I hate to write this because I enjoy the convenience of the decent sushi to-go but I’ll take my business elsewhere after being accused of calling the wrong number for the wrong store(they have a couple stores in the San Luis Obispo area). First off, I apologize for calling the store in SLO thinking it was the one in 5 cities. I frequent both places because I work in SLO and I live in the Pismo area. After apologizing for calling the SLO store and picking up and paying for my order in Pismo, the person over the phone threatened in an extremely rude tone«You’ve done this multiple times calling the wrong store, you did it on Friday. Called the SLO store and picked up your order in Pismo…» If you’re going to accuse someone make sure YOULOOKATTHEELECTRONICRECEIPTWITHMYPAYMENT, &LOCATION on it to ensure that you are right(I have my email saved on their system so I receive all of them). I did call on Friday to the store in SLO and came to pick it up. Am I sure I went to the right one? Yes, because the girl with the short black hair had my order ready and below is the receipt with THELOCATIONONIT. So again, I apologize for calling the wrong store this time, my FIRST time ever doing so, however, make sure before you start yelling«we have your number on file for doing this multiple times…» that you check your OWNRECIPT that I’m sure you have on file with my number as well. So my first mistake will be my last. Thanks!

If you’re looking for the traditional sushi bar where you actually sit down at a table or bar then stay away from this place. Being really set on having sushi, when i first walked is really limited on choices of nigiri which really turned me off. The only reason why I came here is because it’s the only place open

The sushi here is very good. They have fun rolls like the Hawaiian Roll and the Texas Roll. The staff is very friendly. They have a reasonably priced teraakyi bowl for people(and kids) that do not like sushi.

Went there with my friends and kids. Service was nice and fast. Food quality was amazing. They let us rearrange the tables when we went since we had a group of 10.

I really like this place. Its nothin fancy but their fast and tasty. When i had a sushi craving around 3pm the other day and Yanagis and Yamatos were both closed until dinner time, I went here and it hit the spot. Staff were all friendly as well.

Food was fresh, however tasteless. Server was great, very clean. Will give them another try and maybe revisit this again!

One of our favorite places to eat whether we eat in or take out. I want to give a shout out to Richard who is by far the best employee I’ve had the pleasure of ordering from. His thoughtfulness, hard work ethics, organizational skills and great customer service is absolutely amazing.

Let’s just say I was not expecting the awesomeness that I received when I ordered food here! The chicken teriyaki bowl is excellent as is their sushi. For a fast food style restaurant, this place was great!

The seeThe service we received from Julie was excellent. The food was above average for your standard takeout Japanese restaurant. The only negative which I will provide is the sun was shining into the facility it needs blinds.

We had the tuna special roll with cream cheese & jalapeño. It was made with«CANTUNA» was it? I have been to a lot of sushi joints and this was the worst roll we have ever had. First and last time. Stay away.

Meets my expectation. I was expecting a two star like sushi and yep I was right. Got hungry and wanted something fast. Order the crazy roll. Which is a gigantic roll filled with everything. The spicy tuna can’t even tell is tuna. It’s just a bad combo.

The sushi is great. Love the rolls here. Shrimp teriyaki bowl… Disgusting! Here are the ingredients… 7 shrimp, cabbage, and white rice. That’s it! I couldn’t even eat it.

The restaurant has changed little since my 2011 review which is good. I am posting an update to my review simply to say, ignore the haters who are expecting too much. So many Unilocal reviewers are just ranting individuals who thrive on writing indignant posts to boost their own pathetic esteem. They’re the type who eat an McDonalds and try to compare the experience to a steak house. And stop being so racist! If you are looking for a serious and honest review, Sushi Kokku is not fine dining, but it’s good food at a reasonable price served by a friendly staff. As a local resident this is one of our favorite places in the area when eating on a budget. If you want to pay for a more authentic sushi restaurant, you have other more expensive options in the area.

Ate here for the first time today. The place looks really nice and clean, although it hardly looks like an oriental restaurant. The food is decent, but they definitely add too much water when cooking their rice — it’s very soft, and picking up sushi with chopsticks results in the roll falling apart half the time. If you’re on the go or want some casual dining, I’d say give it a try. They do get the food out pretty quick. But if you want a somewhat more authentic Japanese cuisine experience, I would look elsewhere.

For the price, this is pretty good sushi. I got the Washington roll and it was just right. Next time, I’ll do the«create your own roll» with salmon on top of a shrimp tempura roll so I’ll have all my favorite seafood in one dish. I ordered no sauce cuz I read Unilocal reviews saying it was bad. But both my hubby and son got rolls with the sauce which I tried. The sauce was actually good. It was an oriental ginger sesame mayo which enhanced the flavor pf fish. Service was unexpectedly good for a fastfood joint. We were all served miso soup while we waited for our rolls. Miso soup was very good too.

As stated on a review below, I was disappointed to see a Spanish lady preparing the meals. Making sushi is not some willy nilly thing to do. It takes practice and obviously based on how it was made, she didn’t have much practice. HOWEVER, my racist rant shouldn’t get in the way of how the food tasted… I let it get in the way. Lemme say that their food is WAYYYYYYAMERICANIZED. The soy sauce was bleh The rice was old. The seaweed didn’t even hold. Ugh disappointed but whatever I needed sushi fast and this was the place. The woman who helped us was decent but the man who worked on the left side was odd. Just kept staring at our table. It was weird.

2.5 stars. Sushi joints in strip malls can surprise and this one did: Persian rug on the floor, Japanese & Korean dishes on the menu, crystal chandelier above, classical music playing, Cartoon Network on the big screen with closed-captioning on. All it was missing was Hello Kitty. Don’t get me wrong, it wasn’t all that bad. The young woman at the counter was very friendly and answered my question about what bulgoki was(husband ended up ordering it). I had the combo teriyaki chicken bowl with tempura: steamed white rice with chicken pieces and veggies on top. The teriyaki sauce was blah and tasted like a bottled bargain brand, but the rice and veggies, mostly carrots and cabbage were outstanding. Unfortunately, the tempura batter, though not greasy, was thick and pretty much tasteless. I prefer a light and«lacey» tempura batter. The dipping sauce also seemed watered-down and didn’t add much flavor to the dish. I did love that I got three pieces of sweet potato(my fave tempura veggie), along with zucchini and two shrimps. Husband said the Korean bulgoki bowl was excellent; very little fat and lots of flavor. Along with a giant California roll, it really was a lot of food. The restaurant was very clean, the counter staff are friendly –even the other customers were friendly– but if you are absolutely are dying for sushi, this place will work in a pinch. Not knowing Pismo Beach very well –we were only there for the week– I’m sure there are better places. Still, I’d go back if I really needed a «fix.» Try it and let me know what you think.

This is an odd little venue. I can’t decide what to think of its décor. Odd ambiance. Chandelier. TV showing Nickelodeon. Neon lights outline on ceiling. Modern art on wall. Classical music. Anyways, don’t let the oddness put you off. While the décor is funky, the food’s actually not as bad as people have been saying. I especially point out the bulgogi on this. It was really good. Typically bulgogi comes with a fair amount of fat on it. This serving was nearly fat free, that’s a huge score in my book. California roll cuts were a bit larger than usual but still good. Overall I was impressed with the portions given. If you can get past the odd décor here, the food should be right up the alley for anyone looking for decent to good Japanese style food.

I really can’t stand the notion of «fast food sushi.» It’s a frackin’ oxymoron! At least the fish wasn’t conspicuously old. So there’s that… Too bad it’s sliced paper thin. Those cheapskate bastards should be charging a fraction of the price for what they offer. Their policy is that EVERYROLL comes with avocado. I was like, I just want a tuna roll! They got confused. And they drench every roll w/some kind of mayo/sesame gravy. It’s lipstick on the proverbial pig to cover up the lack of actual fish. There’s an excellent sushi joint right across the freeway from them. How do these people get away w/their low quality/high price model? I noticed in the reviews that people who liked the place were talking about the teriyaki bowls. Fine, but it’s hard to go wrong with that. Also, they inflict bad art on your poor retinas. You just know that crap was painted by the«never-worked-in-a-Japanese-restaurant-before» owner. It’s insult to injury.
