Reservoir #6 is my favorite of the reservoir trails in West Hartford. It’s a mixed surface trail(gravel, dirt, some pavement) that loops around reservoir #6. The main trail loop is about 3.6 miles and is popular among walkers, runners, and dog owners(no bikes in this trail). There are fantastic views of the reservoir, the tree, hills/mountains, and even the hartford skyline at one point. It’s busy but not overly crowded compared to the other reservoir area. People are generally friendly and respectful. Most seem to do the main trail loop, however there are 2 – 3 paths off the main trail that you could explore if you’re feeling adventurous. As I mentioned in my tip, one actually leads you up to the Heublein tower which is pretty cool(and allows you to enjoy that fantastic view without the chaos of the normal heublein tower hiking trail!) There are two parking areas, the main one right off the road and a second one(the first can fill up) that you can access by driving through the first lot and bearing right to follow the road along to the water treatment center where additional parking is available. There is also a port o potty and trash receptacle in each parking lot. No water here so plan to bring your own. Great place to take in some views and get a little exercise at the same time!

Great place for a relaxed, easy, pretty much level walk to chase the winter doldrums away. The east side is more open and breezy, while the west side runs closer to the traprock ridge with the path thru the woods, though still with water views for the most part. The whole route around is under 4 miles so plan on an hour or so at a comfortable pace. Connections to the trail going up to Heublein Tower run off the west side for those with more time and who want to break more of a sweat.

This is a great spot for a job or a hike. You can make your way around the reservoir(maybe 3.5 miles?) or head up to Heublein Tower — a really wonderful walk/hike.

My fiancé and I wanted to go for a walk this weekend while the weather was so wonderful and figured one of the reservoirs would be the best place. We were headed to Avon later so we decided on Reservoir 6. There was still a lot of snow around the train on around the reservoir so we decided on the main road and did an out and back. If Carlos and I had snow shoes we would’ve been more adventurous. Don’t let the first parking lot of 44 fool you… keep driving and take a left when the road T’s. Up the little hill there is another public parking lot.
