The first time I tried El Charro Viejo I was skeptical, but I’m a such a fan of great Mexican food I had to try it. Their food is fresh, tasty and authentic. Servings are HUGE and pricing is reasonable. Love the Carne Asada Platter, the grilled veggies are so good. Another favorite is their Chile Relleno. It’s fresh with a nice flavorful sauce and they usually manage to remove all of the seeds. I’ve not had anything on the menu thus far I wouldn’t recommend. Try it! It’s good!!!

Best Mexican food in town! I love Mexican food; Americanized and authentic. This place is one of the authentic places around and is better than any of the other places, in my opinion. We had three different plates between the three of us and all were so delicious!

This is the best Mexican food in Grants Pass. Great food, service and atmosphere is nice. The have breakfast all day with many classic Mexican dishes. I especially like the huevos rancheros, tortilla soup and tacos. You won’t be disappointed with anything you order.

Passing through town and decided to try something off the main strip. The hot sauce was very good and I really liked the extra hot sauce. The service was friendly but under staffed. If you have patience the food is fresh and quite good. Coming from California we are picky about our Mexican food.

on our vacation to Grants Pass we ate here because of the good reviews on Unilocal and we were not disappointed. the food was better than many mexican restaurants I’ve been to, much better. The menu is huge and so are the portions so bring your appetite. The décor is out dated and the vinyl seats are worn through in some places, which doesn’t bother me but may be important to others. The wait staff was very friendly. There are many mexican restaurants in Grants Pass and I would highly recommend this one if you want friendly service, lots of menu choices and great mexican food.

By far the best Mexican food here in town, meat was Seasoned and very flavorful with a little kick. Service was a little slow but very friendly, nice and clean with a warm atmosphere. I will definitely be returning to try many of the mien u options.

The food is beyond good. I think it’s the best I have ever had and being from California I’ve had my share of Mexican food to compare it too. From the salsa to the cabbage side salad it is all fantastic. It’s very clean and the service is great!!!

The food is absolutely delicious! I’ve had a lot of Mexican food in my life, and this is one of my all time favorites! The staff are very sweet, and were very helpful and accommodating for our large group. We look forward to coming here for margaritas more often!

El Charro Viejo is a small place, with old décor and in need of an update. However, it does not effect or detract from the quality of the meals served and received here. This is solid Mexican food, with a decent house salsa. Though the thick cut tortilla chips were over done, I could tell that if they weren’t the combination would have been great. It was still enjoyable and good, but not great. The restaurant also offers a nice selection of cold bottle beers and call to order margaritas, along with sodas, water and other drink choices. I ordered the Chili Verde Super Burrito, wet — it was huge as big as the platter it was served on and loaded with rice, beans and delicious tender pork Verde smothered in the house green sauce. The portion was big enough to share, or if you are really hungry you won’t be after eating this. My wife ordered the Enchiladas with Chicken, again a huge platter of food(I say platter and not plate because they are just that huge platters) and it was equally delicious. Well prepared tender chicken shredded and stuffed full into the enchiladas. It was such a large portion that she could not finish it and a to go box was needed. Service was friendly and professional, though it felt more like eating with family. A very relaxed and casual dining environment and it made for a wonderful meal during our visit. This is a good little Mexican restaurant and you will most likely not be disappointed. Well worth a visit. A solid 3.5 stars — rounded up for having my preferred bottle beer on hand and ice cold. 276

You can tell a lot about a Mexican restaurant by the chips and salsa. The chips were thicker than I prefer but not covered in oil or salt. The salsa was the best I have had recently, not too spicy and with a good ratio of chopped fresh ingredients versus the blended picante style. Had the cheese Relleno stuffed Poblano chili with verde sauce dinner plate due to another review bragging about it… it was not the best ever for me, but well above most(but I almost always order the Relleno unless a restaurant has capititulated to the Anaheim pepper to keep timid customers from complaining… so my experience is above the casual fan). Also, order the Horchata… the best I have had in the PNW.

One of my favorite Mexican Restaurants in Oregon. I enjoy the soft tacos. The meats have always been very good. Good salsa and chips.

We had Chile Verde dinner and chicken tacos. the verda was very good with just enough spice. the chicken tacos were a little dry but the salsa spiced it up. excellent margaritas and ice cold beer. the décor is some what out dated and worn. Very family friendly. this was a date night choice and we were not disappointed.

Friendly service, and some decent American style Mexican food. This is what I call«oven mitt Mexican food»; you know, where the waitress comes out with oven mitts on, and warns you that the plate is hot? Everything is in a similar ranchero style sauce, and the beans are thin as water… Yeah, that type of Mexican food. It hit the spot, and was tasty, if not slightly overpriced. I get far better Mexican food out of the food carts in Portland, and for much less. Partner had the chile relleno plate. The batter was really soft and eggy, which I like, but he isn’t too fond of. SIDENOTE to vegetarians… there are very few options for you here. The chile relleno plate, along with a veggie burrito, and a cheese quesadilla were the only meat free options. I had a taco and enchillada combo. Shredded beef taco was tasty, but beef was kind of dry. The chicken enchillada was much better. I really liked the green chile sauce they used. Service was friendly, and they didn’t bat an eye about refilling chips and salsa. If ever in the area again, I will most likely try somewhere else, but keep this place in mind as a back-up.

Fantastic Mexican food stop! The salsa was so so delicious! I really appreciated that they brought the children’s food out first. The meat was not dry and the flavors were spot on! We will stop here again. Very reasonable priced, you are definitely filmed up when you leave. Thanks a bunch!

Very nice service. Good salsa. The chili verde burrito was of a generous size but the chili Verde itself was thin and needrd more flavor. Perhaps just cooked long5rr. S bit of cheese on top would have finished the dish.

The service was good, the food was fine, the atmosphere needed some work. For Grants Pass this is probably better Mexican food than any other, but if you were to plot this restaurant in any major metropolitan area it really wouldn’t hold up too well to criticism. As an overview, the price is fine, you will leave full, the service is very good, but the ingredients and preparation are a bit subpar.

Having grown up in Texas, Mexican food elsewhere is rarely not a disappointment, but this is without question the best I have had in Oregon. Salsa — DELICIOUS! Tortillas — DELICIOUS! Chicken — DELICIOUS! — this is usually a problem at most of the Mexican restaurants I’ve been to here. It’s quite often stringy, bland and dry, but Charro Viejo’s was moist, flavorful and delicious. When I was done eating, I wanted to eat here again, but unfortunately I was too full. I almost forgot, the glasses for the ice tea and Diet Pepsi were huge, which with as much as I drink, was a big plus.

Great food! We both got the enchilada/tamale combo. Both were so delicious, but my favorite part of the entire meal were the refried beans. They were buttery delicious! The service could have been a little better. The waiter seemed to get sidetracked by another table of people that seemed to be friends or family. If it weren’t for that, I would give 5 stars.
