This is one of my favorite stores in Hilo. They not only carry the typical military surplus inventory, but also have a wide range of camping supplies, cooking and grilling utensils, cast iron skillets, and cool weather clothing. I always find something in this store, and the staff is extremely knowledgable and so nice! Even if you don’t think you’re the type of person to visit a surplus store, stop in because they have so many things that you wouldn’t even think of!

This is one of your typical surplus stores with a whole lot of gear that’s perfect for outdoorsy activities, or starting your own militia! There’s wall to wall shelves of old camouflage uniforms, jackets, shirts, pants, boots, camping gear, hats, and the list goes on and on. The lighting isn’t very bright and there’s dust everywhere. Just like any self-respecting surplus store should be. The staff here is very friendly and welcoming. When we were making our purchase the lady behind the counter knew we were heading up to Mauna Kea because of the warm gloves and hats that we were buying, and made some small talk about it. And like just about every shop in Hilo there’s free street parking within a very short walk from the store. I would have to say that the thing I liked most about this shop is that they have very good cold weather items for a very low price all year round! So if you find yourself in Hilo in the warmer months, and want to journey to the top of a very high mountain, you don’t have to worry about scouring Ross or Sears for good warm clothes. Just stop by Hilo Surplus Store, and you can find what you need!

I flew into Kona and the flight was late. My room reservation was in Volcano which is 20 plus miles from Hilo. I needed fuel for my backpacking stove. At ten to five I called the store. The said they closed at 5:00. They also said they would wait. I was 10 minutes late and they were waiting. This store is the definition of aloha. Mahalo. I got my fuel and I was on my way to a great adventure.

5÷2÷8÷08: Great surplus store carrying all kinds of camping gear for your needs. I only discovered this place today while out during the lunch hour. They carry the normal military surplus goods(tents, clothing, bullet casing boxes, cookware, etc.) and MORE. Lots of backpacking gear from pre-packed dehydrated meals to pressurized gas canisters, assortment of bulk ropes and cords, knives, tarps, etc. If you plan on any camping trip on the Big Island, call them for any missing supplies.
