While driving by Hazleton at lunch time, I went looking for the town’s signature sandwich, sausage and scomorza — or skamutz, as it’s pronounced around there. Years ago there was the now defunct Fadula’s Tavern on Diamond Avenue that perfected that sandwich to an art form. Wow. I read good reviews about Rostas on 15th Street and decided to give it a try. I’m sometimes amazed when visiting local neighborhood establishments how doting and friendly some are to their«regulars», while ignoring to the point of rudeness folks they don’t already know. Let’s call them«future regulars». Such was my experience at Rostas. So far as the sandwich goes, it was prepared differently than the one I remember at Fadula’s. Next time I’ll try someplace else for the sandwich and hope for a warmer reception.

If you’re ever in Hazelton, PA you have to try the sausage and scamutz hot sandwich. My coworkers and I stopped in there for lunch during a snow storm. Because of the snow storm business was slow, the cook ended up as our waiter and bartender. Eventually another worker came in, but the customer service was still good and he kept our waters and ice tea filled.

I make it a point to go to this place every time I am home. By far the best meatball sandwiches and fries with gravy and scamutz that I’ve ever had in my life. I would give it five stars, however the wait staff is pretty rude. The food totally makes up for it. I will be in town in a few weeks and I will definitely be there assuming that they are open. They do have some strange hours.

I go to this place often. I’m a fan of the pizza. Although its just a store bought shell its still good… The down fall to this place… well its over priced for what they are serving. You could buy the same pizza shell at the grocery store for half the cost. All and all they are doing something right being I keep paying whatever they charge lol

At first glance, Rosta’s appears to be an establishment that has not done any renovations for the last 20 years. I found the service to be marginal. The food was eh… and by «eh» it is nothing to rave about. I found the sauce on the pizza to be runny and the flavor to be palatable, but not memorable. The chili cheese fries were alright. The prices seem a touch high for the quality of food and service. Bottom line: If I had a friend who came from out of town and was looking for a place to have lunch or dinner in town, I would not send them to Rosta’s.

If you’re anywhere close to this restaurant, you HAVE to stop in! I have never had such great anti pasta or pizza as I did at this restaurant. Friendly staff, generous portions, and decent live music on the weekends. If you’ve never tried scamutz and sausage or scamutz and meatballs, this is the place to try it. Local favorites, Farmer’s Ice Tea and Yuengling lager, are plentiful. I’ll definitely be back!

I remember two things about Rostas. 1) A central PA incarnation of The Captain and Tennille singing lounge-style covers in the bar. 2) Bacon cheese fries( ) Actually, I remember three things… the third thing was an evening of good conversation with a great friend. I think there may have also been beer, but that weekend is such a blur I can’t remember what was real and what I’ve since imagined. I’m glad we were able to visit his hometown and sample some of the local greasiness.

Genuine, PA barroom/pizza joint about a mile or so from Penn State and the interstate. I did not care for the pizza as it was the thick, bready style Greek crust we have in Boston at the«House of Pizza» joints. It was«all you can eat wing night» though so I was able to cope. Nice deep fried wings with sauce on the side. Good, friendly service, cozy old time atmosphere and cool patrons make this a destination. I did make the error of buying the last Rostas T-shirt which hung over the bar and had to smell fryolator grease all the way home in the car. Good times baby, good times.

I try to hit up this place when I’m back in town. Great meatball and schamutz pizza! I love the outdoor patio in the summer.

One of the best places in town for sandwiches. Sausage and Schamutz is top notch. If your in Northeast PA and looking for some good grub, it don’t get much better than this.

Whenever we are back in town, a sausage and scamutz is a must! Heaven on a plate best enjoyed with a Yuengling draft.
