I am always confident that when I need assistance in finding that right item (s) to make a home repair or improvement I can find it at Craftwood and get help, a suggestion or recommendation. Every time I start a project it usually becomes a bigger project. Today, Jose from the hardware desk personally helped me — he listened to my issue and walked me to the necessary parts. This is why I support and am loyal to my local hardware retailer.

A wonderful small hardware store that amazingly has whatever you need! Staff is good, some better than others. I’ve found the best help To the right of the cashiers. The service desk is handy. There’s a rocker looking guy there who seems to always be working the aisles and is pretty darn good at helping you find what you need by steering you in the right direction. I call him «The Professor». George is always helpful too. I would say the paint department is the weak link, and the hardware the high spot… only due to positive experiences vs. a rather dismissive experience in paint when we once bought some. Bottom line– fairly reasonable prices, unique items that you won’t find at big box and a convenient location with helpful staff. It’s worth paying a little extra to get service and it’s easy to find what you’re looking for.

I am very impressed that the President of Craftwood Lumber & Hardware has taken the time to write me messages but I have to say that my original review still stands.
The dehumidifier is not the issue here. Yes, it does not function as I wanted and I had to modify my usage of it from the garden hose drainage to using its water compartment because of its leaking. It is not worth contacting the company as Craftwood employees advised me to do.
I would truly hope that my review would bring about some serious dialogue among Craftwood’s Managers and Staff about how to make a hardware store that has not only a great location with a wonderful inventory but one that is customer-focused with a friendly and helpful attitude.

Old school hardware store with a good hardware selection. Some of the staff are more knowledgeable with helpful tips than others, but overall you will likely get what you need.

It’s just a brief update…
They don’t have everything here, but that’s okay. I stopped in for a particular 3M Velcro (which they didn’t have) and left with three cans of small sized Benjamin Moore test paint samples, had a key made, purchased a piece of scrap lumber, and picked up a $ 15 kite instead. Oh, and on the way out I grabbed some free popcorn to go. This place has neighborhood hardware store written all over it! Especially with the sweet and friendly customer service every single time.

Can’t imagine life in Highland Park without Craftwood — been going there since i was a kid. In recent years the owners seem to have made a real effort to compete with the big box on price point — they are way ahead on unusual items and customer service. If they don’t have it, they’ll get it. Now that Inman’s is gone, we buy all our paint there, too and love the time and effort put into difficult color matches.

Good store. They have some nice stuff we couldn’t find anywhere else that was essential in our remodeling project. My boyfriend and I bought an old farmhouse in the north burbs and have been redoing it a little at a time. They have a great selection of moldings and trim and good in stock lumber. The one thing I have to say is service is mediocre at best. There are only 1 or 2 people that work there that have any clue about stuff. George was excellent. He is knowledgable. The few others we have come in contact with, sorry to say were worthless. We were better off trying to figure it out ourselves. Overall a nice store, great asset to have in Highland Park.

Old fashioned, in the best way. They have everything, and the best advice. You will never go to Home Depot again. A tad more expensive, but prices are fair by any standards. I love Craftwood. I love supporting a local business. I like seeing the same people working there year after year, earning a living wage. DO save your receipt, as returns are infinitely easier with receipt in hand.

Man, I truly love this place! I’ve been shopping here my whole life and I wish I could find a hardware store like this in California! Craftwood has the right items at the right price and employees that actually know what they’re talking about! Never ending supply of knowledge! There’s no reason to go anywhere else!
