Loved this place! Ordered #1 — Corned beef on rye with coleslaw and Russian dressing! Delicious — lean, warm corned beef, soft bread with a nice crust — highly recommend this deli.

They have the best chicken noodle soup. Their sandwiches are amazing! My son(a picky eater loves it) ate his whole sandwhich. Granted it took a full day. Atmosphere is lowkey. Very casual and quick. Order at the counter and your order comes up quickly. While sitting and eating my sandwhich, the best part,(other than amazing flavor) was watching the awesome counter ladies greet customers as friends. I’ve gone since they opened. I even went when I was in labor. The doctor told me «you could stay now and eat ice chips». I opted for a corned beef special, whole. And went back a few hours later. You can’t go wrong. The corned beef special, Martha’s contribution, the big john… yum. they also make sandwiches to order. Don’t forget the Honeycup mustard and the French roll!

In the many years I’ve lived in Grand Rapids, I took for granted that good deli was something limited to a trip to Zingerman’s in Ann Arbor. I’d tried several places serving pastrami and/or corned beef, and never been impressed. For whatever reason, I’d not gotten around to trying Schnitz Deli. Well, at long last I have, and I really wish I had done so sooner. I ordered the Evan’s Double Dip, the priciest sandwich on the menu, weighing in at $ 10.25. This impressive double decker sandwich contains corned beef, cole slaw, and swiss cheese on one layer, and pastrami, sauerkraut, and thousand island dressing on the other. Hard as it may be to believe, this is just as good as any pastrami sandwich offered at Zingerman’s, but upwards of $ 8 cheaper. Wanting something sweet, I also ordered a square of their German Chocolate Cake. At $ 2.75 per slice, the price is about half of what you’d pay for something at the Downtown Market, while being appreciably larger and much tastier. The pecans were a bit sparse, but the rich coconut topping was quite good. Their dessert might not be as cosmetically appealing as what comes out of a higher end pastry shop, but it is a good deal more satisfying.

Second time here and another great sandwich. Had the Italian the first time and now the Rancher. You can’t go wrong with roast beef, caramelized onions, horseradish sauce.

My favorite sandwich joint, and very close to my house. With daily soup and sandwich specials, about 20 named sandwiches, and build your own options, you can always get something different. The veggie burger is a great option too. Most sandwiches are heavy on the meat. A ‘half’ is just less meat, not an actual half sandwich. I’m a medium-sized 30-something dude with a healthy appetite, and a ‘half’ is all I can handle. They also have a soda fountain, home-made deli salads, brownies and cookies. And catering too. It gets really busy from like 1130 to 1, some come early or late to beat the lunch rush. Room for improvement: styrofoam replacement(brown paper biodegradable ones), or maybe fancier topping options(spinach, cheeses, etc). Very friendly and welcoming staff.

One of my favorite delis! Great sandwiches at a reasonable price. The staff is always very friendly and the place was clean. I love their schnitzel, California, and Brooklyn reuben sandwiches. Food comes out reasonably fast even though they’re really busy. The portions are great and there is always enough to fill you up. If I had to describe my experience with one word it would be fantastic!!!

First visit and I had high expectations. I grew up on deli food and have been looking for a great place. Busy place but very efficient. Great selection of sandwiches but I went with my own creation. I can’t take credit for the creation as it is my favorite sandwich from Corky & Lenny’s in Cleveland. Corned Beef and Turkey on rye with swiss and russian dressing. Schnitz corned beef was good. I like the sandwich warm so I asked for it to be grilled. They charge extra for that! Turkey was cold and not good quality. That was a little disappointing. Will go back but may stick with corned beef and pastrami in the future.

The Schnitz Deli is a longtime favorite of mine. High quality bread, meat, and other ingredients on huge full-size sandwiches. The closest thing in Grand Rapids you’ll ever find to a New York deli.

Literally, the best sandwich place in GR. ive tried about half of their sandwiches over the years, and while I have my favorites, they are all delicious. I also am a huge fan of their soup, especially chili, and the side of potato salad. The staff is friendly, and even though it can get suuuuuper busy(a sign of how good they are), service is always prompt.

Yum! We won a gift card here(thanks Unilocal!), so we stopped by to try some sandwiches around 2:30pm on a Wednesday. There was no wait, but realizing that they close at 3pm, we got our sandwiches to go. I ordered the #18 black russian: corned beef on pumpernickel with grilled onions, swiss cheese, and 1000 island dressing. Omg, my sandwich was not only amazing, it had lots of meat on it! At $ 8.75 for a whole sandwich, I was worried about the portion size, but was not disappointed. The meat was flavorfull, and the grilled onions added a contrasting sweetness to the sandwich. My husband ordered the #3 Brooklyn Reuben: pastrami on pumpernickel with swiss, 1000 island, and sauerkraut… also delish! He especially liked the sandwich because it wasn’t dry! Everyone there was very friendly. They greeted us when we walked in and thanked us for coming when we left. I will definitely go back to try out a different sandwich and maybe some soup or a side item. The restaurant has lots of seating and is connected to Common Grounds, the coffee shop next door.

What a great deli! I have eaten here numerous times and always leave happy. I keep forgetting to get a photo of my sandwich, mainly because I usually attack and disappear it before I can think of anything else. The sandwiches are big, fresh and tasty. They have a large selection and you can feel free to modify them as you prefer. The toppings are great and the meat is both flavorful and plentiful — no skimping here. I sometimes get two sandwiches(one for me, one for my tapeworm), but I can usually be satisfied with one — which is saying something. The desserts are pretty good as well and I haven’t gone wrong with one yet. Service is always friendly and prompt. Really, not much to dislike about this place except for the lack of parking, but with the overall quality, I don’t mind much.

On a day trip to Grand Rapids with the Wife, wanted something different for lunch that we can’t get at home. Our requirements were a big delicious deli sandwich. Shnitz Deli nocked it out of the park. her ruben was a meal with great meat and bread. I had some monster of a thing with both corned beef and pastrami, which I couldn’t finish. I hated to leave it, but started having meat-sweats! Love this PlaceWe’ll be back

My wife and I made the two hour trip to Grand Rapids to watch our granddaughter play in a basketball game. The game finished around 2:30PM, which left us a bit hungry. So my son, who lives in Ada, asked if we’d like to stop at the local deli, which we thought would work fine. The parking and the outside of the deli was decent, and the smell of smoked roast beef was in the air, making me even more hungry. We are in our mid 60’s, and were disappointed that we needed to walk up a flight of stairs to get to the restaurant, but found on the way out, that there is an elevator that we could have used,(we will be back for sure). The staff didn’t do seating or waiting on the tables until,(I think), 3PM, so we were advised to order our own food and just find a table,(which was no problem). I ordered the, «Big John», which was roast beef on a nice bun, and a bottle of water. That was all that I needed, and the beef had a special flavor. The whole sandwich was outstanding, and I would likely order the same thing next time. Everyone else said that theirs was also outstanding; we all had a good time, the noise level was fine, and the atmosphere over by the fireplace was very down-home. The five of us had a very good lunch, and the total cost was only about $ 40,($ 8 apiece). I will be going back here again.

Now I’m not saying I’d brave a blizzard just to eat your sandwiches and baked goods, Schnitz, but I’m heavily implying I’d brave a blizzard to do just that. If I’m ever privileged to live in a time where the human race lives under constant threat from shark — infested tornados, I’d be more than happy to venture out into a desolate hell scape in order to feast on your delectable fudge brownie and Chicago Ruben. The atmosphere of this restaurant is fantastic, the service is beyond friendly, and it serves as a way to take your mind off the painful reality of daily life. Plus, they serve Vernors. To me, that soda will be the reason this world will be freed from our future vicious alien overlords.

Is this where the term«Bland Rapids» was invented? I had the rancher sandwich and cheddar potato soup. My sandwich had horseradish on it but the bite was more minnow than shark. The roast beef was tasteless and included gristle I didn’t order. The soup had a little more going for it but seemed to have a lot of chicken base in it. The service was excellent and the vibe was comfortable. It was busy so obvs many like it – but it’s not for me.
