If you have not been to this place, then you do not know good BBQ. This is the best BBQ I have ever had in my life. I have been many places and lived many places but Southern Pit is where it is at. When I was in college about two hours away, I would drive just to come eat at Southern Pit. It truly is that good. It has been around for years ever since I was a child. It has plenty of room for parties and big groups. It is a very popular place to eat at so do not be surprised if you have to wait. It is worth the wait. The service is very fast and friendly. Their fries will have you talking about them for days. Affordable and very kid friendly. They have a train that goes around the restaurant that all the kids love. I remember when I was a kid watching it go round and round. Great place to go eat some«finger licking» BBQ. :)

The bbq sauce is very good and I love the atmosphere(rustic charm). If I can’t eat my dad’s bbq then this is the place to come. :)

I have been going here side the age of 13 and this is till my favorite by place! I always get the small rib plate. The ribs are always smoked to perfection and falls off bones. Love the fries that are made there and baked beans. I have also had Brunswick stew, cracklin corn bread and pulled pork. Unfortunately I can never make it to dessert!

Was in the area for the NASCAR race and this seemed like the best choice around. We had passed by early in the afternoon and the lot was quite full and on our return later it was much quieter. It’s a busy room, with a lot of staff around, both working and not. Knick-knacks of all types cover the walls. After being seated by a friendly girl, the first thing that stood out was no beer. Was both surprised and disappointed. I’m not from the area, so I don’t know if this is the norm, but I was fully expecting a cold beer with my BBQ. I had the full slab baby back platter, which came with cole slaw, beans and sliced bread. Food was served immediately after ordering. The ribs were on the dry side but tasty. The slaw was the finely chopped type, which I like, with a little bit of lemon to it. The beans were very good. Overall it was just ok, but the service was friendly and it’s an interesting place to eat.

Not as good as advertised. Had a lot better for less money. The pork ribs were dry and hard to chew. The pulled pork was just ok, nothing to refer a first time visitor.

Horrible customer service. Would never go back again. French fries undercooked or overcooked; never the right doneness. Cornbread cold and hard. Stew is blah. And the bbq is greasy or dry; rare to get it tasting good.

I’ve been to plenty of BBQ places around the country and now this one. This place is real close to where I always travel and I see the parking lot is alway full of cars. All these people can’t be wrong. I hada take out meal so me first impression was vvery good. The ladies behind the counter were very nice and full of information and recommendations. Being my first time here, I asked allot of questions. I ended up with the combo, chicken, ribs, pulled pork, beans and slaw. As I said, I’ve been to many places and this one was ok. Better than I can make but not the best I’ve ever had. Maybe it was an off day. Either way, would I recommend it and would I eat here again? Heck yea. The staff was awesome and the food was ok. Next time we will eat in and see what that experience is like.

Tucked away on N. Expressway is this gem of a BBQ restaurant. I’m not sure they need a recommendation, as the large parking lot was nearly full. The restaurant is large, and we were seated immediately. We loved our lunch. I got the beef and pork BBQ, with a side of stew and cole slaw, and a wedge of corn bread. My wife went for the pork BBQ plate. Portions are generous. Our waitress was friendly and attentive, and service was fast. What more is there?

It’s a BBQ joint. Ordered chopped pork sandwich and received chunks. Fries were good. Presentation was bad, sandwich all over the plate mixed in with my sides. Didn’t like that. Why order a sandwich when you can’t eat it like one.

Over-rated. Pork is always dry. Friendly staff and generous helpings but the food leaves much to be desired.

Ok BBQ, but nothing to write home about. The Brunswick stew is good and comes with some yummy cracklin cornbread, which I would recommend. Overall, good food for the price, but I wouldn’t go out of my way for it.

Killer pig! Best BBQ around. Sad to say I’ve never actually eaten inside; we always get takeout. Everything is fabulous… the cornbread, the sauce, the pork.

Took my nephew here to celebrate his graduation from kindergarten and the food was delicious. We both had ribs(he had the ribs from the kids menu. Yes, there was something other than grilled cheese and chicken strips on the kids menu). They were delicious. The ribs tasted like they just came off the grill. The sauce was excellent and the atmosphere was very welcoming. Keep up the good work.

This is a Southern BBQ restaurant, which means you get pulled pork, beef brisket, and ribs. Traditionally the ribs are flame grilled with a dry rub, they are not wet ribs. Both Pork and Beef are smoked and sauced, but served hot from the tray not pulled when ordered. The appeal of this place is pure comfort food in large quantities for decent prices. Your not going to see this place win any Master BBQ competitions but there are much worse and pricey options out there. It is somewhat remote being at the north end of Griffin, an at the back of a driveway on one side of a divided highway but is worth the drive for basic BBQ that is starting to disappear from the variety of food options we now have.

Ok, we went way out of the way to go to this place on a Saturday afternoon. This one of those places that was recommended to us from a friend of a friend that swears that this place is the best for BBQ. I should have known that the last review of the place was back in March and prior to that 2011. «Maybe People in Griffin don’t Unilocal that much I say to myself.» So since we’ve driven this far I figure I’d give it a shot. This place is like stepping back in time. Deer heads on the wall, Raccoons, beavers. All other types of knick knacks hanging on the wall including a train running across the celling. The service was excellent & patient [considering we didn’t know what we wanted & it took us a minute to order]. When we got our food I’ll have to say that everyone was satisfied with their meal but me. The best BBQ?, that’s saying a lot & those are some pretty big shoes to fill. The crackling corn bread? I’ve never had meat baked in my corn bread & would be totally fine to never have it again. All in all it wasn’t the best nor the worse BBQ I’ve had but I’d be hard pressed to drive this far again for this place.

Definitely have to try their cracklin’ cornbread. I can make a meal off of that and their slaw. I’m a southern boy who loves a good pig, but I seem to gravitate toward their beef sandwich. Pair it with a side of slaw and a piece of cornbread and you’re right where you want to be. Don’t forget the sweet tea. Friendly staff and unbelievably fast service once you get a seat. There can be a bit of a wait on Friday and Saturday evenings. Open for lunch and supper, Wednesday through Saturday.

Cons: The coleslaw. In their defense, however, I’ve never met a coleslaw that I liked, so I probably shouldn’t review it. Only opened Wednesday — Saturday… perfection takes time, people! Be prepared to wait a LONG time during peak hours(totally worth it IMO). Pros: This place is hands down the best friggin BBQ I’ve ever had(Shane’s who?) Warning for you city-folks: this is a local favorite and they are kuntry with a capital K. But they(the locals and the staff) are super friendly and you don’t want to leave. The tables/chairs/booths and dishware are reminiscent of my old high school cafeteria. Don’t expect any bells and whistles at this place(other than the ones on the train set that runs around the perimeter of the building). All over the walls is a collection of trucker hats that the patrons have contributed over the years. I swear I saw a «Nixon for President» hat hanging on the wall last time. Hilarious. To be honest, I always get the same thing: pulled pork plate with brunswick stew and whatever the dessert of the day is. So, I can’t really speak to the ribs, or beef. There is only one BBQ sauce for a reason — it is THAT good! The brunswick stew is killer(I always get a huge vat to take home). And I can’t forget to mention the fries — perfection. My dad, a usually generous lad, will fight you off with bear mase if you try to steal one of his Southern Pit fries! Oops…forgot to mention, Hubs(Mr. Finicky Eater) gives Southern Pit 5 stars, as well!
