What the Blue Water Shrimp and Seafood Co. Truck on Hickam AFB needs is some competition. If it had some, they’d have to improve it or it would fail. As it stands, it is the only quick lunch option for those of us who work in the PACAFHQ Building. In other words, their apparent business model is to do only what they need to do to keep a captive audience. I’ve eaten at another Blue Water Shrimp and Seafood Co. Truck and the differences were so striking that I was led to call the other truck to see if they were actually affiliated. I learned they are franchises; owned and operated by different proprietors. This Hickam truck has a Third World vibe to it. One does not get any warm-and-fuzzies about the cleanliness of the inside of the truck based on the outside. First of all, the entire outside of the truck is seriously weathered and dirty. Secondly, it is a second hand truck that is still branded with the pervious business’ signage. The only marking identifying it as a Blue Water Shrimp and Seafood Co. Truck is on the ratty old menu that hangs below the ordering window. Oh, and the menu is a sight. Apparently there are numerous items they no longer serve. I’m basing this assumption on the blue painter’s tape that masks out seemingly random items. – Take a look at the pictures I took while I waited on my pork chop to cook. Speaking of my pork chop, it was actually pretty tasty. There wasn’t a lot of it, but for $ 7 one shouldn’t expect a giant meal. After I walked back to my office, it was still steaming hot, as was the teeny-tiny ear of corn. I wish I could say the same for the rice: It was lukewarm. That’s okay, so was the salad… :-P The young man working the window of the truck was pleasant enough, but if there were different options on the sides, I never heard about them. Until the Blue Water Shrimp and Seafood Co. Truck on Hickam AFB gets some competition, I will continue to eat there. But! Only on the days I’m held captive by a project the boss needs completed ASAP.
