The food is ok and some of the beers are too. The service is hit or miss. On one ocassion, I went with some friends on a Sunday because they advertised NFL Sunday ticket on a sign outside and I wanted to see a game. None of the TV’s were playing football and when I asked them to turn the channel to a game, I was given grief because they said they usually keep the volume muted on the TV’s and play music on the speakers instead. It took 10 minuted for them to find someone who knew how to change the channel and find the game. On another occasion our waitress was very friendly and attentive.

Their on-site brewed beer is really great. Probably one of the better Scotch Ales I’ve had in a long time. I’m also a big fan of their Pales. I’ve had a fair amount off of their menu, but the one thing that they used to have was this turkey sandwich with avocado and it was on this bread that was fantastic. They don’t have it anymore. Bummer. That said, the best thing on their menu is by far their Mac-N-Cheese appetizer. Smoked gouda, pancetta, and a cayenne panko topping… you can’t go wrong with it. I promise. I highly recommend this place during the summer time as an evening/night hang out on the roof top.

BEER! Delicious, unique, and bottomless beer! Cally’s is a brewery, so of course the main attraction on their menu is going to be their great selection of brews. My favorite by far is the Smokin’ Scottish. The food is also pretty good and they have some unique items on the menu like an enormous pretzel with spicy mustard imported from Russia. The place could be a little bigger as it does get pretty busy on the weekends, especially on Thursday nights when all pints of beer are only $ 1.75! Yeah…I know where I’ll be Thursday night.

I’ve only had the beer, but the rye pale ale and the other, German-named pale ale was good stuff.

I stopped here on my way down to the beach for lunch. The place was nice inside. They have an upstairs area and I believe a deck area adjacent to it, but I didn’t head upstairs. Needless to say, lots of space. The bartender was nice and allowed me to sample a few of the beers. All 3 that I had were very good. The pale ale was my favorite. very hoppy, close to an IPA. The food was solid and not overpriced. I would stop back here again for sure if I was passing through. Great experience.

Have been here many times while hiking in nearby Shenandoah National Park. There is a reason why I keep coming back :) Beer is really good and you cant beat the prices on the pitchers especially on Sundays when they are ½ price. Remember having a Kolsch and Pale. Really good stuff. The appetizers at ½ price are a good bargain. However, remember the appetizers being better when they were called Calhouns. They no longer had the chicken peanut satay on skewers. Would definitely come here again when in the area.

We stopped here on our way through Virginia. It ended up being a great pick. The food was nothing too special but good. The beers were very good, and they had a nice variety. The bartender and hostess that we interacted with were friendly and helpful. It seemed like a chill place, with a nice relaxed atmosphere. We would definitely hit this brewpub again if we were in the area.

We went for happy hour and sat on the rooftop which was great. There was a nice range of beer choices. Our favorite was the local Amber. We only ordered appetizers — the chicken quesadilla and baked bruschetta. The quesadilla was fresh, flavorful, and good sized. The bruschetta was great — the bread had a slightly sweet flavor and was cooked to be a bit soft inside and crispy on the edges. I really enjoyed it – much better than a mega-chain.

For a microbrewery, this place is on the square and sporty side. I’d compare the food to mega-chain restaurants like Chili’s or Applebees, but a bit more expensive. Needless to say, a letdown on the foodie front. As for the beer, I was happy to see a wide variety of brews, including seasonal ales. A 50% success rate: The Cally’s Kolsch, a light lager-style beer truly tasted like watered down Bud. On the upside, the Smokin’ Scottish was notably complex and interesting. The crown jewel in this pub’s cap is certainly the bourbon menu, whose galssy-eyed rhapsodizing produced the following description of JIMBEAN: «vanilla, delicate floral notes, oak and soft malt flavors» Delicate floral notes? Soft flavor? Jim Bean? Really?

The food is good for your standard microbrew, but the beers are what makes this place. Harrisonburg was just an overnight stop on a long roadtrip and Cally’s provided a good meal at the end of a long day of driving and beers that were absolutely perfect. The casual atmosphere was good for our kids and they introduced my 4-year-old to the Shirley Temple, she’s now hooked.

Virginia, you rock! We ended up in Harrisonburg by complete chance. Up until two days ago I had never heard of it. As with any new place, I always check for breweries and Cally’s came up. We didn’t go into it expecting too much but had a good time. The beer was tasty(although they didn’t offer a porter or stout… very odd) and the service was good. If you’re looking for a brewery that also serves inventive, fusion foods this isn’t it, but the food is a hell of a lot better than most small town bars.

TRYTHEHOMEMADEROOTBEER! Nice, fresh food with great ingredients(and a good descriptive menu) — local beers to remember. Absolutely love their zippy bruschetta appetizer — marinated tomatoes really make it pop, and it’s plenty large enough to share. Good service, too. Some dinners range into the 20s, but their selection of sandwiches and salads is less expensive(many around $ 9) and very tasty.

Cally’s has an awesome outside deck upstairs where you can enjoy the weather, but that’s about all you’ll enjoy. I went for brunch and the service was great, but the food was just okay. Maybe I need to try it a as the«burger and beer» joint that people have noted so far.

Food is just above par American salads, burgers, sandwiches, etc. I highly recommend happy hour(4:30−6:30 M-F) where pints are $ 1 off and appetizers are half price. Beer is very good, especially the darker selections(Porters, Stouts, etc). A locally owned business worth supporting.

The beer is the reason to head to Cally’s. It’s a «burger and beer joint», and the house brews are worth the visit. The food won’t knock your socks off but i haven’t been disappointed. The service has always been good. A relaxed vibe, nothing pretentious, very accommodating.

I only had one beer at the bar. I had an Oktoberfest brew and my dad had a hefeweizen. I thought both of the beers tasted sweet. The crowd seemed a bit older. 40 something couples and groups of friends in their late 20s and 30s. The menu looked like standard American fare.

Restaurant /Brewhouse. Apparently there are still a few of these Brewhouse places out there– I had thought that they were mostly gone by now. Having driven into Harrisonburg and having no idea where to get a bite to eat, we were given a list of restaurants to pick from over at the visitor center. The décor is nice– but it seems that the space is wasted– it is huge but there is so much open area that you have to wonder how they turn a profit. The servers are excellent– very quick and efficient. The home grown beers are adequate but nothing to jump up and down about– in fact Sam Adam’s has them beat on most of the styles. The food was good if heavily sauced — everything seems to be in some sauce or another. Tasty but I can’t imagine what the calorie count is on those dishes. The portions were large and surprisingly the waitress didn’t even ask if we wanted dessert — maybe she saw we were ready for a nap… Parking is on the street.

Based on a recommendation from the visitor’s center we dined on the rooftop of this place. I ordered their cobb salad with grilled chicken and avocado viniagrette. Very yummy. My husband ordered the fish tacos and enjoyed his dish. He also ordered a sampler of their brews but wasn’t much impressed, he thought the Trader Joe’s ales tasted better. I ordered the Hawaiian Blue which was too sweet, I think they forgot to add the pineapple juice to give it a tart kick. Overall we thought the food was decent and it was cool to dine on the rooftop. Our waitress was fairly attentive and we got great service.

Our experience with this place was extremely slow service and possibly the worst pasta(the Tuscan Chicken Pasta) dish I’ve ever had in a restaurant. Seriously, I think it ranks with a PastaRoni that’s been overcooked. And it was $ 15 — not cheap exactly, especially in a smaller city in Virginia. It was a Friday night and the place was packed, although mostly it seemed that people were drinking, not eating. Smart choice. The beer was pretty good, but even standard pub grub like a burger was cooked to almost well done, instead of the medium rare that was requested. It was nice to sit out on the rooftop deck… and that’s about it.
