Good for fans of Biggby coffee, which I am not, but similar taste. Sounds like a place to buy beans more than anything from the other reviews. I always know I’m not at the right coffee place when I fill my own cup from a row of airpots. Very nice staff but not a diehard coffee snobs place to get a cup to drink or hang out either. For that there is Madcap in downtown GR. I had the hazelnut from the airpot and it was hot at least. Also, it sounds like they bake their pastries there, but they looked like they came from a mix. A really good coffee shop has to partner with an actual bakery to get the goods. I’m a little pretentious when it comes to my coffee shop experience but wanted others with my taste to know what is really happening here.

My favorite place whenever I think I need a boost to put myself in a working mood again. The place is clean and organized. Staff is very nice and friendly. Reasonable price.

Schuil Coffee is fantastic coffee and tea house. It was born out of a great ambitions and strong passions to bring perfectly made specialty coffee to the open market. I believe the idea behind Schuil Coffee first began as a coffee roasting facility and later developed an extensive store front. They bring in raw Arabica beans from all over the world and roast them onsite. Over the years little has changed with Schuil Coffee which is good because it means they have held onto their strike standards. They truly have mastered the art of roasting. They always has available a few types of brewed coffee, where you can sample or purchase a cup. I like that they usually have a lighter and a darker roast to choose from. They often have a flavored variety out as well. Each month they feature a particular coffee and sell it at a slightly marked down price. You can buy whole beans or have them grind it up fresh, right before you take it home. They also offer 6 pound bulk bags of beans. They have more selections of specialty roasts and blends than any other place around I know of. I must give a shout out to some of my favorite roast that they offer. If you have not already, I highly encourage you to try these. Celebes Kalossi, Costa Rica La Minita, Genuine Hawaiian Kona, Guatemala Antigua, Kenya AA and last but not least, Sumatra. They also offer their own house blends which are very good too, like the French roast blend or their espresso dark roast. They train their baristas very well. I have never had a poorly made espresso. I thoroughly enjoy getting a double shot from here and a redeye to go. At times I think they brew their coffee a bit week so adding in an espresso is a winner’s way to solve that problem. Schuil’s also offers several coffee accessories from French presses to espresso machines. It is worth mentioning they offer an extensive tea assortment as well. It’s not my cup of tea(pun), but they do have a whole lot to offer in that area. They do have a small place where you can sit and enjoy whatever while you drink your beverage. They have biscotti and other coffee house snacks. They pull in big crowds at times, especially on the weekend. That can cause a bit of a wait but usually they keep things moving pretty quick. I am longtime friends with some people that have worked at Schuil and I’ve heard that they really work their employees hard, earning every penny they get. Owner Greta Schuil is an expert at business and marketing. She truly knows the craft of fine coffee inside and out. All the people that work at Schuils are very kind, knowledgeable and patient to all patrons that come through the door.

I was in Grand Rapids for a family vacation and found Schuil at the top of a coffee search. There’s nothing like a tall cup of coffee to get you through a vacation day with 3 toddlers! Schuil is a bit hidden in a commercial/industrial area just off the main drag. But once you find it, you’ll be happy you did. Service was outstanding, prompt and friendly. The shop itself has a huge selection of coffee, tea, and accessories for brewing/drinking. There was limited seating inside, so plan on carry out. The coffee was excellent, fresh and flavorful. If you’re in the area and need a caffeine fix, skip the chains and head to Schuil!

Best coffee drinks and selection of coffee beans in town. Only bummer is they only have one location, but it’s worth the trip. Just keep in mind more of a grab and go place. Not really a coffee hangout. Other coffee houses in GR are better for that.

The only place I buy coffee beans. The options are amazing, and the atmosphere is very homey and friendly. The staff is always super helpful, even when it’s busy. They have the staple roasts that you can get every time you visit, but they also have some seasonal flavors that I really look forward to. My father even makes a special trip for their green coffee beans to roast himself.

Hands down the best coffee in Western Michigan. Schuil Coffee is a Grand Rapids staple and has been in the same location for over 25 years. I started going as a kid and continued through my adult years in Grand Rapids. Now that I live on the East Coast I still order Schuil online because you really can’t find that quality of bean and roast at their price point, even with shipping. Schuil roasts all of their own coffee on site so you know you’re getting the freshest possible cup of joe. A lot of people are big fans of their flavored coffees and holiday blend(which is only available in Winter). I personally always enjoyed their Iced Cappuccino in store, and if I really want to splurge on their bagged coffee I get the Genuine Hawaiian Kona or Jamaican Blue Mountain(which you can’t find anywhere else). The shop itself is definitely less a café and more a store so don’t expect to have space to spend hours hanging out. This place is all about the coffee and there is nothing wrong with that. High Quality Coffee — Friendly Staff — Unique Flavors — Brewing Equipment — Original

This is where I buy my coffee and beans, they grind it, the selection is amazing and the staff is beyond knowledgeable with good recommendations. I have been here a few times and was pleased with the results of taking my coffee home and enjoying it from the machine. Baristas always take their time with the coffee and you can tell from the taste. I’ve wanted to hang out in their little lobby area but honestly I haven’t had the time but it looks lovely. Additionally they have the free flavors to the side so you can get some tries in and can get a little diverse with your coffee. Anyways. Coffee aficionados rejoice. Schuil is here.

I’ve been to Schuil Coffee several times now; I’m not from the area so my experiences have been spaced apart pretty substantially but, that said, all of my experiences have been equally charming. I am sitting here now. Personally, I enjoy the atmosphere of the café’s storefront. I like the small cozy feeling. I like the serious milliux of coffee snobbery. And really love the full on onslaught of coffee scents when you walk in the door. The only caveat with concern to the café’s atmosphere is that on every single one of my visits the same crazy, elderly man has come in to loudly rant about conservative politics. I get that it’s not the café’s fault but I kid you not every time I come in he shows up(what are the odds?) The café is well priced; I paid ~$ 2.50 for 3 cups of coffee plus 9.99 for a pound of beans. The staff has been very accommodating to me every time I’ve come in(not that I require serious accommodation); they’re very friendly. And I couldn’t find a complaint there if I tried. They seem to be more available to their clients than most baristas are. I once ordered a pound of their Kenya AAA online. It was good. I expected a bit fuller bodied and winier coffee from that Kenya but I thoroughly enjoyed it all the same. Additionally, I’ve noticed that their coffee doesn’t hold up at Red Cedar Café(in Lansing; the only café that I know serves their coffee). In house and online I’ve loved their roasts at Red Cedar Café I tolerate it. I wonder why that is? With regards to their competition, I like MadCap(in downtown Grand Rapids) but refuse to acknowledge they make a better product. Personally, I find Schuil’s brand of coffee snobbery less over bearing and aggressive. And don’t find MadCap’s brand of snobbery warranted with regards to similar product. I know the location is less central for many people. But I think you might find it worth the detour. –Tim(but not the same«Tim» mentioned in Dominque’s review)

Went here on the recommendation of a fellow blogger. You pick up the smell of roasting coffee as you enter the parking lot, well before you get out of the car or open your windows! Fun little coffee shop in front of this industrial building on 29th. It’s just a little off of the hustle and bustle of 28th Street in a mixed commercial/industrial type area, so it’s pretty easy to get to without a lot of traffic to contend with as you’re turning into, or out of, the parking lot. Friendly staff, and this place should be pretty much Nirvana if you’re a real coffee fan. The fellow who helped us took plenty of time helping Tim find a good coffee for him – a nice strong roast without any frou frou flavors. I’m m ore of an ice tea fan, and I was happy to see lots of decent ice tea selections(mostly Stash brand) and get a nice glass of decent ice tea without the nasty after-taste you so often get at other places. It looked like a lot of regulars were there during the weekday afternoon we were in the place, picking up beans or relaxing over a cuppa and working on their computers(one couple was in for their bi-yearly trip to pick up a bunch of beans, and it was like old-home week for them!). We’ll definitely be back(Tim’s parents live in GR)…and it’s close to where we usually stay when we’re in town for an overnight. Convenient, local and friendly.

Nice coffee shop. Plenty of options of beans to buy. I got and espresso drink while I was there and I didn’t love the espresso flavor. However I liked shopping for beans. I live out of town so it’s nice to know they ship beans internationally from the online shop!

Cute café with all of four tables, but a huge variety of beans and coffee and tea-related paraphernalia and friendly staff. Unfortunately I could barely taste the espresso in my cappuccino.

They have a great coffee shop at their location on 29th street. Alot of effort is made to make sure the freshest cup of coffee is made available to their customers.
