Hard to find movies at a rental price that is reasonable. Bring your movies back on time and listen to the employees when they explain how everything works and you will love the fact that there is a video store with over 7000 titles and growing.

On 6÷25÷16, and after returning from about a one week vacation I realized that I had forgotten to return a 5 day video rental from Superstar Video in Hemet. I rented the movie on the 10th. The movie should have been returned on the 15th so we were ten days late. I hurriedly went to the store and the employee asked if I wanted the good news or the bad news first. The employee said I owed $ 21.49!!! Really??? That would be a total charge of $ 24.00 for a $ 2.50 video rental. I responded with shock. The employee said the good news was that he would give me a 50% off coupon and«we would learn by our mistakes». I did not appreciate the condescending remark and told the employee that I didn’t need to be schooled by him. I was so angry that I did not respond to the 50% off offer. I made it clear to the employee that I did not agree with the return policy and said that Superstar was taking advantage of their customers. We have been a faithful customer of Superstar’s for many years and rarely late in returning a video – and when we were late we returned it within one day. Instead of simply stating that he was only an employee and that I could speak with Superstar’s manager when she returned, the employee decided to engage in a patronizing, argumentative verbal Judo with me. I reminded the employee that it was a five day rental and if I had re-rented the movie my total charges should have amounted to $ 5.00(10 days beyond the 15th). The employee said the company did not look at it that way – that they could have re-tented the movie multiple times during the time it was checked out. I reminded the employee that it was a five day rental. He said he agreed that Superstar’s policy sucked and that he could not do anything about it. When I told him that I would share his opinion with his employer, he said that he already had. I paid the $ 21.49 and demanded to have my name removed from the account. I requested to see Superstar’s late fee policy in writing. The employee pointed to a post near the counter at the entrance to the store. It was the counter customers passed up to enter the store and used to return a movie(drop it in a slot), not the one used to pay for a video rental! In the fine print on the one page, 8.5″ x 11″ paper it seemed to indicate that there was a late fee of $ 1.99 per day for«new releases(five days)». However, at the top of the paper it said, «All* Movie Rentals are 5 Days *Except New Releases — 1 day». Therefore I was overcharged about $ 11.00 for the late fee as it was since our movie was not a «new release» according to their posted policy. Later, after collecting my thoughts, I called the employee and requested the 50% discount off of the late fee. He refused and said I would have to talk with Superstar’s manager on Monday. It’s no wonder Superstar’s late fee policy is posted in fine print and at a counter opposite to the one where business is conducted. What a convenient way to rake in late fees from trusting customers. And Superstar’s policy is misstated at that! I regret paying the fee and should have waited until after speaking with the manager. We’ll see how this turns out. In the meantime I will go elsewhere for movies. With the shrinking video rental market(Redbox and online movie rental is taking over), one would think that Superstar would treat their longtime customers with a litter more care and consideration.

So, if you’re stuck in the 90’s and actually still rent DVDs, don’t do it here. I’m being conservative in their favor when I say that 60% of their discs are scratched and, I swear to god, the last one I rented had old food or a booger or something smeared across the read surface. Glad I caught it before I ran it through my laptop. Oh, and they just recently raised their prices enough that there’s absolutely no good reason not to just stream whatever title you were going to waste two trips worth of gas to go here on.

They close at 1000 on Saturday instead of 1100. State they can’t fix the times on the website. Just letting anyone know so you don’t drive out for no reason.
