Came across Flip Side on our way to Asheville, after having visited Glenn Falls. This place was great! Service was excellent, despite how busy it was, and my hamburger was out of this world. A generous portion of fries as well. We will definitely go back and I recommend it. Highlands is a pretty hoity-toity community and Flip Side is a breath a regular, good old American fresh air there.

Décor is nothing special, very dive burger joint but food is really good. Ordered their standard burgers and they were better than home cooked. Juicy on a fresh toasted bun, onion rings and coke slaw were so good! Kids likes the fries too. We were very impressed with the quality of food. Nice servers too.

I don’t know how the food was because after waiting 50 minutes for a burger we got up and left. This after watching a local come in after us and get served and finish his meal. Stay away if your from out of town!

Great burgers and onion rings are out of this world. Good selection of beers on draft. Great hometown feel with friendly service. Less salt on fries is only suggestion.

Wending our way back to ATL via the Blue Ridge Parkway and backroads, we happened upon this burger joint. I like burgers. Hell, I *love* burgers. This place has 5-star burgers. No question, no doubt, no problem. The restaurant is on the north margin of the pretentious crap«downtown.» It’s not fancy, but it isn’t particularly a dive, either. It’s simply comfortable, with reasonably-priced burgers. The fries were delicious, as was the selection of draught beers. I’d certainly visit again, if I ever had a reason to be in the area. We were taking the scenic route(which is not pronounced«root,» unless you are from up north and can’t talk American) back to Atlanta coming back from a long weekend visiting the Biltmore in Asheville. I enjoyed the drive more than the tour of the mansion. I enjoyed finding Flip Side even more. Anyway. Give it a go, you won’t be disappointed, unless you are a pretentious maroon that wants sub-zero milkshakes made from compressed nitrogen. That BS in Atlanta is tiresome.

Definitely try the Steak House burger. One of the best burgers I’ve ever had! Was really tasty and full of flavor. We also had the Egg & Bacon burger and Chilli Cheese, which was ok. Good thing is, a lot of their ingredients are house made. $ 9 for a burger is a little pricy, but considering the area we were in, I guess it’s pretty reasonable. Our waiter was very friendly.

Holy Moley! while searching Unilocal for places to eat after a nice hike down Glenn falls we stumbled upon this all American gem! It’s small so expect a wait but while you wait for a table you can enjoy a great beer and the enthusiasm of the friendly staff! Once you get to order — you must try a southern burger with an incredible order of flavorful light battered sweet onion rings! We know our burgers and this place serves up some of the best we’ve ever tasted. They utilize dill in some of their sauces which imparts a subtle nice flavor, the buns taste homemade and everything is fresh. This is an incredible place to spend with family or friends after enjoying scenic Highlands! My only regret is that we didn’t try their fried green tomatoes — Nom, Nom :-)

Great FRESH food and good atmosphere. Few craft brews on tap to boot. Would recommend. Prices are reasonable. Do try the fried green tomatoes with dill mayo dip!

After some trail hiking in Highlands, the Flip Side hit the spot. Great burgers, onion rings and fries. Glad we skipped over Subway to come here. Will definitely eat here again the next time we are back in the area.

Outstanding burger and great onion rings — and generous portions. The home brew catsup was the perfect dipping sauce for the cooked to order high quality, delicious beef burger. Five star service plus very reasonable prices made this epicurean experience a must for the burger connoisseur. From cheap Chip

Seriously, y’all, this is one of the best burgers I’ve ever put in my mouth. The beef is from a local farm only an hour from the restaurant and is quality meat! I had the Flip Signature with a huge patty topped with a fried green tomato, homemade pimento cheese, lettuce, tomato and bacon. Er-meh-gawd…so full of meaty, Southern goodness. We opted for The Dillinger special: for $ 25 y’all get 2 burgers, a plate of fries & onion rings to share AND a pitcher of beer! It was a great deal. The sides were perfectly fried and the Punkin ale was great for the fall weather. Oh, and props to our excellent server! We had a party of 6 and he didn’t even blink an eye when 2 more of our friends pulled chairs up to our table. I highly recommend this joint for anyone looking to grab a late lunch or early dinner. You won’t need to eat for the rest of the day.

So we were able to return for a 2nd visit this past July(2012) and were sorely dissappointed and worse Embarrassed! We brought our family so we were a big BIG party. When we asked for a table, we had a 20 — 30 minute wait. Being the size of our party that was not a problem in our minds… but when 45 minutes passed, then 60 minutes passed it started to be. Once we were seated the food took absolutely forever to get to us. We kept in mind the size of our party, and that it would take time however not that much time! Happily…the food was still terrific.

burgers were pretty good. Service was very slow and they kept trying to get us to hurry up and get done so they could close.

Highlands NC has a very, very limited selection of breakfast spots. This was one of three other places opened at 9AM. The food was super greasy and gave us tummy aches shorty afterwards. Too bad I can’t give them a 3 ½ stars.

First time at this restaurant and I am already hooked. I had the Beelzeburger which has bacon, jalepenos, habenero relish and peperjack cheese… AWESOME! I like food really hot and this thing did not let me down. I think I drank ¾ of a pitcher(of some excellent beer) to balance out the heat. My wife had the Signature burger which was also fantastic. Added a side of fries and onion rings which were breaded and fried to perfection. We will for sure be making it a tradition to have lunch/dinner here from now on when we come to the Highlands :)

We had been driving up 64 from Franklin, NC stopping at all the beautiful waterfalls, we skipped our lunch and kept on going, by the time we reached Highland, NC we were very hungry, so we stopped at a burger place for a good burger. I’ve ordered burger with sauteed mushroom and caramelized onions with swiss cheese, sounds delicious, and the waitress told us that there french fries are hand-cut and delicious. My friend ordered a burger with fried green tomatoes cheese and fried egg, the other ordered a ruben with french fries, and the last person ordered loaded french fries(chili and cheese). But when the food arrived, the loaded french fries were cold, as if it was sitting on a counter for a while, the hand cut french fries were over cooked, crunchy and mummified, hardly any moisture in them, it was by far the worst french fries we ever had. The burgers were dry and tasteless, apparently they haven’t been watching the food network on how to make a good burger, it was over pressed, no moisture left in them. The ruben was dry, the bread was old, so they ate just the corned beef, all the burgers were horrible. But when we mentioned that the french fries were horrible because it’s over cooked, they said«sorry» but did not offer to replace it and charged us whole. I’m surprised they are in business for 1.5 years. But the best part was there iced– tea, it was delicious.

We were a bit concerned when arriving in Highlands that this wasn’t our kind of town. Thankfully, we found Flip Side! A real burger joint, casual, laid back, football on three large TVs, and the food… Oh. My.Gosh. The BEST burger I think I’ve ever eaten. I had the Cowboy: huge burger topped with onion rings and bbq sauce that made me ask for a stand alone order of o-rings & sauce. BBQ sauce was a perfect sweet and tangy. My man had the black & blue burger: blue cheese was really good, perfectly cooked burger and fries were seasoned just right. The sweet tea was awesome! Of course, being Southern I had to have a side of Ranch… it must have been homemade and tasted like none I’ve had before. Can we say anything else to convince you to go? How about it’s a REAL place, not pretentious, and The Panthers were on the big screen? Try it, you will love it.

The burgers, turkey ruben and french fries were great. Good selection of beers on tap, and the service was attentive and helpful. The protabella burger was the only bad thing on the menu, but when we complained, our server was quick to fix the problem. The outdoor porch seating couldn’t have been nicer. Just as John D. points out, this is the perfect casual alternative to Highlands other dinning options.

Out of character for highlands, this casual spot does excellent Burgers and cold beer. We come through this town once a year and when we found this one night it was like finding water in the hot desert. Order at the friendly counter from a diverse selection of tasty burgers and other rhings. Good cooking. All I can say is that if you know Highlands and want something younger and laid back, this will save the day.
