My favorite Mexican food restaurant in Green Bay. The food tastes like homemade Mexican food. The prices are very reasonable and the portions are above average. The customer service is excellent.

Love the food here but the service is always so slow. And I say always because I’ve been here many times and it never changes. On our last visit they sat us down, dropped off chips and salsa, then went MIA. When he finally took our order we wanted some cheese dip. A different waiter dropped it off and when we asked for extra napkins he just pointed to our waiter who was a table or two behind him. Didn’t even have the decency to say a word and clearly wasn’t about to serve us anything. Food came quick but after that we never saw our waiter. It was Halloween so the staff was all dressed up and every time I looked to flag down our waiter they were all too busy taking pictures of their costumes. As much as I love the food I can’t deal with the inattentive, rude staff anymore and will take my business elsewhere.

Great homemade chips and salsa. The food is pretty typical of a local Mexican restaurant, nothing to write home about. The margaritas are made from mix, sub par, and fairly expensive for central Wisconsin. Good and attentive wait staff.

We had the Special and Huevos con Chorizo. The food came quickly and was very good. The service was very inattentive. There were a lot of staff on, but few were working. When not attending to customers, they were huddled in the back of the second dining room. We knew this because we could see them coming and going, but more annoying, we could hear them. Several tables around us also had to flag someone down to get service. This is NOT the service we expect or are used to. It looks like we’ll drive to the East side location where we enjoy great service and great food.

Fajitas with frozen veggies. enough said. The guac was weak as well. They give you a ton of food, but pass on the fajitas.

Honestly very VERY good food, LOADED with flavor! From appetizers to main course and dessert-five stars, hands down! But… Unfortunately, our service was soooo slow! Ugh! It was packed when we arrived, and at least 5 min past before we were seated. Once seated, ten min passed before our drink order was taken-meanwhile, while we waited we watched ppl walk in, be seated, and orders were taken… I think where we were seated was a location they don’t normally use, so consistently they forgot we were there. So, and easily forgiven ordeal, especially after the amazing, overly satisfying, absolutely astonishing meal! Hopefully next time we are seated in a more rememberable spot ;)

It is a shame they have horrible service, customer service, and routinely make mistakes on to go orders because the food is quite good. I use to eat here weekly but after constant mistakes on to go orders and zero accountability on their end for their mistakes I had to stop. They were very obstinate and generally rude about it as well. The in house service is not much better. Napkins are like gold there apparently and if you ask for more or additional salsa you will be waiting while they rummage around and do other things until they finally decide to bring you what you asked for. Their wait staff skills are very poor. All the while your food will be staring you in the face, getting cold, while you wait for green verde salsa. Good luck. I’m through with this place though.

It’s always fast service and delicious food. I’ve never had anything I didn’t like and their salsa is amazing.

This is our favorite restaurant of any kind in Brown County. We love our special evenings at Plae or Bleu or Kaleidoscope(another good one) but we eat here ALLTHETIME. This place makes a steak, avocado, onion, pepper and lime taco that is just so good. Ingredients are fresh and prepared in house. You can get every possible level of heat here from Full Gringo to impossibly hot. We have always been treated right and service has always, every time, been fast enough, friendly enough and accurate and attentive enough to get a full 20% tip. Our servers have good suggestions for us when we want to go deeper into the menu or even off menu. I have been to a LOT of restaurants in and around Green Bay in every price range. I was born in a picker town in Central Washington where more Spanish is spoken than English, and learned about Mexican food from my friends’ moms. I love a good steak, a great soup and excellent, inventive salads and good sushi is heaven. But for everyday comfort prepared deliciously from fresh at low prices we always come back to El Sarape East. West is almost as good.

The food is always freshly prepared and delicious! Having eaten regularly at both the East and the West side locations, I have to question the legitimacy of some of the bad reviews here. Or wonder if people are confusing El Sarape with someplace else. In all my many visits, I have NEVER encountered waitstaff who could not speak English. I have NEVER been treated rudely, NEVER had to wait more than minutes for service, and usually am in and out in under 30 minutes if that’s how quickly I need to do it. I’ve certainly never been served enchilladas swimming in a soup bowl. And when I get a carry-out, they ask whether I want green or red, and how many containers of each I want — and I’ve never paid a dime extra no matter how many I get.(And I certainly ask for more than I need just for that meal.) Maybe I’m just incredibly lucky… though the rest of my life wouldn’t seem to indicate this ;-) Seriously folks, I’ve eaten«authentic» food(whatever that is) in Mexico and New Mexico, and love El Sarape, and unless you’re stuck on the idea that all Mexican food must taste exactly like it does in El Paso or something, I think you’ll like it too. At least give it a try and if you don’t agree, try one of the other recommendations.

Pretty good mexican, nothing extraordinary, but good all around. Better than a few other places I’ve been to in Green Bay

I am in Green Bay? I live outside Chicago and frequent a lot of good Mexican. Regardless of what others have said chips were homemade as well as the salsa. Both tasty. Only had two ribeye avocado tacos but man they were good!!! Would go back without question. Staff extremely polite and attentive.

The food is good here but you have to like being treated as an annoyance. Nobody, and I mean not a soul in the place seems to give a hoot about service. We generally go in a group of 6 or more and tonight we were«greeted» with a sneer and«Are you serious?» They were very busy but we had no problem waiting, except they didn’t even offer a wait time and left us standing there. We offered to split up into smaller groups and then he «hostess» talked into her little headset and a man came over and told us he has«nothing» — we asked to wait until seating opened up and were all but told not to let the door hit us on the way out. All the while people were leaving and a booth with two tables next to it RIGHTINFRONTOFUS opened up! Rude and condescending, and it’s not the first time service here has been questionable. Is there ANYONE professional who works or manages this place? My guess would be no. Keep looking, Green Bay, good Mexican with considerate service IS out there. It’s certainly NOT at El Sarape on Oneida.

Love their burritos. Tried Faja Burrito this time and it was excellent. Loved the grilled steak, bell peppers and onions. I think it’s my new favorite. We normally get the regular burrito with shredded beef. My wife and I always split a burrito and that combined will the free chips and salsa fill us up perfectly. If you’re in a hurry try a burrito, they are of generous size and are served quickly.

Summary: Great Lunch specials. Delicious steak burrito, Avoid the chicken and my server wasn’t attentive. Review: The good: I had a mini steak burrito and one chicken taco. The mini burrito which isn’t mini by any means was a lunch special for only $ 3.75. It’s a hell of a deal. The steak was delicious, very tender and seasoned perfectly. tomatoes and lettuce were also fresh. I’ll be back again. The bad: chicken taco sucked. the chicken was dry, heavy on the dark meat side, and just didn’t taste good. Stick with the steak. My server really blew, She didn’t refill my drink at all or at any point asked how I was doing. I had to get out of my seat to get her attention to get my check.

NOTE: El Sarape has two locations. My rating is based off of the west side and being an outside visitor to your city. WESTSIDE — ONEIDASTREET favor more of the typical Americanized Mexican. You’ll hear lots of burritos and tacos w/cheese being ordered. Still the same great chips and salsa, and customer service as the east side, location is favorable and easy to get to. EASTSIDE off of MASONSTREET — has more of traditional flare. Tacos are similar to a tanqueria(cilantro, onions, limes). Dishes try to hone in on traditional Mexican cooking, something your abuela would make; They do a pretty good job at it. They have awesome caldos and their caldo de cameron, amazingly delicious! I am not a fan of their cocktail but do love puerco dishes. Don’t get me started on their salsa verde, so far so good. All in all for the west side, for me it’s better as your choices on the west side of Green Bay seem to be very commercialized, chain, or simply lacking. If you find El Azteca, Los Banditos, Margarita as the best mexican… I suggest you check your palate and try something a tad bit more authentic… than something that is equivalent to Qdoba or Taco B. Mexican is not always cheesy, comes in a hard shell or in burrito form.

I wouldn’t even give this place a one star unless I had to. Taco bell has better Mexican food. I ordered a combination plate with chicken tacos. They literally took chunks of chicken thighs and threw it in a soggy tortilla. They couldn’t even shred it.

I’m loving, loving, loving El Sarape! I usually eat at Caliente in De Pere because it’s close to where I live, the food however is mediocre… God, how I miss good Mexican food! I went to El Sarape seeking one thing, it’s how I measure every Mexican restaurant against each other… wait… Wait… CARNEASADA… The resurant is bright, big and happy… It’s in a strip mall next to noodles and company. First the chips are good, but the two salsas they bring are excellent, one tastes like it’s homemade, with fresh garlic and cilantro, the other is a verde salsa. Both are top notch… Ordered drinks, the only disappointment is they only have wine margaritas, no hard stuff, they also have a pretty good sized beer selection. I opened the menu and there it was … CARNEASADA… The plate once it was brought to me was beautiful, a grilled pepper on top along with grilled green onions…(look at the pic I posted). The best however was the Carne which was crisp on the outside and very tender and moist on the inside… loved it. Try the place you won’t be disappointed. Prices are pretty inexpensive.
