The second star is for the great service we got at the counter from a cheerful, helpful young man. The first star is the most we could give this place. Being new to GSO, we naturally asked around for the best burgers and the best hot dogs in town. Yum Yum kept coming up as the place to go for the best hot dogs and ice cream. We were excited! It was crowded so we figured it must be good, and we greedily grabbed the last inside table. Cash only wasn’t a problem since the prices are very inexpensive. We got the«all the way» dogs, bags of chips and sodas with high hopes of this being our new«go to» hot dog dive joint. Yikes! We were stunned at how this tasteless and soggy tiny little hot dog could be the one we had heard so much about! What a DISAPPOINTMENT! My husband got black cherry ice cream to see if the ice cream is what all the fuss is about. Uh, no. Barely any black cherry flavor. As other reviewers have said, tradition trumps quality at Yum Yum. We get that but will continue to make our hot dog runs to Costco or grill them at home.

Yum Yums features $ 1.50 hot dogs and a great $ 2.50 cone(they called it a small, but is a lot of ice cream) of homemade delicious ice cream that has been made on the premises. If you can think of a more delightful way to spend four bucks, please tell me. This time I had chocolate, but peach is on the horizon. They have pints and half-gallons for take home. The location is actually on the UNC campus and college kids are running throughout.

If I could give this less than one star, I would. Gross. The hotdogs themselves are that odd red color and tasteless. The chili is slightly more favorable, but still bland. I guess people continue to go because it’s been there forever. And they obviously don’t know a real chili dog when they eat one. Save yourself some disappointment.

First let me say that I am not a fan of hot dogs that need a bunch of stuff piled on them to give them taste. From that perspective, this place has the best ice cream but the hot dogs are not my favorite. Sorry, but I prefer a dog that has its own flavor. Give me a Nathan’s with mustard and maybe some kraut, please. On the other hand I have driven miles for the black cherry ice cream!

Yum Yums is a BIG reason to go to UNC Greensboro! Between classes, I would frequent here often. I have eaten these hot dogs and their ice cream for years, since the late 70’s/early 80’s when I would come to UNC Greensboro with my dad while he was working on his Master’s.Then, I decided to go to UNC Greensboro. It’s a Greensboro staple. However, don’t go to Yum Yums expecting any fancy burgers, dogs or fries. You order hot dogs(they only serve the red ones) and you can order chips. I like my dogs topped with chili, mustard, slaw, onions and covered in Texas Pete(NO ketchup!!). Oh yeah, I always wash mine down with an ice cold bottle of Cheerwine! After I scarf down 2 or 3 hot dogs, I always get their pineapple or peach ice cream. Around Christmas time, I always get the eggnog ice cream(2 Scoops)! All of their ice cream is homemade, of course. Yum Yum has been making ice cream for 110 years! YES, I said 110 years! They started out as an ice cream stand in downtown G’boro. You just don’t make ice cream for 110 years and not be great! My 11 year old son loves to come here with me, too. My wife doesn’t eat hot dogs… her loss! CASHONLY!!! I can’t believe I am 6′-2″ and weigh under 200 lbs! Guess moving away helped?!? LOL

IN and OUT — Quick service, delicious hotdogs and ice cream. I ate here a lot during my time at UNC-Greensboro. It’s always a pleasure to drop in when I’m in the area for a quick bite to eat. If you want the hotdog«all the way», it runs for $ 1.80. I believe it’s a «cash only» stop in restaurant.

This is one of my favorites when I visit GSO. I grew up on Yum Yums. My great– grandfather was a fan, he knew the original owners from when he worked at «Women’s College» in the 1940’s-50’s. I love the hot dogs ‘all the way’ style with a Cheerwine soda. Then I enjoy some homemade chocolate ice cream or a shake to go.

BREAKING: Yum Yum’s reduced to just one Yum. I think nostalgia and longevity have taken over good sense when it comes to talking about this place. It is the type of place where grandparents went, who brought their kids, who now bring their kids, and on down the line. FACT: A college student can find sustenance here for cheap. FICTION: The hot dogs are good. FACT: It is a good place to get ice cream on a nice day. FICTION: It is a good place to bring your kids while school is in session. FACT: The staff is super fast at taking and filling your order FICTION: The staff is patient. The fact the hot dogs are pink is overrated. If you’ve decided to eat a hot dog, you’ve accepted your fate as eating something questionable(despite that, I love a good hot dog). The problem for me is… the meat doesn’t taste good. The chili doesn’t taste good. The slaw doesn’t taste good. Each blander than the last. The ice cream is just ice cream. Anything from a marble slab type place will out-class it on flavor, and a Cook-Out milkshake will be a better value. You can’t eat inside while student’s are at school, it will just be too crowded. You can eat outside if you don’t mind pulling up a wall seat. All these things taken together… i would not recommend coming here for the food or ice cream. If you want the nostalgia experience… fine, but don’t expect to be wowed.

I love this place! The ice cream texture is so interesting and the flavors are great! I’ll probably never find myself in Greensboro again, but if I do, I’ll be hitting up this spot.

I love this place! The hot dogs are the pink kind and the toppings are amazing. They have the best hot dog chili I have ever had. Having gone to college in Greensboro this place has always been one of my favorite places to eat. It is cheap and simple, but worth going way out of the way just to get a hot dog and amazing homemade ice cream. You really can’t go wrong here.

I don’t eat pork and even if I did not sure id be down for the neon pink dogs, although I understand they are known for them. Last time we went one of the girls behind the bar was rude and pushy, rushing us. When there are only a few items to choose from on the menu there really isn’t a reason to rush people, they are going to figure it out. Anyways another girl helped us after she walked away and she was much kinder. Their ice cream is DELICIOUS, love the coffee flavor. Also they have glass Bottled cokes and other sodas which is fun :)

I love that everyone is all holier than thou about hot dogs of all things… they are hot dogs people! Regardless of color, they are all horrible for you no matter what kind you are buying so stop with the snobbery. You want a cheap and tasty hot dog with all the fixins? This is the place for you. This place helped on those extra broke days in college. Blame it on nostalgia, but I find them to be infinitely better than anything you’re gonna get at a gas station or any fast food spot. Cheerwine in a glass bottle to wash it all down, a delicious scoop of ice cream(the kid’s size is HUGE for the price), and you’ve completed the perfect Yum Yum experience. There’s a reason this place has stayed popping after all these years.

Stop in early Friday just for old times sake, grabbed a Hot Dog all the way, and a Cheerwine in a glass bottle. Dog was just ok, Cheerwine was great. Place is still great, full of memories, kinda calm and relaxing, especially with all the hustle and bustle going on outside, as the young people come back to school, a new generation of hot dog eaters.

Very old school ice cream/hot dog stand. Like 100 years plus old! So besides the old school vibe, it’s not a lot to write home about. The ice cream is very good and worth going for if nothing else! Probably 20 flavored to choose from at any given time. The hot dogs though, are not for me. They are the pink hot dogs that stain the buns! Now I know here in the south those are fighting words! I’m from here and just can’t get into that compared to a all beef dog. I mean what is it anyway! Nonetheless, try the ice cream and enjoy the history.

Yum-Yum has divided the City of Greensboro… you either love it or hate it. I myself like many other Unilocalers was introduced to Yum-Yum’s hot dogs and ice cream during my time at UNCG. The put off for a lot of people are the bright red hot dogs that they use. I have no problem with them. Are they the best tasting hot dog? Nope. The chili… it is a little on the bland side and yes, I have definitely had more flavorful hot dog chili in my life. However, the combination of that hot dog, slaw, chili, and mustard is a combination that I really enjoy. Try to put Yum-Yum’s chili or slaw in a contest and they would both lose horribly… but together for some reason they are a winning combination in my opinion. I usually order two all the way hot dogs. All the way = chili, slaw, onions, and mustard. At $ 1.80 each, that is hard to beat for a college student on a budget. I very much love that they sell glass bottle Cokes and Cheerwine. The nostalgia just makes you feel all warm and fuzzy. I don’t get to eat at Yum-Yum very often, but when I do it takes me back to the days of cramming for an exam while eating some good hot dogs. The ice cream is very good as well. Black cherry and pistachio were my favorites… although I didn’t see pistachio on the menu board on my most recent trip. I think the folks at Yum-Yum are super efficient and great at what they do. They keep the lines moving and pump out hot dogs with record speed.

My first time trying a red hot dog… I was slightly nervous but without good reason! It was so good, especially with the chili topping… mmm. Great cheap prices and be sure you try some of their ice cream. Mint chocolate chip was the bomb. Conveniently located on the UNCG campus. Do be prepared, they are cash only.

I have been coming here since I was younger than the kids are now. This is greensboro history. Hot dogs and ice cream and glass bottle sodas. Nothing else. But what they lack in variety they make up for in the old standards they still hold true to. Take the kids. Use it for a date. Closed on Mondays and only take cash so keep that in mind. Even that won’t let me give them anything less than 5 stars.

Gotta get the DOGSALLTHEWAY!!! Best pink Hot dogs $ can buy. Plus add on the hand dipped chocolate shake THICK! I have coming here is me 1980, and many of the same family members are still behind the counter 35 years later and everything is exactly the same(except the prices have gone up in 30 years) Everyone in Greensboro has at one time or another been a customer and you get all walks of like her from Drs to Lawyers to trucker drivers to students. Everyone loves the BETTERICECREAM!!!
