Best Japanese food in Hickory. Friendly, great prices and great atmosphere! Love it…

I have continuously eaten at this establishment and been very satisfied with the quality of their food — but tonight I ordered tuna tataki (seared tuna with sesame seeds on a bed of cucumber salad) and it had no flavor at all, was not seared properly, was brought out cooked unevenly, blood still on the plate with overcooked pieces. It tasted metallic and had a shine to it, which shows me that it is not up to par, especially for an 8 dollar appetizer. Once I brought this to their attention, they refused to take it off of my bill and claimed that they are not responsible for what leaves their sushi kitchen. As a previously loyal customer to this place, I will never come back.

For a strip mall restaurant I’m impressed. Steak, Mushrooms Rice, carrots all cooked well and high quality ingredients.

I always get Teriyaki Chicken and I’ve had a hard time finding it in Hickory without the chicken being chewy, but Sakura’s is on point! Best I have ever had and will definitely come back here!

I’ve been going to Sakura since they opened. Friendly staff and best Japanese food in town. My only complaint is with the drive through, the window is too high for a small car.

Food was so so. The service was terrible. The waitress forgot my husbands beverage and my side of fried rice. She claimed to be extremely busy cleaning up, because she was about to go home. Another waitress took my debit card to the register to pay my bill. As soon as my husband and I leave, the owner/​manager comes chasing us, mind you we were already in our car leaving, saying the waitress forgot to charge us for the beer. We had to go back in and pay for it. Very unprofessional.

Food is good. I ordered the large chicken teriyaki that comes with soup or salad. Soup is really good (house clear soup). Salad was just a tiny little plate – not worth it. My order was $ 6.99 + tax.
Service is OK – waitress didn’t really tend to us. Wasn’t busy so I’m not sure what stopped the waitress from making sure our drinks were filled. After we left, it started getting busier.
It’s a small restaurant; it is not a place for large parties. Atmosphere is OK.

Food is pretty good but do not come here if you have more than 4 people in your party. You will wait over 30 mins. We had 9 people and almost all of us ordered the same thing. Should be pretty easy right? Nope, several people came in after us, got their food, and then left… as we were still waiting for our food.

The shrimp tempura roll and spider roll were very tasty. I also liked the tuna nigiri. This is in a strip mall with décor like McDonalds. Not sure that the sushi rice was anything other than white rice from a rice maker mashed down to semi-​paste texture.
I subtracted a star for the relatively high price. As my husband said «that was not fifty dollars worth of food».

Didn’t even get to try the food cause they closed early. Assholes. We called and asked what time they close and said at 9. We got there at 850 and they locked their doors already. There was another group of people that said we tried getting in too. We knocked and said we can’t accept you. We are closed. Rude and stupid cause they just lost $ 200 plus. from two parties. Not even going to even try it out the next time. Just stupid.

Landed in Hickory a little later than normal and was quite famished. My contact at the hotel reccommended this place since I had been in the mood for good sushi. Of course it was later in the evening and close to their closing time prior to my arrival, 10 minutes prior to closing (I was able to walk in the door).
When I arrived I was promptly greeted with a ‘Sorry we are closed’. I had to opt for a different kind of cuzine that night. I don’t care about the food if your service is sub par.
Note if the time on the door says a certain time of closing you are still open and should have also been asked if I would have liked to ‘take out’ as an option.

I am a very seasoned traveler and lover of sushi, so I was rather excited to find a place that seemed to be a quality restaurant for sushi in little Hickory, NC.
I was not disappointed in the service, but the quality of the food was average and the ambiance a bit too strip-​mall for me. I will try to find a better place overall.
The waitress who served us was very friendly and helpful in explaining what they have here. The freshness seemed good, but the presentation was average — which means something in sushi preparation.
They have invented a local sushi preparation with melted cheese which the waitress was very insistent that we try, which we did. It was OK, but quite honestly nothing I would say is really sushi. I’m from Kentucky so I am comfortable calling this «hick sushi». Anything that adds melted cheese to a foreign dish — come on.
In the end, we did not have a bad experience and the food was decent. I would not come back though without trying other Hickory options because I have to think there are better options.

Best sushi around for the $. The Japanese food is ok but not amazing.
