This is one of the few places I know where you can get authentic Haitian food in ‘Nawlins. Period. Full stop. Formerly known as La Belle Fouchette, it is indeed a hole in the wall and if you drive too fast you might miss it, so slow down! I got the lambi with du riz blanc avec sauce pois and legume with riz cole and fried plantains. All were delicious and no one freaked out when I asked for the legumes without meat. We also got Cola Lacaye. :D I will definitely go back again.

Food was okay. Service was poor. My boyfriend and I walked in, wasn’t really greeted but just stared at. The younger lady was sitting by the register. An older lady sitting quietly on the side table just staring. I think this is a family business. The younger lady who took our order, I’m guessing is the daughter of the owner/cook. I really didn’t see much on the menu. There’s randomly scattered pictures on the walls, extra plates written on chalkboard or dry erase boards or on the door… So I asked what she would recommend. She said likes only the jerk chicken… such enthusiasm? Not. So we went with her recommendation for my boyfriend. I wanted some kind of curry dish and kept reading about an oxtail curry dish on Unilocal. When I requested that, she tells me it’s $ 18.99. Okay? That’s fine. I heard it was good. With your main dish, you can either have beans & rice or plantains as a side. My bf got the rice, I got the plantains. We both got an order of the cole slaw that was extra. Then, we waited… And waited… And waited… Heard someone call in an order and 20 min later, she arrives and her order was completed before ours. She had 4 to-go plates. Huh… A man walked in about 10 min after us and after waiting 25 – 30 min, he said he couldn’t wait any longer to the owner and said he would just come back another day. So 45 min after awkwardly placing our order, she brings out the food. We hurry and pay and go home. Disappointed already, we realize we paid 18.99 $ for oxtail curry when they gave us chicken curry. They put the plantains w my boyfriends order and the rice with mine. No problem Bc we shared anyways, but it could be quite an inconvenience otherwise. The chicken was dry and super small. The curry was just curry. Nothing special. Something I could make by rubbing curry powder on chicken and cooking it myself at home. $ 33 for this meal? 2 stars because the food wasn’t rancid or terrible. It was edible. The beans were very good though and I liked(just liked) the plantains. The coleslaw was very spicy!!! Kinda made it hard to enjoy the rest of the food. I tried to call to let them know they got my order wrong, but had no answer. Very disappointing. Won’t be going back.

I don’t write a lot of reviews, but this place is like a hidden gem in the Westbank. Fresh fried plantains not the blackened, soggy stuff you see at some other places. The flavors are very similar to crawfish seasoning just a touch of spice. It’s perfectly suited for the Cajun palate. The flavors take you back to the carribean. The place is clean, food is made to order, and the best part is the owner. She is fabulous & charming. Just disclaimer: I’m not in any way related to the owner and I usually don’t write 5 star reviews unless the place is exceptional. This place fits that bill.

In New Orleans(like the rest of Latin America) we value finding, eating at, and sharing ‘holes in the wall’. Taste of the Caribbean falls comfortably into this nook. Delicious food, warm and friendly service and a very clean establishment. First the food. I am Cuban, my wife is Jamaican, and our taste buds are right at home at TOC. Excellent jerk chicken with just the right amount of spice, served with some seriously succulent sauce. They serve a wonderful grilled chicken, with garlic or lemon sauce(they are both tasty and I recommend the lemon). I am drooling as i write these words. We asked whether they have beef patties, they served us patties that rivaled those in Jamaica and easily beat the ones we tried in Miami. My wife was served a fried redfish cooked to perfection with tostones(twice fried plantains) fried to an outside crunch and a great inside flavor. Then there is the coleslaw. I wanted a plate of it, more of it and even took some home. Being a coleslaw fan, I am particular about it– vinegar rather than mayo and a heat that makes one say ‘oh’ without being overpowering ToC read my mind, mixed it and served it up. As I said, it is a hole in the wall, a space in one of the most diverse strips I’ve seen anywhere. Bordered by a classic Louisiana Seafood place, a neighborhood bar, an elegant Indian restaurant, a massage center and a good ol’ Irish pub; Taste of the Caribbean portals you to a great food cottage/stand that dots our coasts from one corner of the Caribbean to the other. Finally, the name is true to the menu. This is really a taste of the Caribbean. Whether you like Haitian, Jamaican, Cuban or Puerto Rican food, the chef is tuned into what dishes are pan-Caribbean– which ones unite us. Rice and Peas, plantains(whether fried or mashed into mofongo/fufu), marinated beef and pork, tropical fruits and colas, turnovers(whether empanadas or patties), seafood and soups, form a microcosm of islands just off the coast and past the gulf. And ToC gives its patrons a wonderful culinary view.

Loved SABORDELCARIBE! This place is tucked away in the same shopping center as Saffron Nola, just off the corner of Belle Chasse Highway on Gretna Boulevard. It is owned by a delightful Haitian family and they serve a mix of caribbean fare with various daily specials. The restaurant is immaculate. It is cash only, but there is an ATM machine in the parking lot of the shopping center if you forget to bring some ahead of time. The menu is a highlight of traditional latin caribbean dishes. We had a chicken empanada, a codfish pastry(bacalao), shrimp mofongo, and a fried pork platter, along with an extra side of rice with black beans to split. Everything was delicious and freshly prepared. I was not disappointed with anything that we tried. My husband’s pork plate came with a spicy vinegary coleslaw which he loved and got a second portion of as lagniappe. He said that it was better than Rum House’s spicy cole slaw. I can’t wait to work my way through the rest of the menu at this little place.
