One of the better places in Grand Rapids for sushi. Took a little while to get the food but the fish was super fresh and rolls were excellent. Server was friendly. Definitely returning. Update: Went here again, service was super fast and got the food in something like 8 minutes. Really love this place.

If it’s busy, they’re –busy– and you should expect to wait a bit for your sushi. But when they’re slow, the sushi comes out so quickly you’ll be waiting for your drink still. Everything is delicious, especially their takoyakii appetizer! I couldn’t decide between the takoyakii and the albap, so I got both and they were both amazing.

This used to be my favorite sushi place when I first moved to Grand Rapids, but there are so many places that have much better quality sushi. I do like that Sushi Kuni has several Korean dishes beyond the typical bibimbap. The spicy tofu soup is one of my favorites. The quality of the fish here is not that great. I have had the sashimi on several occasions and it is clear that the fish has been frozen and thawed. I know that most fish at sushi restaurants has been frozen, but the freshness of the fish at other sushi places is much better. The restaurant itself is very quiet(no ambient music), so talking with your group can be slightly awkward. I felt like I was shouting when I was there last, and I was overly aware of the people around me who seemed to be silently listening to everything I was saying– not hard to do when you could hear a pin drop! I would say check this place out for decent Korean dishes but skip the sushi and go to Jakku for that instead.

I thought the atmosphere was great. However, my gf was a bit less enthusiastic. The service was OK. Our waitress was very friendly. This was our first time at this restaurant. We were there specifically to try the hot stone bibimbap. Unfortunately it wasn’t very good. The initial presentation was acceptable. However, once you began to mix the ingredients in with the rice you realized that there really wasn’t much to it. It felt essentially like fried rice and a hot stone bowl. They added mushrooms and skimped on the beef. It was certainly busy. So apparently some of their other dishes might be better. Going forward, we will definitely not return for bibimbap.

I really like this place. I haven’t gone up to five stars yet because I want to try some more of their rolls and their udon noodles. I usually go here for lunch, the crowd is just right, pleasantly busy but not over crowded. The service is exceptionally prompt without feeling rushed. They have an absolutely awesome spicy seafood soup! It’s just the right amount of heat and salt. The seafood in it is great and the portion size is perfect for a starter. I typically get a sushi and sashimi combo. The chef has his choice of sushi. I’ve always been impressed by the chefs selection. The plating is very simple and clean. There isn’t a ton of sauce floating around, rolls that are falling apart and garnishes thrown all over the plate. I like seeing a cool, clean presentation with sushi and this places delivers just that, in my experience. The quality of fish, flavor of rice and freshness stand out. I’m not into a million flavors coming together into a culinary Picassoesque experience when it comes to sushi. Sometimes I’ll find some sort of spicy roll but generally I prefer really simple, fresh sashimi and nigiri. This place is a little out of the way, in a strip mall off 28th and Breton but it’s well worth the drive. I’ll be coming here much more often.

I would give this restaurant 5 stars, but our food took so long to come out! The two tables next to us who sat down and ordered after us got their orders first. We didn’t even order a lot either, only 4 rolls. Even our salads and miso soup took a long time, almost to the point where I thought the waitress had forgotten about it. Although the wait was long, the food itself was great and I would definitely come back if I’m in the area. We ordered a miso soup, side salad, avocado salad, and four rolls — 2 yellowtail rolls, a Choi’s roll, and a Boston roll. The total came to about $ 44, so it’s slightly more expensive than other sushi restaurants I’ve been to, but not terribly expensive. The yellowtail was very fresh, and the avocado salad was a big portion and pretty filling on its own. The Choi’s roll is supposed to be «topped with flame-kissed filet mignon» but we found that the rice itself was torched/toasted and the meat wasn’t warm or hot. The waitress was friendly and apologetic about the wait for the food and topped off our green tea/water regularly. I liked the dim lighting and wooden décor. Not SUPER fancy, but nicer than other sushi bars I’ve been to.

Went here for the 1st time recently and enjoyed the experience. My husband and i ordered the vegas roll and tiger roll, which were both very good. We also ordered the takoyaki, fried octopus dumplings. This was something we never tried before or have seen on other menus. It was suggested in the reviews and was a good decision because they were quite yummy.

This has really cemented the fact that apparently I should not eat sushi in Grand Rapids unless I go to Maru because they are the only decent place. I was really excited to try Sushi Kuni because of the good reviews. I came in for lunch and it was empty, save for me. The waitress was nice and I sat at the bar. The interior of the restaurant is kind of strange. It’s like certain parts they tried to update and then just left the rest. So it’s this bizarre blend of modern and grandma’s kitchen stools. It’s hard to describe. I got the sushi set C for lunch which was seven pieces of chef’s choice, my choice of a salmon, tuna, or cali roll, and choice of soup or salad. It was $ 16 and I guess my whole impression of it was«stingy». The pieces of sushi were literally so small. Like the smallest pieces I have even seen in my life. The rice was like the size of a piece of bubbleyum bubble gum. The fish was only slightly bigger. The fish was also not the freshest but it wasn’t terrible. There was no wasabi on it, fyi. The cali roll was also super underwhelming, so tiny and I actually don’t think there was any crabstick in there. I did not say anything but probably because I was the only patron they gave me two free pieces which were masago, one plain, one wasabi. The wasabi that came with the sushi was super weak. I’m not sure what the deal with that was. So overall, the staff was really nice and efficient but I would not eat here again. The quality and value is poor.

Everything was just ok. Service wasn’t amazing and neither was the sushi. We ordered a bunch of stuff(the harry potter, the bbq roll, etc) and when it all came out, we were like ok, this doesn’t look too bad, and when we ate it, it wasn’t bad either. I guess our expectations were a bit high. But don’t get me wrong, I’ve had worse sushi and I’ve also had better. We couldn’t really differentiate which were which sushi rolls. The Harry Potter roll sounded amazing and I was excited to try it from the description, but when all of the rolls came out, I couldn’t tell which was which besides the bbq rolls which came wrapped in a foil on fire. The sushi looked smaller than other places as well. The place was pretty dim also, so I guess that’s another reason why it was hard to tell the difference between the rolls. Also another reason why I’ve rated this place 3 stars is, I understand sushi places are expensive. When I go to sushi places, I expect to splurge a little. But if the sushi place is gonna be pricey, I expect to have an amazing experience. Meaning server was great, atmosphere was good, sushi being memorable. And I didn’t get all of that. Our bill came up to be over $ 200 for the 4 of us. Now last but not least, would I be back? Nah, reason being, I’ve had better sushi in Grand Rapids. Moving on to find a better sushi spot.

Amazing meal, sushi rolls were phenomenal, love the shrimp shumai. Best part of my meal was having MY as our server. She was very helpful, I asked about her favorites and recommendations, my date had never had sushi before. She was extremely forth coming with her thoughts, which I greatly appreciated. He will definitely be eating sushi again. I got the great pleasure of getting to hear MY with her other guest. Was very impressed on how she interacted with a family of 4, with 2 young kids and the dad who asked for silverware because they didn’t know how to use chopsticks. She brought kids chopsticks to them, very thoughtful. It was lovely to hear someone else enjoying there evening! I fell in love with her when she asked for my ID, and not the ID of my date. From then on she was on point. MY, I thank you and please thank the chefs that made my dinner exceptional!!!

Kudos to your taste in Hayao Miyazaki music! Nothing like eating a good meal with good music that takes you back to childhood movies like Spirited Away! :) I don’t think I’ve ever complimented a restaurant for their music, so you guys get a gold star. Sushi Kuni’s food is fresh, the prices are average and the sushi selection is off the charts. It takes me a while(forever) to decide what to order. My husband loves their tempura shrimp udon soup and spicy tuna rolls. Favorite: One thing that really stood out to me was their Takoyaki which are Japanese octopus dumplings. I was hesitant to try them because they sound so… different and kind of… gross but… they were delicious and exploded with flavor. I would order them again indefinitely. This is my #2 Sushi favorite in West Michigan. It offers a typical date ambiance, good music, and a very large variety of sushi, soups, bentos… etc. I miss this restaurant. Eat well for me Unilocalers. Eat away.

In my opinion, the best sushi in GR(and I know a few Japanese people who agree). The fish tastes fresh, the specialty roll selection is large, and the Korean food is great too. As with most sushi places, you’ll get miso soup and a house salad with ginger sauce along with most of the meals. They changed the ginger sauce recipe a few years back, and it’s not as awesome as it used to be. I usually like starting with gyoza or seaweed salad and then ordering an assortment of rolls to share. If you’re with a group, this is the way to go — you’ll get to try a bit of everything. Don’t feel obliged to only order special rolls. I usually like to get a salmon hand roll for myself too. The spicy seafood bibimbop is great, and chicken katsu is a classic Japanese entrée. Order the chirashi if you’re into sashimi and have never tried this dish before. It’s a bit expensive, but an experience you don’t want to miss out on. If you’re feeling some dessert, there are many ice cream options: green tea, red bean, mochi, tempura. I’ve never had tempura ice cream, though. Protip: it’s fun to get seated in a private tatami room, in which you sit on a cushion on wooden seats.

Food is very good. They have a nice assortment of Japanese and Korean dishes and sushi. They also have a small kids menu with reasonably priced and healthy options. I’ve been to sushi kuni 4 times and have always sat at the sushi bar. I have been to many sushi bars and restaurants around the country. The one thing sushi kuni needs to take their restaurant to the next level is to get sushi chefs that are friendly, high energy, and exciting to be around. These guys are boring. They don’t even put your sushi in front of you at the bar when it is ready. Instead they put it on the waitstaff counter for the waiter or waitress to deliver it. They need to get some personality. They don’t even talk or smile at all. I think it’s because the grumpy owner ruins it for everyone. If they can bring some fun to the bar I have no doubt they would do much better.

We came here for a late lunch and were certainly happy with the choice! I started off with a ginger salad and the dressing was really good. I’m glad I tried it. My husband tried the miso soup and it was flavored really well. For lunch, I had the Philadelphia rolls and the Spicy Tuna rolls. I was very excited that the Philadephia roll had avocado in it, as that is rare in the Grand Rapids area from the sushi that I have tried. The Spicy Tuna rolls were really good and had a nice spicy to it. My husband had the pork tempura with this really yummy sauce. The vegetables were good; however, there were a lot of onions in comparison to the peppers and brocolli. Overall, it was really good. The service was good and we were in and out in about 35 minutes. We will be back.
