This little place is only open from Thursday to Sunday from about 7am to noon in the summer season. They only serve breakfast, which is only eggs, omelets. Joyce, the owner, cook and waitress, also makes homemade muffins which have achieved some sort of prize status. There is a good assortment of these. However, Joyce is definitely a character… she has a LOUD voice, something like a foghorn, and she talks to everyone in the place… no secrets here! Don’t come here super-hungry because it takes forever for the food to show up in front of you. The eggs are really good, but the potatoes which come with the meal are, well, interesting. They are billed as «home fries», but they are actually tiny little cubes(about 7) arranged too neatly across the plate… OCD style. I have to admit this made me laugh… They are ok tasting, but not very numerous. You’d think a place like Maine could afford to put more potatoes on the plate. The locals come in and read newspapers which are available to peruse for free, and they somehow speak English in a way I found hard to understand… Definitely a place for local color and unusual characters. Just have your first cup of coffee BEFORE you go there, because Joyce’s voice will get to you otherwise.

A friend and I try to visit Harmony, ME every year. It’s such a lovely town and the folks are really welcoming. The Breakfast Nook is the only real restaurant around. The locals hang out here and shoot the breeze. Everyone knows each other, and Joyce, the owner, chef, baker,(and candlestick maker?) knows them all, too. Joyce is originally from Rhode Island, but she’s a local girl now – and she’s pretty much a one woman show. She cooks a great omelette, and she makes some pretty good pastry, too. she’ll fill your coffee cup over and over, which is great. The wait for your food and eating it takes about 2 hours – but no one is in any kind of rush. There are local papers and some good old magazines to read if you’re not in a gabbin’ kind of mood. You can park right outside the Nook. No parking meters here! Enjoy.
