I eat here on a weekly basis and always get the same thing. Always consistent and tastes very good. Service is *usually* good as well. Only had a few issues with speed and waitresses. Nothing major though!

This is a corner stone of old timey Southern cooking. Red Velvet Cake, Banana Pudding, Carolina Burger with chili and slaw, Fried chicken livers, Liver and onions, Fried okra… Huge menu you may get lost in. Always busy always quick service. Be warned, your waitress WILL call you«honey» or «sweetie».

The SNACKBAR novella, Volume 5: Dinner. I’ve visited the Snack Bar three Saturdays in a row now, for one simple reason: they have Spaghetti Bolognese as one of their specials on Saturday night. The meat sauce is THICK, moderately seasoned, and to me at least… completely satisfying. Their spaghetti pasta is the large, thick, version which is my favorite. The Snack Bar’s spaghetti dinner is offered with toast(ask for more is you need to), and a choice of two side dishes OR unlimited trips to the salad bar. The«smart» money chooses the salad bar, which is continuously being stocked. A GIGANTIC container of Kraft parmesan«cheese» is provided with the meal. The fountain PePsi that I drank was ice cold and industrial strength STRONG, reminiscent of «the good ‘olé days.» My meal cost $ 9.07, before tip.

Ended up in Hickory late this afternoon and decided to try out at least one of the restaurants recommended by fellow Unilocaler’s. Sam J, Michael and others have written well about this place so I have been looking forward to experiencing this place on my own for some time. Was not disappointed. While not fancy, it is what it is and that is good comfort style, Southern cusine. Ordered the fried oysters along with my side which I chose potato salad and fried okra. The oysters along with the cocktail sauce was excellent. The two sides were excellent as well. Only let down was the hushpuppies that came with the oysters and they were way too greasy. Service was excellent and the ambience reminded me or a cross between a fish camp and a greek diner. Both are a very busy atmosphere and an atmosphere that I love. As for as the value … it’s there and very good. My fellow Unilocalers were right and this is a keeper and I will definately be back.

Place was packed with cars, we walked in, got a seat and got Polly, our waitress! Great diner with good ol southern home cooked food. We had breakfast and it was all good, eggs, grits, waffle and bacon. Polly joked with our boys and kept them on their toes. We were hungry and we left satisfied. If we are back in the area that’s where we will go. Got the banana pudding to go and it was yummy!

How this place has a high rating is beyond me. While the service was very good, the food was not edible. The meat loaf was on special and it looked like something you’d find in the toilet.

This place was fantastic! After a long flight to Charlotte and a long drive from there, this meal hit the spot. Walking in I immediately felt like I had stepped through a time machine. Everything, especially the box tv, looked old and it had tons of charm. The wait staff is top notch and they know the order of regulars before they tell them. The food was inexpensive and the portions were large. My Mac and cheese and flounder were incredible and the fried okra was good. I would really like to come back and try the banana pudding. I can’t wait to go again when I’m back in North Carolina.

Has been around longer than I have been born when I was little used to b where call the teenagers hung out in there cars and got Snac burgers and fries. Now the place still serves great burgers and also does home cooked style meals. Most is very good, mist locals have there favorite. Like Fried Chicken, chicken livers, stewed beef, most is pretty good. However I don’t care for the cheese sauce they use taste artificial, and Nash potatoes aren’t bad but not home made.

Good home style food, quick, and reasonably priced. Love going here for lunch when at my Hickory office, you can’t hardly go wrong with any choice here. If you’re expecting fancy presentation, ambience, and elaborate fare; this isn’t the restaurant for you. Great and friendly service!

I had the flounder and salad bar my husband had the double cheeseburger with fries. Sundays in hickory everything is pretty much closed. This place looks old but the staff is friendly, the bathrooms clean, the food was great and cheap.

If you’re traveling through and you want a sample of local flavor, this is the place for you. It’s a longtime local favorite that serves up southern fare at decent prices. The fried chicken is one of my favorites. It’s moist and juicy on the inside, crispy and delicious on the outside. My dad loves the calabash shrimp. He says it’s some of the best he’s ever had and that’s quite a compliment considering the fact that we used to live on the Gulf Coast. The sides are good. Atmosphere is not fantastic, but locals love the fact that everything is just like when they were kids. This is one of the few good local joints in Hickory.

The Snack Bar is a Hickory staple. Its been here for years, and its not going anywhere soon. There is a reason people continue to return year after year. The food is always the same, no matter if its the second time you’ve come or the 22nd. It might not be the most inventive cuisine, but they know what their patrons like and they don’t mess with success. The food is reasonably priced, and although some things and under portioned and under seasoned, its still worth the trip. If you’re from the area, chances are you’ll bump into someone you know.

A trip to the Snack Bar of Longview is always one of standard expectations. It has been there for as long as I remember, dating back to my visits as a child(over 20 years ago)! However old the place becomes, it is always static. I think the same waitresses are still employed after all these years. If you are looking for a homestyle meal at very good prices, then I would highly recommend the Snack Bar. The inside is usually chaotic with people, food and the wait staff on the weekends during high activity times. But even so, getting seated is fast and the wait for food or drinks is very short. On this visit, the place was full and we were seated in about 5 minutes, drinks in 10 minutes, and food in less than 15 minutes since we arrived. Pretty good in my book. The food is always cooked to order, and the last question always asked is «what did I forget?» Since so many of the dishes come out separately in small bowls or individual plates, it usually takes 2 – 3 trips with the large silver plates to get it all out to the table. So, like my star rating states, I’m a big fan! If you get the chance to go for a home cooked meal, head to the Snack Bar!

This place serves country cooking that really impressed! My wife had chicken tenders and I had calabash shrimp. The main dishes were very good. Between us, we had macaroni and cheese, mashed potatoes, crowder peas(which were like black eyed peas), and the salad & fruit bar. She got a biscuit and I got hush puppies. All the sides were very good. I don’t think I’ve had better since we moved. Oh, and all the love for the banana pudding. Totally justified. Seriously, everything was great. I can’t wait to get back for breakfast(though it is served all day). (Additional note: The average diner age was probably 112. And most of the seats were full. I liked the atmosphere though.)

I’m real tempted to drive an hour just to be served banana pudding by the ladies like Glenda who’ve worked here for 40+ years. She tells me, she knows her guests not only by name, but by their orders, like one woman, who gets a lettuce and tomato and mayo sandwich each and every visit. Glenda knows exactly how she likes itl The place is charming and serves great food at great prices. What else could you want? I was up in Hickory for work this past week, and went in to chat with some locals. Everyone was happy to let me sit down with them, and didn’t have a care in the world how long I crashed their lunch. The setting is what you’d expect for a joint opened 65+ years… nothing fancy, but the warm, welcoming environment makes this a poster child for that Diners Drive Ins and Dives show! Oh, and the banana pudding really is awesome, super thick and creamy with vanilla wafer cookies and chunks of banana. Served by Glenda with a smile and hug too, even if she doesn’t know you.

I was driving down 40, hungry, thinking I didn’t want chain food, so I tried this … awesome southern-style American food! If you’re looking for the kind of food you grew up with or are curious what the local North Carolina food is like you should give this place a try … reasonably priced and good!

by far the best breakfast in town. I love the livermush 2 eggs over easy and grits with toast… I know I know you out of towners are all gagging right now, but the great dish of livermush is wonderful. Also they have great omelets and pancakes as well.

The Snack Bar has been around way longer than I’ve been alive. Dubbed the Longview Country Club — this home style diner is where its at for good olé down home bbq, fried okra, meatloaf, or salisbury steak. I must admit, I believe that they removed some of the charm of the place when they tore down the old 1950s Parking Lot Structure. It was those old zig zag carport things? I don’t know what you call them — but I miss them. Anyway — despite that — this is a great place to pop in for a taste of local Hickory. You’ll see old timers and you’ll leave with a belly full of greasy and delicious Southern Style Cookin.
