Forty North is a restaurant leased and managed by cook and manager all rolled into one, who clearly does not know how to run a restaurant. He runs a restaurant like a chicken without a head. Trying to be manager, chef, maybe waiter as well never had a chance to see further. Had reservations with dear friend who is in remission of breast cancer at Forty North-Hastings on Hudson on Saturday, June 18, reservations were taken around noon, then I called again to reconfirm our reservation for party of 3 at 6:30, was told by Hostess no problem about dining on the deck and if too hot we would have a short wait but would be seated inside restaurant. Arrived at 6:30, to large boxes outside entry door to restaurant with young girls from party sitting on the boxes, table, saying that there was a big party in the restaurant. We were shocked so I figured let me go into the restaurant and speak with front desk, well barely could open the entry door and get into restaurant. Entry way in and around front door was blocked with crowds of young kids and adults dancing, drinking, forced my way in and found no Hostess, no waiter in sight with any identification to pick out of the crowd. Went to Bar older woman as bartender seemed totally mummified, just keep making drinks and serving any and all. Told me the chef, manager was in the kitchen. On my way in found 1 waiter coming out, and kitchen was a total mess seeing only 1 person, the manager, chef doing it all. Kitchen looked like a mess, over stored with god knows what . If this is a place you think my hard earned dollar is going to get, think again. This restaurant is cutting costs and manager, chef doing it all, a 1 ring circus. Having worked in an upscale restaurant in NYC for 12 years, and have been in many restaurant kitchens, this place was a shock beyond shock. The dining experience is totally lost here. Would highly not recommend. Owner needs to separate himself from being management and chef, your either chef or manager. Get staff, follow Fire guidelines, Front door to and out of restaurant needs to be totally unblocked, you need staff in a restaurant to be properly trained. Not sure about the quality of food being served, as this was only a 15 minute observation, I would hate to imagine.

Family run, fantastic food and service. Amazing view and quality seafood. A hidden gem and must try! They’ve expanded their outdoor deck to multiple levels and it gives surrounding restaurants on the water real competition. Can’t wait to go back!

I ate here last night with several members of my family. The scenery was awesome looking out onto the Hudson River and the food was exceptional. The staff was friendly and very attentive to our needs. The bar area is very cozy. Overall it was a very good experience and with the summer upon us, I would definitely recommend this place for dinner; indoors or out!

This place needs a manager. It has terrible service and is so disorganized. Food choices are vague. When I asked for the Bok Choy salad, they ran out. Then I asked for the clams and they also ran out! I mean how can someone run out of so many things? Its just not acceptable. I am not returning. If this business doe not get a manager, it will run out of business. Food is overpriced for what they offer.

Had Mother’s Day Brunch here and wish I had gone some where else. The brunch was as basic as could be. The food was cold. The staff was friendly but inexperienced. We had to pile up our plates at times. I wouldn’t go back to eat but I might go back for a drink because the view is really nice. Red Hat need not worry.

Walked in and was wowed with the view. Had high hopes. Where should I begin. Mother’s Day brunch was a very strange small offering of food. Rather than«merchandising» the breakfast offerings together eggs were jammed between pork and rice. They had lox and the fixings but no bagels or cream cheese. I was told to take the bread from next to the salad(and the salad dressing was in a squirt bottle!). Pasta was bland. Food was overall Mediocre if best. $ 200 for 5. Oh and instead of clearing tables someone would come out to each table with a big grey busing bin and threw stuff in. Worse noise than a busy diner. «Owner» seemed lovely. Should have been dressed with a button down shirt to work the main room instead of a washed out messy polo. My husband worked hard to find a waterfront location so I felt bad for him.

Nice view but lunch menu is nothing special. Hardly any choices. We got some BBQ wings and they were smothered with BBQ sauce. Complete mess and not tasty

We just ate dinner here last night — it was my husband, my three young daughters and me. We were seated immediately and the owner/chef came right out to introduce himself. He let us know that although they don’t have a separate children’s menu he would be happy to prepare anything the girls wanted. We ordered wings for an appetizer, which were delicious. For dinner my husband had a hamburger which was well prepared and a good size. One of my daughters had wings, another had a burger, and the middle one(with the champagne taste) had a petite filet mignon. The girls each ate their entire meals which is unusual. I had the cajun salmon served on a bed of wilted spinach along with roasted potatoes. The meal was delicious — flavorful but not too spicy. Each of the meals was served hot and came out at the same time. The best part of the meal was the setting, though. We sat right by the window and watched a storm roll down the Hudson and then clear out. It was beautiful! After dinner the owner insisted we try his homemade key lime pie, which was fabulous, and he brought out a bowl of zeppole for the girls. We weren’t rushed out the door– they encouraged us to stay as long as we wanted! My only suggestion is that as the weather gets warmer I hope the owner will expand his menu a little bit to include some less pricey items(like buckets of clams, mussels, chicken sandwiches, etc). and maybe some good frozen drinks!

We walked in this restaurant and fell in love with it. Our first course was fantastic and we couldn’t understand why it wasn’t packed. Then we slowly realized the management was nuts. The manager/hostess actually told another table to move because her family was coming in later and needed the table. Then she rushed us out. Just a strange place…

I had my wife’s 50th birthday party last September at Forty North. We contracted the event through the previous restaurant team in May after I read a very good review of the restaurant/Chef in the NY Times. I then learned in September that the Chef resigned way back on May 12th and that they were replaced by a local family restaurant team. I was not informed of this important change until 2 weeks before the party when I was invited in to discuss last minute preparations– none of the team of course looked familiar so I reached out to the tennis operation owners(the restaurant is part of a tennis facility). There was no communication from the tennis management team regarding the change in the service team and more importantly the acclaimed chef. I did a tasting(of which I was charged which is unheard of ?) Yet that tasting then became irrelevant when there was total turnover in the kitchen. The new management team was consistently defensive when I expressed my dissatisfaction about being kept in the dark until two weeks before my event. Then they became offended with me. There were other issues regarding what was mentioned and promised for dessert and what was actually served. I also questioned the separate bar bill which included over 200 additional bar drinks as there appeared to be no counting system in place. When my wife went to supplement the decoration of the room with flowers on the day of her party the Forty North Chef cursed at her and said«they didn’t even want to do her f___ing party.» She was startled and shocked as we had several guests coming from out of state. Can you imagine that? My gut told me that I wanted to work with a professional restaurant team– both in the kitchen and on the service side– and not a local family operation. While the food and the dinner service was fine there was constant hostility in the air… I can honestly say that I have never had a poorer customer service experience in my life. I feel I was treated poorly and eventually I was even lied to. 2 stars is being very kind…

Finally got a chance to write this review. My girlfriend and I decided to go on an adventure out of the city about a month ago. We chose Hastings on the Hudson and found this little gem. It’s only 40min on the Hudson Line off Grand Central $ 17 round trip for 2ppl(amazing) This is a family run business. Our waiter is the eldest son I believe. We were greeted at the bar by the mom and she makes a fantastic martini and let us sit anywhere we wanted. We chose the outside because as you know… it’s been a mild winter in the NYC this year. We took in the fall foliage and during the few hours we spent there taking in the view from the water and pretty much the wildlife. Basically the ducks got replace by the geese when the sun started to go down. BTW, you would have to pay big bucks in Walt Disney World at Animal Kingdom lodge to get this effect. This was free. Speaking about generosity. The owner and also kitchen chef was amazing. He came out and talked to us about the ingredients in our dishes. He also makes fresh mozzarella in house. The caprese salad was out of this world. It’s all about the fresh mozzarella, good olive oil and garlic… OMG. It’s a must have. We also tried the mussels in garlic white wine sauce. These green lip mussels were so meaty that we didn’t have room to order main courses. The owner only gets fresh ingredients. So originally, this dish was supposed to be clams but his seafood purveyor did not have good clams. Now that’s quality control. The family made us feel just like home. After dinner we finished out with cocktails and drinks at the bar. Let’s just say the owner was very generous and we left to get back on the train feeling real nice! Of course, he made sure we weren’t driving. Lovely family, beautiful restaurant and views. We will be back for sure. So if you want to escape from the city but don’t want to go too far up the Hudson then… this is the place for you. Don’t worry. You can still see the city from the distance down the river.

Just attended a private event at this amazing cocktail and dinner venue, What a special place! The view is simply amazing and the food and ambiance is just incredible! You feel like your own private chef is serving you in your own home, if your own home happened to have primo waterfront on the Hudson River. Planning a dinner with friends here soon as well as a private event for clients. The setting is perfect for year round… the deck has ample seating for warm weather yet inside, the bar has a cozy fireplace with big leather chairs for a ski lodge feel in winter. My former Hudson River favorite, Red Hat Bistro, now has some serious competition with the arrival of Forty North.

My sister-in-law and I had our niece’s bridal shower here and we couldn’t have been more pleased. The food was fabulous, the space was beautifully arranged, the view was amazing, and the chef could not have been any nicer or more accommodating. Guests told us it was one of the nicest showers they had ever been to. A fantastic venue to host a party.

I am LOVING the bad reviews on here because it means an easier time for me getting a table. We came back this weekend, again for a Saturday dinner, and had a great time. The waiters could not be nicer or more attentive – we had«Silver,» according to our check. The food is great(no, it is not Per Se quality, but it gets the job done) and the beer list has expanded. I checked in on Unilocal and got a free glass of excellent rosé. Honestly, we couldn’t have asked for more. Since I live in Manhattan, I need to find more reasons to pass by Hastings.

We had brunch here. The deck is only single file but it is eating on the water. I would not be willing to spend a lot of money in this place, just because I would not be willing to do that. The interior is not very open to views. I have eaten in this place when it was other«incarnations» and other names and never was really crazy about the«ambiance». The food was good, the drinks were good but for brunch, unusal in Westchester, were not included and we had to pay separately. It is good to be on the water on a good day, with nice waiters and good help and good food though.

Had lunch with a colleague here as part of a scouting mission for a holiday party venue. When my colleague didn’t seemed jazzed about the menu choices, our server asked what she was in the mood for. Out came the chef, and he made her the penne shrimp with spicy tomato sauce she asked for. I had the grilled scallops with vegetables, and my «hold the asparagus» request was honored. We had a lovely hearts of palm salad to start, and the rolls were literally hot – right out of the oven. Dessert was a flourless chocolate cake with homemade raspberry sorbet. The meal was spectacular, the setting so lovely and relaxing, I could have stayed all afternoon, gazing out at the river and the Palisades. Run, don’t walk. It’s a gem.

We’ve eaten here a few times and think of this place as a hidden gem. The staff is super friendly and the views are amazing. In terms of food we enjoyed the candy cane beet salad and the fresh pea soup was excellent. The Fish and Chips are an indulgence worth a try but in general we’ve enjoyed most of what we order each time.

Where to begin with this debacle of a restaurant. I should have read the Unilocalers or the NY Times correction stating the original review was based on a chef who has long flown away(i am sure for good reason) Dining here was like watching a bad comedy of errors. Think the movie Tammy or something of this ilk. It started out great as we arrived. Great views, nice décor but progressively got so bad that we couldn’t believe they were actually handing us a sizable bill at the end of the night as opposed to paying us for having to endure it. The waiter didn’t greet us for at least 15 minutes upon arrival. Once we ordered our drinks, it took a solid 30 minutes for those to arrive. When we asked for bread, they gave us(and I am not joking) a stack of sliced white Wonder bread that they had toasted. The waiter kept making excuses the whole night and when we asked him if one of the dishes we were ordering was good, he said it’s «way better» than the salmon which two of us had ordered. The food was very poor all around. My friend ordered a meal with cauliflower purée on the side and a giant lump of real mashed potatoes arrived with zero explanation. Oh and they were out of milk for the coffee. And the waitstaff looked miserable and had zero skills in hiding this from us as they made excuses for the kitchen and bar all night. The whole experience would have been funny had we not had to pay a significant sum of money to dine here. Laughable. Embarrassing. Inexcusable. Just don’t go here.

The only reasons I am giving Forty North 2 stars instead of 1 are:(1) friendly staff and(2) a fantastic view overlooking the Hudson River. Aside from those two positives, my experience at Forty North was sub-par. The water glasses that were on the table belonged to the customers that were sitting at the table before us. I ordered a burger(medium) and my girlfriend ordered a pasta with a cheesy, bacon sauce and grilled chicken. My bun was burnt and the burger was cooked to a medium-well at least. The pasta was overloaded with bacon to the point where it was all you could taste. Apparently they had a large outdoor seating area prior to Hurricane Sandy which they are rebuilding for this summer. Currently, there is only a small outdoor patio. I hope that my experience was a isolated incident and I would recommend giving this place a try when the outdoor seating area is rebuilt for the view alone.
