Hilo Town Tavern

We had the sloppy joe and the chicken tenders, half with peanut butter and jelly and coconut. I didn’t really like the sauces. Service was pretty slow and pretty loud inside. We will not go back…

Sunday afternoon, great fish & chips! Excellent bar staff. Good music, a great way to spend the afternoon. Excellent atmosphere. Indoor outdoor areas, pool tables and plenty of restrooms.

Had a blast on the live jazz band night. Great crowd and a fun time. Great location and it seems like the late night place to be in Hilo town.

The bartender (sorry, never asked your name) on Saturday and Sunday mornings makes a PREEETTTTTTY GOOOOD Tequila Mary. Best I’ve had!

Love this place — good food, great service, friendly people!

Walked by after dinner at Kan Pai. (Go there!). Fun atmosphere, friendly people. Had a band playing. Eclectic crowd.

Great music… a little understaffed.
After a long day at the beach, we ran into town looking to relax and enjoy some ono grindz. We stumbled into HTT and saddled up to the bar. The bartender (a tall young man) was friendly and tended to us within minutes… then it got busy. After only one drink, the bar started filling up. By the time the band started playing it was a full house. I ordered sweet potato fries and another drink, and the bartender told me it was going to take a while. However, I did not wait long to receive my order. By the way, they were delicious!
The band began playing and our initial bartender eventually left. There was a replacement bartender, but by this time HTT was swamped. I was not able to order another drink. If I were sitting at a table I could understand not getting tended to quickly however, the tables were getting better service than the patrons sitting at the bar. My second drink and fries were gone and the ‘tender had still not checked to see if we would like to re-​order. So at this point, I decided to leave. The customer should not have to wave down the server for a drink, especially when sitting three feet from their face. We can see you… and wish you could see us back.
On the nights when the band is going to fill up the house, I would suggest staffing a little heavier. I even noticed that the patrons sitting outside had to come in and order their own drinks. There were only two servers on the floor, which was not sufficient to cover outside guests as well.
I do recommend HTT for locals/​tourists. The other guests were friendly and the traditional Hawaiian music was a nice change from the Top 40 background music found in the trendier bars. We’ll be back… fo’ sure!

It’s a dive. Hilo doesn’t offer much so this is kinda it. At least they have pool and some art on their walls. The crowd isn’t the most conscious…

Great local brews and entertainment!!! On the Tuesday that I had arrived, an amazing band was playing Hawaiian music — they played so in sync– like a well-​oiled machine!!! On a Thursday night they had an awesome dj spinning a mix of hip hop and top 40. I didn’t get a chance to try the food, so I can’t comment on that at this time.

Ok… just walking by the smell of urine was over powering just past their door. Didn’t even bother to stop in for a quick game of 8 ball…

We had a really nice time in this bar. It’s a very neighborhood feel. Nice people, cold beer. I’ll be back.

If you want to pay for a Long Island and get served a non-​alcoholic beverage, well then this is the place for you!

Hands down best bar in Hilo! The owner, Issa, is a sweetheart and really gives back to the local community. He is helping build a skatepark for the local youths. The wings are great and live music is almost a nightly occurrence. Hop next door for killer sushi.

Had a great time at First Friday art walk. The music was incredible and the food was just as fine. We visit from Portland once a year and this will certainly be a regular stop. Try the pulled pork sliders with a kona brew.

They just became a wing joint and it is awesome. 20 flavors to try from, can’t wait to try them all. Place can get wild late night, depending on what’s going on. Pool tables, outdoor area (covered), usually live music. Bartenders are always super nice, even when the place is packed, which is impressive. Drinks are made well and reasonably-​priced. The owner is frequently there and always checks on how people are doing. Place has gotten a lot better over the years and the new wing menu has made the tavern the place to be for food and drinks!

As I drove by HTT I head some of the most amazing music that I HAD to stop in… I LOVE dive bars and this did not disappoint. Only thing is the drinks could be a little less $$… (It’s not dive bar prices)… The group that was performing plays every Tuesday… If I lived in Hilo this would surely be my Tuesday night spot… I enjoyed watching the colorful patrons almost as much as watching/​listening to the band. The only reason I am not giving them 5 stars is because when I went to the bathroom I saw the HUGEST cockroach. Needless to say I wouldn’t eat at Hilo Town Tavern. But the music and ambiance is all that.

This place is a total sh*th#le…staff is sup par and the people that frequent are just as bad. Who does multiple choice trivia… answer public educated local Hawaiians… true brain trust and sloppy service here.

Thanks for the hospitality! Got to come here with a group helping after the hurricane and they took good care of us! Pool, music, and drinks– right on!
