Met some friends here for a walk. There were piles of dog poop every few feet. Maybe if they supplied dog poop bags people would pick up after their dogs?

Walkers, runners, bicyclists, bird watchers; come one, come all! The Rollins Savanna offers some great, well-kept, wide open trails. There’s nothing too confusing here and in fact, there are a multitude of maps posted and downloadable. There are at least 2 entrances with parking and restrooms: one at Atkinson/Washington, east of Rte. 83, where there is also water and a Native Seed Nursery; and one at Drury Lane, south of Rollins. It’s basically a crushed gravel 3.5 mile circular trail following the savanna’s perimeter, and a secondary 1.5 mile trail attached to the main loop. In addition to that, there are a lot of little off-shoots where you can rack up additional mileage if you are so inclined. One such off-shoot leads you to Sunrise Park where there are tennis courts and a playground. There is also a section off the main 3.5 mile main loop dedicated to bird watching. You will see a diverse group here: serious and novice athletes, families, leashed pets, bird watchers, people strolling on breaks. Quite the variety of people, and landscapes actually– although it is pretty flat(hello, savanna!), but there are also some tree clusters here and there, between the fields and fields of wildflowers, reeds, creeks and so on. The wide trails are especially nice IMO as it gives everyone a wide berth. Time is well spent here with nicely maintained trails and facilities, and pretty landscape leaving you feeling like you are much farther out of civilization than you actually are– assuming you count the burbs as civilization; I do, city snobs. ;) Keep your pets leashed(coyotes!), and know that you are the most obvious target for a lightening strike in this very flat setting– so use your brain in inclement weather. ;)
