My husband and I discovered this place through a friend’s recommendation. Since then it has become out favorite sushi spot — well worth the 30 minute drive for us. Every time we’ve been there the sushi has been fresh and amazing! We always ask for recommendations each time based on what their server tried that day — We’ve never been disappointed.

My husband and I went last night for the first time. The hibachi tables were packed to the brim causing the service on the other side of the restaurant to be very slow. The menu states you will get clear soup but they give you miso soup(ew). We ordered Edamame, it was OK — nothing special, and Gyoza — nothing special. We ordered two sushi rolls the lava roll and sweetheart roll. The lava roll was cut into sizes so big you would choke on it, but the sweetheart roll was fine. We ordered Hibachi as well but I was extremely disappointed in the«white sauce» which was very watery. It tasted like a horseradish sauce which is nothing like the traditional white sauce I normally get at a Japanese hibachi place. It was very potent and turned me off completely. Maybe this was an off night but I would try it for yourself and decide. I will not be visiting again. Also, my Sweetheart roll looked nothing like what is posted in that photo above.

Fresh fish, great hibachi, and reasonable prices. The service may be slow from time to time but we never leave unsatisfied.

this is our favorite place for hibachi — they have excellent apps and salads also(in addition to what comes with your hibachi meal we always order the grilled mussels and treasure island salad). we have always had the pleasure of having the same hibachi chef — I never remember his name because he’s always egging us on to drink the wine we’ve brought! It’s a great time a great night out and always a good laugh.

We made reservations and arrived at the restaurant at 7:00PM with our two young children. We asked about sitting in the Hibachi side of the restaurant, which was mostly empty. The host said that there were not enough chefs, so we sat in the dining room area. We were served water right away, and after 3 times of tracking the waitress down and telling her that we were ready to order and being told that she would be right there, we left at 7:30 without having put in our order. It felt like they did not want to serve us for whatever reason, but it would have been nice to be told that prior to sitting hungry for half an hour with two kids. Very disappointing.

We eat here every week. The wait staff is friendly and awesome. I’m starting to feel like the convenience of Mahzu is just not worth it any more. There have been too many incidences of fishy fish, ie: spicy tuna should be spicy, NOT fishy. Fishy means they most likely chopped in a blood line(?). When they have a chef from another of their restaurants(from Freehold) our rolls come out different, lacking proper sauces that certain rolls are usually dressed in. Folks(owners), this is just wrong. Also, we love hibachi but never come here because honestly, the food has no flavor. Since the food has no flavor, when our daughter comes with us for dinner(she does not eat sushi) she brings her own mix of sauce to put on her noodle dish, or she wouldn’t come here with us. I enjoy frequenting establishments relatively near my neighborhood, but I am seriously having 2nd and 3rd thoughts now.

This is literally the worst Japanese food I’ve ever had. The appetizer of shrimp and bacon was microwaved. I’m not sure how but they managed to ruin shrimp and bacon. The hibachi was tasteless. I’m pretty sure gerbil food is better. I drive 30 minutes to Shogun in s. brunswick. There is no affiliation. I assure you I don’t know anyone there. Go there and you’ll get the Japanese food that you are looking for. Ask for the garlic sauce… Then thank me.

I first moved into the area a couple of years ago, and Mahzu was hands down the best hibachi around. I don’t know what has happened. But sadly, it’s gone down hill. I will say that the service is always quick and pleasant. It’s the food that lacks something. We ordered the bacon wrapped shrimp app. Somehow, the bacon managed to be tasteless. Couldn’t figure that out. Then we ordered our respective hibachi chicken dinners. Also strangely tasteless. That’s all I can say.

We went twice here and it’s really awful. Everything is overpriced and tastes like dry flavorless paper. The second time I developed a bad headache after eating the shrimp tempura. Never again.

I have had to wait over an hour to get some of my complete meal. I was served salad, 30 minutes later 2 out of 4 rolls, and was waiting for the rest of my meal that didn’t even show up by the time we walked out. No excuses!!!

We went to Mahzu with four generations of our family: from age 5 to age 88. This hibachi/Japanese restaurant is great for everyone. From the time we entered until we left, we were entertained, prepared a deliciously tasty and fresh meal, and served hot green tea. Our chef was not only talented in preparing and seasoning our shrimp, salmon, and fillet mignon hibachi, but he also had great talents for chopping, tossing and putting on a wonderful grilling show! The children made attempts to catch zucchini and broccoli in their mouths and the adults tried their talent a drinking saki from a stream in mid air. All of this was part of the entertainment as the chef prepared the meals. Deliciously seasoned soup, a salad and a shrimp appetizer ‘came with’ the hibachi meal. Choices for dessert included green tea, red bean, vanilla, chocolate or strawberry. The red bean ice cream was the HIT of the desserts. Although we were there for just a fun family Friday night, there were several birthday celebrations while we were there. This is definitely a place to which we will return: fun, delicious, entertaining and fresh food!

One word for this place. Disgusting. Me and my boyfriend had an awful experience here. We decided to try this place out. Very nice looking when you walk in, but I can’t say the same about the food. We didn’t do the hibachi we sat down in the dining area. We ordered sushi and an entre. My boyfriend also ordered soup as a starter and our waitress who spoke English horribly failed to tell him that his entre already came with soup and salad. So my boyfriend ended up with two soups. Our sushi was awful and we had better sushi before. Our entres were garbage my beef with brocoli was tasteless and his 16 dollar chicken teriyaki was really dry. Never again

Tried this location the other night and I have to be quite honest it was quite delicious. We enjoyed the joy smile appetizer which was grilled eggplant stuffed with salmon and drizzled with a pony sauce, yummy. The chef special of the stir fry clams were delicious but many shells were empty and one was actually closed(not good). The sushi we had was decent. The san Francisco roll and the ninja were really good. I had the pan fried tuna with ginger sauce another chef special which was outstanding. My son had the beef chow fun which I sampled and it was really good. We ended the meal with banana tempura and green tea ice cream, not the best ive had but still yummy. Definitely worth checking out. Cant wait to try the hibachi.

Food is always good. The place is empty and we get seated, have soup and salad. Then others come and get seated with us. We’re now waiting an extra 15 min for them to order, and have soup and salad. Plenty of chefs, no reason to inconvenience us having to wait.

Basically Mahzu is a clean, somewhat attractive, safe restaurant for utility sushi and what can best be described as elder Japanese. Nothing stands out, not the sushi, not the Bento, not the weak tea… not even the grill where folks spoil their noisy and disinterested grand kids with whoops every time a shrimp goes flying. Safe and boring Japanese for the early bird special crowd.
