When Donewar’s closed, I was very sad. I had been going there for close to 15 years and absolutely loved the place. Their white beans, roast beef poor boy and hot sausage were among the best I have ever had. When I saw a new restaurant had opened in that location, I was very hopeful that it could fill the void created when my old favorite closed. A couple of co-workers went a few days ago and one told me that they had resumed the Thursday white bean and pork chop tradition. Imagine my surprise when I learned that was not true. My hopes were dashed, but I decided to give it a try anyway. The menu is not very large, but includes most BBQ standbys. The way the restaurant is designed means you order at the counter, grab a seat and your food is brought to you. I decided on a brisket poor boy and an order of fries. I had never done brisket on a poor boy, but their version was one of the best brisket sandwiches I have ever had. The brisket was thinly sliced with a great smoke taste. The table had two different types of BBQ sauce including the spicy variety that I tried. The sauce added a nice kick to the smokey meat. I really enjoyed my sandwich. If everything else is that good, I will definitely make this one of my regular lunch spots.

This is the old Donewar’s diner with a new owner. They still apparently serve up the daily specials such as red beans and pork chops on Mondays and white beans and pork chops on Thursdays, etc. This was my first time dining here since it morphed into a smokehouse BBQ establishment. It was pretty decent but nothing to really brag about. I initially ordered a brisket sandwich, but was advised that it was still on the smoker and would not be done for about an hour. It was a bit disappointing, but I got over it quickly. A buddy and I ordered our food and received it in less than 10 minutes. We both ordered pulled pork sandwiches on bun, but we both received pulled pork plates with no buns. The staff quickly remedied the situation and gave us what we ordered. I’ll overlook their mistakes with our orders this time and I’ll likely go back again to see if it becomes a trend. The bill was about twenty-four bucks for two pulled pork plates and two drinks. That seems about normal. I don’t yet know if I would recommend it to a friend. We’ll see how they do next time.
