Sorry, instead of Haleiwa Supermarket. It should read Foodland.

LOVED the grilling in the parking lot of the Haleiwa Supermarket. The Kalbi & Chicken plates were to die for. Freshly grilled for my eating pleasure, we came 3 days out of our 7 day stay, and wished we could have eaten there 7 days. Traveling from Waikiki to Haleiwa was a bit of a pain, but the delicious food was YUMMY! The rice was good, although the canned corn and the crappy salad I could do without, we thoroughly enjoyed our plate lunches.

When you’ve just been told that you may become a housewife sooner rather than later(relax people it’s NOT like tomorrow or anything LOL) some people freak out and run screaming to parts unknown. Then there’s me. I get excited, take the keys to the SUV, go get my brows waxed at a salon and grocery shop happily to «practice». We didn’t NEED a damn thing from the supermarket. But I LOOOOVE grocery shopping in different and new parts of the world. It’s like a field trip for me and I delight in all the weird and exotic foods that are revelations to my comprehension and tastebuds. And so I find myself at Haleiwa Supermarket. Telling my younger brother that I’m spending Christmas meeting my new boyfriend’s family for the first time and enduring his good natured and happy for me ribbing. Buying pork chops(center cut natch) 4 for less than $ 6, papaya(WOOOT!) at 89 cents each, albacore tuna in water at 79 cents a can, Li Ming Mango(these taste like WD-40 smells… trust me, natives backed me up on this one), and a few other sundry items. $ 50 later I am driving the SUV home(HOME!!!) to my boyfriend/lifemate/partner/love-of-my-life and fantasizing about this being my weekly routine. I am totally gonna work this Martha Stewart shit.

A mom and pop store that stocks all kinds of island delights! This is a great stop to load up the picnic basket on the way to Waimea. They have pre-marinated teriaki beef that is sliced super thin. It is the best on the island and perfect for a beach side BBQ. They also stock plenty of local sourced produce, breads and who can pass up the hot malasadas! IGA has a great selection of greens and papaya dressing from the near by Pupukea gardens! Forget Safeway, support your local IGA!

3.5 Stars. The market is kinda run down. It reminds me of a super market that changed to a discount market. Maybe it was the lighting or the way the shelves were stocked… it didn’t look bright or inviting. The aisles were spaced out, making it look like there wasn’t a lot of food stocked. 2.5-stars for the market. An extra star for the BBQ/Malasada lady situated in front of the store. She makes the malasadas fresh as you wait. They came out looking like beignets, but that didn’t matter. Nothing like a warm malasada dusted with sugar… ok, well, Krispy Kreme wasn’t around, so this will do.
