Okay, I’m technically not supposed to eat ice cream. I can’t have dairy or sugar. I can eat cold stuff(as long as I don’t bite it), so two out of three’s not bad. So, when I do eat ice cream(shhhhh.), it has to be worth the inevitable discomfort. Smiley’s is really good ice cream. Homemade taste and texture, rich, dense and creamy. I had peanut butter this time, which had a deep peanut butter flavor, topped with delicious hot fudge, not too sweet, but gooey and thick. Couple that with friendly service and plenty of seating(including umbrellas to shade from the sun), and it makes it way worth it. I’ll be back. Just don’t tell my doc.

Located in downtown Hallowell along the rail trail, the thought of an old-fashioned ice cream sounded good after pedaling 10 miles. I ordered the baby size, which was actually good sized. I got the blueberry cheesecake, which tasted like sour milk and freezer burn. Not old fashioned – just old. After a couple of bites, I tossed it in the trash.
