Total hole in the wall place. I give 5 stars because their sashimi was BOMB. Extremely fresh and very large cuts. Well worth the price. No more different than any other standard sashimi dinner, so can’t really elaborate on that. If you are in Hillsboro and want sashimi, go here.

Awesome. Awesome. Awesome. Cozy but big, quant but live; fabulous setting and even more fabulous service. I HIGHLY recommend this place. I am very particular when it comes to fresh sushi vs. fast/convenient sushi but I don’t mind trying really any type of roll; super fresh and super fun options here. I let my brother-n-law and his friend(avid sushi goers) do the ordering, with the help of our wonderful server whom was super knowledgeable for only having been there just over a month; I wish I could remember the name! Server even had a special roll(not on that menu) made for us to end our amazing sushi exspierence, before delicious dessert of course. We had two kids and four adults and we were a hand-full, but our server had fun with us! Note* Large sake menu and just great everything. Averagely priced, well worth it. I’m looking forward to my next OR visit, this place is now a must-do. Can’t wait to try the patio dining, looks lovely.

We really liked this place. The setting is very cozy and welcoming. The Spicy Oregon was very good and fresh. The California rolls were your standard like in other sushi joints. The volcano looked and tasted amazing.

I can’t stop eating here. Seriously I will go broke! I’m in love with their sushi. I’m currently pregnant so I only eat the California rolls. Normally, I don’t eat California rolls because they have imitation crab, but not these guys! Real crab inside, yum! I can never eat at another sushi place and feel satisfied again.

Great service and great atmosphere but tables too close to each other to have a private conversation. Seaweed salad was not traditional but good; soba was well prepared but broth just about adequate. Tempura was delicious and basic miso was nice but portion on the smaller side. Would go back for more. A cute little gem in Hillsboro. Pricey.

Yes, nothing fancy here but a very cool spot in old town Hillsboro. Located in the basement of an old library you find a very authentic Japanese restaurant and sushi bar. So location was unexpected and the ambience perfect from the moment you walk down the stairs. Nice tables and get staff offering happy hour and sake menu of which we did sample both. We ordered a «I Love You Roll» appropriate for our Valentines dinner and all I can say is, i love you i live you roll. I can’t remember exactly what it was made with other than chunks of lobster inside and topped with ahi. We also ordered some sashimi and a beef dish off the main menu and all were exceptional. While my project in Hillsboro is winding down and I’ll be back in Bend full time, we will make the trip and return here sometime soon. Really recommend this place as it’s fun and unlike some sushi type restaurants, this one is worth the visit.

Is our go to spot for dinner in Hillsboro. I don’t even remember how long you’ve been coming here but it’s been at least 15 years, I think, and the food has always been excellent!

So I heard great things about this place and me and my brother check this place out. I ordered the salmon avocado roll sushi and there was a Fish bone in my sushi! That is all I have to say. Take your bites very carefully. The waitress was so callous about it! Like it was nothing.

I am a semi regular visitor. In my last few visits, I was blown away. Not do much this time Unagi nigiri: Unagi is always good. But it was a bit salty. Mango tango: okay ish Omakase roll: decent Volcano roll: probably the best of the bunch

This place used to be great. The fish was über fresh and the sake selection fab. No more. We walked in last night and felt like we were intruding. The tables were empty but for one four top. Still I had to ask if they were open. We sat at our table and found a happy hour menu that seems to go on for all but a couple of dinner hours. That was the first red flag. That many«happy» hours seems a desperate plea for business. Isn’t the fish good enough to lure customers in?(No pun intended.) Evidently no. I ordered the o’toro and it was the funkiest fish I’ve ever had the misfortune of putting in my mouth, however briefly. It had a funky look to begin with. White and fuzzy, kinda scummy looking, with fat lines running through it like each piece had been pressed between 2 sets of chop sticks or something. It just looked odd, like no o’toro I’d ever seen in 40 + years of eating sashimi ALL over the world. My dining partner said right away, «You can have that one.» :D :D I put it in my mouth for all of a second and had to spit it out. It was slimy! REALLY slimy. So I sent it back. The 2 Mexican sushi chefs didn’t like that. One of them said, loud enough for me to hear very clearly, «There’s nothing wrong with that fish. You can take it off the bill but keep it.» Keep it?! What does he plan on DOING with it? Serve it to another unsuspecting customer? Is that why it’s so slimy and has weird markings on it? I shudder to think. Yuck! Anyway, the sake is good so I was willing to let it go and enjoy the rest of my meal. The gobo salad comes along and it’s limply swimming for it’s life in a creamy tahini dressing. Pass. Next came the amberjack from the happy hour menu. We’d ordered one before the slimy fish fiasco and it was a hearty portion. Running out of safe things to order I ordered another. This second one was much much tinier. Teensy weensy portion that one. I guess the chef didn’t like me no more. :D :D Then, as if rotten fish and a rude clueless sushi chef weren’t enough, over comes the teenage«manager». Snarkily she tells me that the markings in the fish are fat. Uh, I’m a 55 year old woman who has eaten a bazillion orders of sashimi over a 40 + year period. I know my o’toro. The marbleizing is not at all what we saw on that poor fish. She tells me it just came in a half hour ago. You should have seen the bratty look on her face. I told her I was sorry she got bad fish. She tells me it isn’t bad. I tell her to eat it then because I won’t. I don’t eat rotten food. I have standards. I also remind her that the customer is always right. She stammers out yes, yes of course. Blah blah blah… We leave. I eat some left over curry at home. On the way out I address Miss Emily, the teenage«manager». I tell her for one that talking about a customer behind their back loud enough where they can hear you is very unprofessional. And to come over to the customer’s table and try and make them wrong is also a no no. I tell her finally that when a customer orders their meal all at once, that doesn’t mean they want to EAT it all at once. A tiny two top is only so big. TIMING the meal is part of the wait staff’s job. She, as «manager», is responsible for how the floor is run. It’s HER job to see to it that the customer is happy. Being snarky, defensive, competitive and immature is NOT part of the professional’s job. Never mind the slimy old fish and the soupy salad. The place was frickin’ EMPTY. They had no reason to dump our entire meal on the tiny table all at once. If ya like slimy old fish and snarky managers, this is your place. It’s cute. The waitress was attentive. But for me it’s all about the freshness of the fish and the professionalism of the staff. For those reasons I cannot recommend this place. I mean if you end up having to eat at home after you’ve shlepped a half hour to a restaurant, would you really be keen on going back?

Best sushi I have found in the area, excellent wait staff, and very charming interior décor. I have tried everything from their appetizers to their chef selected sashimi and nigiri and each time I have been incredibly happy with the quality of the food.

This place rivals with a fave Seattle sushi joint! Their special was a smoked salmon cheek that was done SUPERBLY! The rest of the meal followed suit — sushi was like butter, and EVERYTHING was of high quality, both in grade and presentation — and their wine and sake selection was also excellent. Highly recommend this place, but be sure to get reservations!

I wouldn’t have found this place without Unilocal. It’s literally in the basement of a Library… so random… It’s a gem for Japanese food in Oregon, but the service is really cold and lacking. Servers only stick to their own tables. My waitress was VERY pushy with making sure I ordered a drink, and didn’t even take my order until I personally had to get up and ask… Sashimi is delicious but I had no idea what I was eating… waitress didn’t seem to really know either… Waitress pushed the crêpe which is seasonal… it was nasty! Too much artificial flavoring! YUCK!

Who would have thought Hillsboro would have such a great sushi spot?! One of the BEST sushi places outside of Portland. Came here with my coworkers. Would definitely recommend getting some sake. Rolls-wise, Highway 26 is a MUST + their sashimi boat is solid af.

I can see why this place has the rating it has. This is a very good sushi restaurant that is worth every penny. This was my first visit here so I drove by the restaurant several times until my friend text me that the restaurant was located below an old library. Once I arrived and was seated with my friends I was amazed how friendly our waitress was. I noticed how fresh the fish was. It is obvious a point of emphasis. The waitress told us that the sake was very good and we were eager to try a few. Not sure what we tried but it did pair nicely with our sushi and sashimi. The décor is okay. I would recommend this place to anyone in the Portland/Hilsboro area.

This place has gone down the hill since few months ago when it’s Japanese chief replaced with Mexicans. The same thing with waitresses. The taste and presentation of the dishes call for one star. Don’t waste any $$$ in this hole.

I was happen to be in the area and remember of this place. Been 10 years since I’ve eaten here and everything was still top notch! The restaurant was bustling on a Saturday evening, we didn’t have reservation but were lucky to grab a spot at the sushi bar right away. We were not super hungry so we decided to get a few izakaya small dishes. Below are some of the food we had: Clams miso soup — Clams was sweet and fresh, miso soup was a touch on the salty side Gyu tataki — Very good! light ponzu sauce that brought out the flavor of the meat perfectl Sake yakionigiri — Good! had just the right amount of sweet savory soy sauce. It would’ve been perfect if it was more crispy on the outside. Assorted nigiri — Uni was very good. Tai, hotate, amai ebi, anago were also good and fresh. Fried calamari — Good dish, but I felt I had better Service was good, they were very busy so we had to wait a while for some of the dish. Our waitress although busy did check back to see if we needed anything which I really appreciate. Definitely one of my favorite Japanese restaurant in Oregon. Love that it’s an izakaya and not just another sushi restaurant. Can’t believe I haven’t been back here for so long, but will go back here for sure next time when I’m back in Oregon.

This place is amazing! A small sushi place with some outside seating when weather permits. The staff is super friendly and the the food is about as fresh as you can get. They will start you out with soup and a small salad, then you can tell the waitress what you want(they don’t have those sheets of paper where you mark what you want). You can also tell the guys behind the counter making the sushi what you want. Not much more to say except get over when you get the chance because it’s totally worth it.

I wasn’t quite sure what to expect eating sushi on a hot summer day in a suburban city in Oregon but Syun was an enjoyable lunch! Our whole group got the $ 15.50 lunch special. It came with two choices plus rice, salad and miso. I chose the sashimi and shrimp and veggie spring roll. The sashimi was fresh and cut nicely. The spring roll was way too large and fell apart but the ingredients were fresh. This space is nice and clean. My only other complaint would be that it’s more a sushi restaurant, not an izakaya. There weren’t a lot of izakaya-like dishes on the menu.

My favorite Japanese restaurant since arriving in Portland/Beaverton area. Pretty brash to say since it was just one visit. Yes, but I know what I like. I had heard many recommendations for Syun but still didnt know what to expect. What I got was exceptionally fresh fish, lovely presentation, quick, great service, and able to get a reservation without a problem. I was especially happy with the generous serving of fresh chirashi. Salmon was exceptional that night. My daughter loved her Japanese style hamburger steak with sweet potato fries. We both ordered dessert as well. I loved my fried tempura bananas. My daughter’s green tea icecream dessert(can’t remember the name) had a little bit of everything. I savored it all with Kurasawa sake. I think we will be making our way to Syun regularly… maybe next time for Happy Hour. So happy to have listened to the advice of Syun’s loyal peeps.

Their sushi is good like usual. Since it was a special occasion, I decided to try their $ 50 omakase set. I was not impressed. Omakase is supposed to be the chefs special 5 course meal. It didn’t have a wow factor like other Japanese restaurants in Portland. It lacked presentation. It was strictly seafood and sashimi. It would have been nice to see vegetables and meat incorporated in the dishes. Then to end with some frozen mochi ice cream was a let down. Really slow service. Probably 10 minutes to order. 30 mins to get food. Restaurant was fairly empty. One waitress is not enough for the entire restaurant. If they were any closer to Portland, they would be out of business.

This is a family owned restaurant and is one of the best Authentic Japanese Izakaya around! People from all over the world hear about this place and come to try it out. TRUSTME, you will not regret it as long as you keep these things in mind: 1. This place is a tiny restaurant which truly represents an authentic Izakaya(pub-like) 2. They serve Small Dishes and are meant to be eaten«family style.» Many of the dishes do not come with rice so if you know you want this make sure to ask. However, there is the option to order a combination dinner which is $ 22(This is more of a full meal and very traditional) — Located on the seasonal menu. 3. Like many of the regulars will tell you this place can get packed! Be patient… the waitresses and workers truly care about you and your visit. :) 4. ALWAYSASKABOUTTHESEASONALDESSERT! A Few of my Favorites: KITCHEN— Oregon Salad, Hamachi Kama, Kanpachi Kama, Tempura Appetizer, Nasu Miso, Miso Tonkatsu, Katsu Kare, Nabeyaki Udon, Seafood Okonomiyaki, Chawanmushi, Sake Chazuke and ANYDESSERT! SUSHI— Spicy Oregon, Uni Hand roll, creamy scallop hand roll, Boston bay(twist on a spider roll… so good!), Premium California Twist, TNT roll and OMAKASEROLL(Sushi chef surprise!) DRINKS— Glamour Girl, Mascato, STARS sake.(Ask your waitress about sake though… they have a whole menu!!!)
