This is my favorite sushi bar I’ve found. Friendly people, amazing food. The quality of the fish is always excellent, and I’ve referred many out of town friends and clients here. Several now make it a point to visit while in town. A place to relax, enjoy good food and good company.

I love it here! It’s a tiny restaurant but always has customers. The staff is very friendly and the food is delicious. Reasonably priced and well made, we’ve tried a little bit of everything, and always get a Grover Beach hand roll. It’s our new sushi spot :)

Everything is amazing! I rarely find a fresh sushi/Japanese bar that has a menu with such a large selection! Get there early tho, fills up super quick!

Seriously longtime no see, I’ve not been back in 14 years and this place has not changed at all. If you love rolls, this is the place to be. They have one of the freshest /nicest selections. Their nigiri is a steal deal, order of one comes with 2 pieces, extra long version too. The dragon roll(has eel one the top) and Bcd are my top favorites, paired w yellow tail and salmon nigiri.

Loved this place in college, and it’s still great more than a decade later. Service here has always been friendly, though occasionally slow. Food overall is good. Their sunomono is the quick pickle kind, and their rolls are a good size. Definitely a good local sushi joint to visit.

Fun place to hang out at with great service and yummy food. Service is really really really nice here. They do a lot to make sure The customer is satisfied. We had both rolls and sushi. Fish was in good proportion and the roles were great. I’m not really into saucy rolls and Yamato had a good variety for my choosing. Top it off with them sake and you are good to go

This place is great! We came here in a group of four and brought in a birthday cake to celebrate one’s birthday. It was a big surprise Yamato had a suuuuper awesome birthday blast — rhythmic music suddenly playing, everyone clapping, flashing lights on ceiling, a young lady bringing out the birthday cake with lighted candles and a big special frame to snap a photo, which will be stick onto the ceiling to be with hundreds of other photos. It was definitely a special birthday celebration in Yamato!

Solid three stars. Small place. Food very much like Shin’s was in San Luis. They have the best spicy tuna. Service is friendly, they offered me hot tea when I turned down the water(it tastes funny around here). I can see how it might get a little slow if it gets too busy and there’s only one sushi chef working. Not too bad, though. Overall a great place for a quiet lunch.

Steve, put your full menu online and get a website. Simply saying as your restaurant is our favorite between here and Los Angeles. Thank you

Yamato is the best I love going there I go at least once a week and a lot of people that I know go more often than that Steve is great to be around he has such an outgoing personality with you sit at the bar or you’re sitting at tables you really feel welcomed the food is great! Everything I have had is top shelf.

Yamato may not be the most authentic of sushi bars… but there is more to life than cynicism and hype. Yamato is THE place to get great tasting rolls, a decent plate of gyoza and a «Hite Special»(Large Korean beer and hot sake for $ 8). Reasonable prices, a welcoming atmosphere and a short wait(if any) make Yamato(and it’s sister-bar in SLO, Aisuru) the perfect choice for sushi on the central coast.

I didn’t have a good experience here. I order one roll to go and sat in front of them. There were literally 3 – 4 other people in the place. 20 minutes go by and the sushi chefs are lounging so i ask where it is. 15 minutes go by in which they make rolls for people who came in AFTER me. Finally get my roll its now 45 minutes later. I will question going back here.

Unfortunately I had to update my review with a heavy heart as this used to be our go to place when we were in town to see the folks as pops loves sushi as much as we do! This was as much their favorite place as ours but to our dismay it was so disappointing when we visited here this time. From the underage, inexperienced server, new menu, our food taking forever to get to us and we were their first customers of the evening to the stringy fish and old nasty tasting pickled ginger. Really this place was so much better and always was consistent with their food. I don’t know if we’ll be back it was so disappointing on so many levels that it’s almost a swing and a huge miss. We had stepped out and tried another joint last time in town and it was awesome. But we came back here out of knowing we always had a great meal now I think the other place will be our go to now.

Steve creates a fun friendly atmosphere with his long time no see greeting. The fish is fresh and he always has great specials on the board. Steve cuts large pieces of fish and I trust his suggestion of what is delicious and a must try. See you tomorrow at Yamatos.

I’ll give 4 stars because the food and prices are great. The place is pretty small though, so if you have a group of five or more, get there as early as possible because it does get crowded fast. Our party got lucky with seating since were rather early. We did have to wait on a roll for quite a long time. So long, actually, that everyone had finished eating and we were still waiting for one Blue Fin Tuna roll that I had to ask twice for. We sensed a sassy vibe from the waitresses, but they were accommodating anyway. Over all fresh fish, large Washington oysters and reasonable prices.

Love this place! I like the Backdraft Roll… Not too spicy and always delicious! My husband likes the rainbow rolls and the kids love the California rolls!

We love Steve & his crew! Solid sushi. Great prices. We start with hi lite special– Tall beer with Large Sake. Then, we always get 2 full tolls– I’ve tried almost all but the Rainbow Roll or Fireball are my go-to(especially if you’re new to sushi). Boyf likes the Cabo roll with the crispy onion straws. Avocado & California rolls are legit. Service is somewhat lackluster, not because of effort but every person is taking care of you– no «one person» serving you, which sometimes makes it chaotic and underwhelming.

Hey! Get the 1-hr massage w/reflexology next door first. Massage and then sushi? What a great way to spend a few hours!
