come here often for a later dinner after work. This place is great, food is made fresh and the staff is very friendly, they see us as regulars now. Great place to get some awesome Sushi.

First time I went to Shiroi the staff refused to seat us anywhere away from the door although it was freezing cold. The restaurant was empty but the staff insisted a large party was scheduled to show up shortly. I ordered food regardless and the rolls were good although the party never showed after 1.5 hours. I came back a second time after more than 3 months to give the restaurant a second go round… and asked to order food to go. The server told me it would be 40 plus minutes due to the 4 tables that were seated at the time out of 20 plus open ones. The server indicated they probably wouldn’t be able to serve me. Although I am not normally one to pull the race card. I can’t help but wonder if it has something to do with the service I have received. Most patrons are Asian. I am terribly disappointed in the customer service of this restaurant. The food wasn’t enough to make up for the lack of service.

Great service. Place was busy and there was only one waiter but he was very professional and very nice. I ordered a soji thinking it was beer and the waiter exchanged it to saporro after opening it with no problem. Was was great and affordable! Will come back !

Very good mom and pop place. Sushi is always fresh and customer service is superb. It’s not the most beautiful place on the inside but I come here for great sushi and the owners make me feel welcome. I live in Glenview area and in my opinion this is the best place around!

Went here with my siblings and my mother visiting from out of state. Sashimi dinner was enormous, and fed four fish lovin’ Asians more than adequately. The various appetizers that came beforehand and throughout were positively amazing. The octopus on a stick with the marinade was a super delight. I would definitely order more of that next time. It was nice to find a solid sushi/sashimi joint out of the bustling city. Seating was plentiful, and we were all definitely loud. Their liquor selection is limited to less than a handful of Korean soju brands, and they had some Sapporo available, which I swear tasted like honey. It was really good. Definitely complemented all the fish we had very well. Run by a nice Korean family; my mother ended up chatting with the lady of the restaurant for quite a bit. If you get hammered after the many bottles of soju and Sapporo, definitely walk by the Dunkin Donuts which is just a shop or two away in the same strip/complex and pick up some coffee to perk yourself back up. Definitely look forward to coming back again.

Every time going there was an explosion of gold and love in my mouth, never paling. I went from the simpler things, such as the crabstick over rice and calling it bona fide sushi, chicken teriyaki, but I never quite left them, either. I don’t much care for the supremely complicated dishes. Sushi to me is like insalata caprese: only the direct sum of its parts. I tired of my local Kamehachi; as I got older, something felt plain, especially as I frequented other restaurants. Everyone had their own little angle on this or that, but for the most part, so much tasted the same. Come around fifth grade, my mother and I decided to stop into Shiroi, a quaint little place right across from Golf Mill in a dingy little strip mall, owned by a kind and gracious Korean family. At the time, I finally felt I was ready to handle the spice of a spicy tuna roll, among other things. On the plate in front of me – and it hasn’t changed since, not in appearance, at least – were several rolls with what seemed like orange-red slop packed into little sushi rolls, tiny specks of something so complicated popping out of the sauce in it. Confused, I popped one in my mouth, and I was pleasantly surprised. Smooth, fresh, spicy, and yet it seemed that they put their own Korean twist on the flavor, and I’m not a foodie, so it’s difficult to describe, but it’s like the oil was something they made themselves, and no one can ever seem to emulate this recipe. It seems to me that the Japanese like their food simple, and I have no idea what they did to such a simple staple of American sushi, but even now, ten years later, I routinely stuff my gob with this stuff on at least a weekly basis. It’s a bit pricy, but it is sushi, after all. The spicy tuna roll never ceases to impress me, but neither does the other stuff. The bulgogi, cooked and served to savory perfection, miso soup with just the right amount of salt and flavor in it, austere and not like plastic, and no matter what I order, I always seem to be given tiny dishes of this or that, whether it be edamame, kimchi, or a potato croquette which tastes more like a gourmet treat and treasure than any old hashbrown. My mother likes the sashimi and seaweed cocktails, especially when she is fading into caring about her figure more than she usually does. I’m always greeted with smiles and handshakes there, dining in or taking out, though it doesn’t matter, since the service is always quick and professional. The charcoal and white color scheme is nice and clean on the inside, yet it manages to stay intimate and loud at the same time, and it’s not as though it’s a sterile place – there’s always a little dirt at the front door from their transient goers. Their menu is massive, and while I haven’t tired everything on it, I know that no matter what I order, they’ll make it well, and they always cater to my requests, no matter how specific or annoying they are. I always order my spicy tunas without cucumber, and I’ve never had a problem. Lame example, but it’s relevant. They care about their customers. At lunch or at dinner, when I rush in just before closing, the Wangs turn away from themselves and at me, like I’m their long lost best friend. Of course, I’m not special. This place has many regular, and they do the same thing with so many customers, but not once did it ever feel forced or phony or artificial. They care about their craft and their customers, and while this place may not have the largest budget for the world’s best whatever-you-want-to-call it like Jiro’s place, but every corner of this place, the owners, the food, the ambience, all of it, has the largest heart. That’s for damn sure.

What’s with the lady who never washes her hands in between serving customers and touching money? She doesn’t even wear gloves. The quality of sushi is excellent. But the entire restaurant needs a serious cleaning. Young guy behind counter is very cocky, talks on his phone while working which to me is very unprofessional. Watch out, this place seems to charge you even for extra chop sticks. If you beg you’ll get some water. Its a shame because their quality of fish is so great.

Our go to place for quick sushi when you have the craving n the stuff at the grocery store just won’t cut it! Nothing fancy. Just a quaint little mom n pop place close to home. Good sushi rolls n noodle dishes. Have tried their sashimi too n it’s good. Kids love the appetizers here.

This place just keeps getting better. Everyone likes eating where everyone knows your name. Food for the body, and ego. A warm welcome can change the entire tone of your day. I’m averaging once a month here. Its not close to home, but on nights I’m headed back in for company meetings, you’ll find me escaping to this sushi island in the sun. Shiroi is run by a family. They take tremendous pride in their product, presentation and you can see it in every aspect of your visit. They have these giant fish tanks. Why? Cause FRESHSUSHI, why. I’ve never been dissatisfied with a single meal here. While I clearly love my sashimi, I’ve had every roll at least once, and tried a few less traditional dishes along the way. All of it is cut clean(I’m oddly sensitive to this) and plated well. In addition, they offer specialty sushi too; Toro, Uni… The mark of a great sushi restaurant is their ability to appropriately offer a wide selection, without compromising freshness. There is no compromise here! For the love of raw fish, come find out why I can’t stay away :)

All I have to say is sashimi bibimbop. Yum! I love sushi… I have been eating it before I was born! That’s what happens when you have a Japanese mother. You get roll your own sushi night instead of Taco night! That being said I was a bit skeptical about this place. They have super crazy rolls and some non-traditional items. But they made a believer out of me. My Korean co-worker took me there and ordered sashimi bibimbop. It was amazing! I would have never ordered this bowl of rice and what looks like salad with fresh fish and spicy Korean sauces on it if I were there on my own. I am so glad he made me get it. The fish was super fresh and the sauces made a great compliment to it. We went again the other day with a very large group and they accommodated us easily since we called ahead. Does this place have the best service? No. Could the décor be updated? Of course. Is the food amazing? Heck yeah! And in my book, amazing food is the most important thing!

I’ve been here twice. First time I had take out and the second time, today, I came to dine in. Both times I didn’t like my experience. the atmosphere seemed very rushed. When we came to dine in, no one came up to us for a long time to even ask if we wanted a drink. Once she finally managed to come over, we told her what we wanted and then she told us that it would take about 40 minutes to get our food. They could’ve said that a little sooner so we didn’t have to waste our time. Obviously we left.

My friend arrived early and was unsure about their hours as there was no sign outside the door. He used their bathroom and was then asked to wait outside. At this point i arrived and we sat and chatted in my car right in view of the door. Another couple arrived and they appeared to be family and exchanged warm greetings. When they left, he looked right at us and we had to motion to him whether it was okay to enter. When I walked in, I was excited since this place seemed like a nice hole in the wall and I anticipated great food and good service especially since we were the ones there. We chose a table and it only had one menu and the waitress only brought us another when urged to. It was clear when we were ready and we still had to pander for her attention to order appetizers. After we ordered, my friend had to remind her about his appetizer and we again had to struggle to her attention to order a main course and to get water later on. I ordered edamame($ 5) and a chicken teriyaki dinner plate($ 20) while my friend ordered ordered gomae($ 6) and an udon($ 18). The edamame was dry and undersalted. The chicken teriyaki dinner was rather sparse for $ 20. It came with a salad(with barely any dressing), soup(clearly from a box), and a bento box with chicken teriyaki, rice, 6 california rolls and tempura. Then chicken was moist but the sauce was oily. The california rolls were dry and the tempura looked unappetizing. My friend’s udon was completely cooked, yet spartan. The spinach in the gomae was not cooked properly and the sauce was average. Overall, the place was too expensive and the service was nonexistant. I felt like everytime we asked for anything, we were burdensome to the waitress and that she just had better things to do.

This place is Awesome!!! That’s all I have to say. The sashimi is top notch. They have fresh fluke which they get from a tank and then serve to customers back on the body of a still live fluke!!! Crazy fresh. If you are looking for a dining adventure with fresh sashimi this place is it! Please do not judge the looks of the place. It’s. Small place in a strip mall and it is always packed. Recommend it highly.

Apparently this restaurant has no regard for its customers. Unilocal said it closes at 11 pm but just to make sure I called them around 9:15 before heading over there. I got there at 9:45 and the sign on the door said open until 11 and all the lights were on and door was open. I walked in and there were 3 employees sitting at the bar eating. First they stared at me for a minute like I was an alien. Finally one of them says«We’re closed» I was like, «excuse me? I called and your information says open until 11.» Sometimes a girl needs some late night sushi. And he replied«not today» — no apology, nothing. They just decided to close an hour and 15 mins early when a half hour earlier they said they were open until 11. I can’t attest to the food BECAUSETHEYWOULDN’T FREAKINSERVEME but I’m glad I gave them none of my business. This kind of service is reprehensible. Don’t waste your time or money.
