UPDATE: Same great food one year later! We drove almost an hour from our beach rental to eat here again. The hush puppies, local caught shrimp, oysters, catfish bites, okra, and potatoes were excellent. Wish we had one in the Raleigh area. The fried food is not greasy at all here. Well done!

A local gift shop owner recommended this place to us, she said it is her favorite restaurant in town. Interior was quaint and clean with plenty of room between tables. Great service, staff was friendly and attentive. Food was excellent for the price. Every item came out hot and fresh. Definitely would eat here again.

Great, fresh local seafood and fare. Friendly service too. Everything homemade. Casual. Good for kids, too and the hush puppies are amazing(and this is coming from someone who does not prefer fried food!)!!

Need to post operating hours/days. Been twice, closed both times. 4 hotdogs = $ 20.00. Hope seafood is better value.

Delicious! Simple, Southern menu offering American and seafood options. We enjoyed the hush puppies, flounder, collards and shrimp. Good prices, and casual atmosphere. Staff was very friendly. Great stop if you’re looking for a bite to eat on Harkers Island.

Great place for lunch. They’ve revamped everything inside and it’s cute as a button. I had the shrimp lunch plate and it was done just right, LOCAL shrimp breaded lightly and fried to perfection. The hushpuppies are the real deal and delicious, too! Reasonably priced and wonderful service brought me down east two weekends in a row, once with a friend and once with my husband. A real treat, we’ll definitely be back again sometime soon!

Ate there on 11/14/2015: crab cakes, fried okra, mash potatoes and hush puppies. Crab cakes were tremendous — some of the best I’ve ever had. But the sides were extraordinary as well: real mashed potatoes and fresh fried okra like my mom used to make right out of the garden. The hushpuppies were so good I had to try not to eat so many to leave room for the real meal(!). They also had several quality non-Anheuser-Busch beers on tap(forgot the brewery, but I had a very nice amber ale). Service was extraordinary as well — and our waitress had an authentic Harkers Island accent(it’s disappearing quickly) to boot. One of the owners(Ms. Heather?) came out to chat with us – friendly and eager to please customers. I highly recommend the place and I’d suggest including it in to a day trip to Harkers Island(short drive from Beaufort, Morehead City and the Crystal Coast area). If I had any suggestions, it would be to use real glass for the beer(vs. plastic cups), and real plates and utensils(not plastic). The quality of this food deserves it! But I’d guess residents of Harkers are also trying to cut down on water consumption, and that concern likely factored into these decisions. I’d also encourage the owners to highlight their Harkers Island heritage with historical photos and memorabilia. Harkers Island is cultural treasure and hopefully more of us Piedmont residents will continue to discover it.

We departed New Bern in time to have lunch on Harker’s Island before catching our ferry to Cape Lookout. We debated between Fishhook and Captain’s Choice across the road but selected Fishhook because of its more homey appearance. Captain’s Choice just appeared more touristy. Fishhook, we found, was a nice, small family run place. In fact it appeared that Dad and Mom were in the kitchen cooking and Son was the server. He was a nice boy, very polite and did a good job. Andrew and I started with some Hatteras style clam chowder. I doubted if Andrew had ever had this style of chowder before. In fact although I have, it was a little different from what I have had. It was undoubtedly homemade and was very simple, with a briny broth and tons of clams. I commented that this would be a really good bowl to have on a raw winter day. Ms T and Aunt Annie had a fried shrimp plate and Andrew had a softshell crab sandwich. I thought all of it was quite good. The shrimp were almost uncoated. Ms T did not feel they had much flavor, but I found them very good. They reminded me of shrimp we had as kids. I got a bite of the softshell crab which was prepared similarly and was also good, but the crab is so mild it gets a little lost on the sandwich. This is not a fault of the preparation, just the fact with fresh softshell. I bucked the trend and had a chili dog with their homemade chili sauce. The chili was simply browned chili-seasoned ground beef not really sauce. The dog was buried in this meat and I really liked it. The chili had a good flavor with a little spice. It was somewhat like the dogs I get at The Chilli Parlor in Springfield, IL. It is similar in style, but better flavored. We had a nice lunch. It is a humble, local place where you feel like you are eating home cooking.

Great seafood and sides. If you aren’t in the mood for seafood, I would recommend the grilled chicken plate. Tasty! Excellent service. Always eat here when I’m in town.

My husband and I are visiting Harkers Island for our anniversary, decided to try Fish Hook since it had lots of good reviews, it did not disappoint. We started with the catfish bites for appetizer and they were meaty and crispy and were served with this wasabi cucumber sauce that was really good! I had the flounder(fish of the day) and blackened shrimp. The flounder was meaty and delicious! Lightly breaded so it wasn’t just breading! The blackened shrimp was fantastic! Got a little kick, but the seasoning was super good. My husband got the fried oysters, which he described as «melt in your mouth.» Staff was friendly. Was a little pricey, not what we expected for price, however the food was really good so it was ok! Disappointed that when we got there at a little after 6pm they were already out of baked potatoes. Would definitely go back if we are at Harkers Island again!

We were looking for a quick bite to eat before we hit the Ferry. We are glad we stopped in to this local place. We had the clam chowder which was really good. It was made with potatoes and clams. It was salty and it was good. We tried the crab cake appetizer that was fried like a mini pancake. It was ok. For our meals the kids had burgers which looked good with hot fries. We had the clam stops were good too. Finally, I had the fresh fish wrap. It was delicious! We were really happy we tried this place before we went on the Ferry! Place was clean and nicely decorated.

We have had a place at Harker’s Island for years and have visited Fish Hook many times. Heather has done an awesome job. We usually drive to Beaufort for dinner and drinks but now we don’t have to. We had a few drinks at the bar and I have had the philly cheese steak and shrimp/oyster plates– all were excellent. It’s so nice inside, would definitely recommend.

While on vacation in NC, I was extremely lucky to be taken to this amazing restaurant by friends. I ordered the shrimp burger(which was delicious), and a friend who is a NC native said the bbq was one of the best he had ever tasted. Their hush puppies are also worth mentioning, and there are some good local beers on draft along with a decent wine list. The food was not the best part of the experience, though. The server(who I believe may have also been the owner) was funny and personable, and she even brought us out some of their unique clam chowder to try when we asked about it. I cannot overstate how welcome and comfortable we felt and how pleased we were with the service!

The Fish Hook Grill is a wonderful little spot on Harkers Island with wonderful food. The hushpuppies are the bomb! Personally I think the burger taste like I grilled it myself. Everything I have had, from fried shrimp to crab cakes to seafood burgers and beef burgers, has been top notch. I’ve had nothing bad. I love the new décor and although I miss Miss Faye, the new owner has been very gracious and accommodating. I hope this place last as long as it did under Miss Faye. Yummy! I eat here at least once a week.

Tucked away and off the beaten path, this is a little gem. The owners have done a great job with renovating the place to create a totally different ambience than the previous iteration. Having eaten here twice I can say the food is top notch. Last night the Blackened Scallops were great, plump, lightly cooked and just enough spice. The sweet potato fries were brilliant, crisp and perfectly cooked. Well worth getting to know and I’ll be back, a lot.

Small town, local people working in the joint, ONE waitress for 10 tables. I don’t know how she did it.(the waitress) Sweet sweet local lady waiting on the hungry church crowd that all seemed to show up all at the same time. I just wish there was a sign that said«please seat yourself» so that way us newbies/non-local folk aren’t standing there like idiots blocking the entrance. The food was good and the prices were good as well. I had a cheese burger… WITH… COLESLAW?!? Is that cole slaw??? LOL! I forget I’m in the south. Still tasty(after scraping the cole slaw off) and it was only $ 5.95. It comes with chips but they ran out so they upgraded our side with french fries! score! Service is slow, but she again was really nice and was doing the best she could. Give this place a whirl when you’re Down East!
