Chubby’s is great. Everything is great there.
The salads are top notch, the subs are superb and the pizza is the pinnacle of pie.

Best sub in the Universe. Freshest bread, highest standards of quality. I went there on Friday and received service that most restaurants reserve for Tuesday’s. Don’t miss Chubbies if you are ever in hickory North Carolina.

This place is always BUSY! Much of the local community dines here on a regular basis, as well as the local hospital staff, ALL of the police force in the county, and me.
Cheesesteaks are available on Tuesdays and Thursdays only. Why this is limited to two days per week is beyond me. I order an eight inch (half) with mushrooms, onions, and green peppers. The cheese choice is either mozzarella or pepper jack. Pepper jack makes it spicy. They put plenty of beef on the sandwich, and the topping is usually primarily pizza type mushroom slices, which is alright with me. I like mushrooms! It’s a good and tasty sub.
(Speaking of spicy, they also carry jalapeño potato chips in the bag, but they’re…whew, too much for me.)
The other days of the week… I routinely order an eight inch (half) Italian sub. This sandwich comes with the Italian meat combo, lettuce, tomato, onions, oregano, mayo, and oil/​vinegar. Depending upon who makes this sandwich it can be from good to really outstanding. I get mine toasted. It also comes with rippled chips and a pickle spear. The price is reasonable at $ 8+ for these items plus a soda.
(Last night the «new girl» put too much mayo, too little oil/​vinegar, and she forgot the oregano altogether, so it could have been better.)
The restaurant is very clean… most of the time. When the owner is absent the employees slack off a little with their sweeping and table cleaning. When the female owner is present… the place is immaculate.
They’ve just installed a new computer ordering system, which has thrown the staff into chaos. It took five minutes for them to enter my order for an ordinary grilled cheese sandwich the other night. LOL. It was worth the wait, but I wish that they grilled their grilled cheese sandwiches properly with butter, like I do at home. *sigh* I also wish that they had a grilled PIMENTO cheese sandwich on the menu. Hey, it’s the South, we like pimento cheese here. The stuff is good, especially when it features coarse ground sharp cheddar cheese and pickled jalapenos.
Their bread is baked fresh daily and it makes a world of difference to the taste of the sandwich. I would suggest ordering one’s sandwiches toasted, but have it your way. They routinely offer «white» or «wheat.» (French or crusty would be a nice addition. Jimmy John’s offers multi-​grain.)
They also bake chocolate chip and macadamia cookies fresh daily, and these are not to be missed. They are $.50 each, quite delicious, and often gone well before the 8 p.m. closing. I missed out last night. *boo hoo*
My only criticism would be that I wish the female owner would learn to smile. She runs a tight ship and the employees complain (not to her face) that she’s a «ball buster.» If that means that she provides good food for reasonable prices, and runs a profitable busy business… I can live with that. In fact, I applaud a strong willed owner who insists on quality whether they be male OR female. That’s why her business is SO successful, which is what the employees don’t understand.
The food is good, period.
This is my new favorite sandwich shop.

The subs are always very good. Perfect for dine in @ lunch dinner or take out. This place has been here for 15 plus years or more. Nothing fancy, just good food and very clean. Check it our next time you are in hildebran. Also just down the road is where the 1^st hunger games was filmed.
