The breads are good as slicing type sandwich breads. They are however, not at all in the«artisanal» category of crusty, crunchy, chewy French or Italian style bakeries.(Perhaps these type breads would not hold up well in our warm humid semi-tropical climate?) The bread sometimes does tend to be dry(over baked?) so check for the nice squishy ones if you prefer moister bread. They all make excellent toast, even when dry. The cinnamon buns, which look good, are way too much like uninteresting whole wheat bread rolls, lacking in filling and sweetness. If I am going to eat a sticky cinnamon bun I want it to be an indulgence! The cookies, which are a little pricey,($ 6 a dozen) are very good in both flavor and texture, if you like mostly crunchy cookies as I do.

I buy their cranberry macnut bread almost weekly, 2 loaves at a time since it is ono toasted for breakfast and made into sandwiches. With grocery store bread prices so high, why would anyone pass up on fresh baked bread?

Friendly staff. We came in to get cookies. They didn’t seem to have a lot of stuff to choose from, but maybe that’s because we came in at 4pm and they close at 5pm. Anyway, I got a molasses gingerbread cookie and my husband got a spicy chocolate cookie. Both were good, but could have been better if they were chewier, and both were very thick and dense. Both were rather spicy, so if you don’t like spice in your cookies, you wouldn’t like these cookies. I tolerated the spice, but the gingerbread cookie might have been a little over-spiced. Overall, good cookies, but not out-of-this-world amazing. Very cheap, though. It was $ 1.20 for the two cookies.

Even I get tongue-twisted trying to pronounce the name of this bakery haha! Papa’a Palaoa Bakery located in downtown Hilo and just a few doors down from Sushi Ebisuya. They are open daily from 5 am to 4 pm I believe. Look for the blue storefront and follow your nose haha! We figured we take a cruise after eating at Sushi Ebisuya so we ended up checking this bakery out. The aroma was pretty enticing, let me just say! Fresh baked bread, baked goods and cookies. This is pretty much local business at its best. I was pretty full from lunch and that’s why I didn’t get to try numerous items from here accept for their scone. From the looks of the menu, all seems great enough to try! The interior is clean and the placard is green, you know what I mean? Fresh baked bread, can’t go wrong with that! Support local!

Whenever I’m in Hilo, this place is a must. They have this cardamom coffee cake that is to die for. Last time I was in town for business, we made a pit stop here and I bought two of the aforementioned cakes, one to enjoy immediately, and one went into the freezer for later. It kept very well in the freezer, although it wasn’t in there very long, haha. A must if you’re in Hilo!

I love these guys! My parents and I have been going to them for years for their chai and bread at the Volcano farmer’s market, and I’m so excited to see them open a shop in Hilo. I’m only on the island occasionally now, but when I am, I always go back to their stand at the market. My favorite bread is the cranberry macnut, and the cardamom coffee cake is to diieee for. They also make delicious hot breakfasts at the Volcano market, my favorite of which is the breakfast sausage sandwich. This Thanksgiving, I made a stuffing out of the cranberry macnut bread, and it stole the show! Keep up the great work, guys, and see you next time!

I love that this place has vegan options. Cinnamon rolls are so good and the breads are even better. I hope they will have more vegan pastries soon. Highly recommended if you want fresh breads.

Leaving the Big Island today still dreaming of the shockingly delicious cardamom muffin and nut and fruit bar I got here. Had an awesome breakfast from them at the Volcano farmers market, too. We’ll make them our first stop next trip.

Delicious, super friendly and helpful. I purchased a yummy loaf of their seeded bread for my hubby who doesn’t like sweets birthday cake. He enjoyed every bite! 5 stars if they made a yummy loaf of gluten-free bread for us allergic folks ;)

This bakery is a must visit. I admit I only had the cinnamon buns, but wow! They’re giant, vegan, delicious and affordable! I appreciate that they’re made with a whole grain. The drip coffee was tasty as well. I will miss this place when I return to the mainland. I took a six pack with me on the plane to enjoy upon my arrival, and eating them brought back sweet memories of my visit to the Big Island.

Best baked goods in Hilo Period! warm and friendly staff with good prices for home baked goodness. I love their Chorizo, Jalapeño quiche. Their cinnamon rolls are evil but oh sooo good.

Tried the cranberry Mac nut bread today… sorry, just not my kind of bread. It was really heavy and dense. Not fluffy and moist. Wasn’t dry either, but I just like my bread nice and soft. Flavor was ok. Tons of cranberry and Mac nuts in the bread.

Small operation. Real ingredients. Very affordable. Super friendly staff. Very accommodating. First heard about them when we attended a birthday party at Lucy’s across the street; the carrot cake and apple pie the hosts served after our meal and margaritas were amazing. Grated carrot, sweet, delicious cream cheese frosting, apples with texture, a nice crust, and a classy glass pie dish that made the whole thing seem heartfelt and wholesome. The host pointed across the street, so I checked it out later on with my family and love it. Small seating area, lots of baked goods(bread, cookies, pies, cakes, etc) on racks. Highly recommended. Reminds me of my favorite bakeries in the Portland area, where I lived for quite some time.

Bought chappati bread on Saturday, was moldy by Monday. The one piece I did try was a bit heavy on the flour and had a less than great texture. They were ok, but was bummed they molded so quickly, especially with it being so dry and having been stored properly. I will likely give them another try, but will likely wait a while so that hopefully they can get into the groove.

Walked by and had to stop in. The bread felt heavy so I was uncertain and only purchased the small loaves(love that they had two sizes!) of cranberry mac nut and sourdough and a bag of English muffins. They are DELICIOUS! Heavy, but not hard, great texture and mix of flavors. Since I was only visiting I can’t get more and wish I purchased the larger loaves! I love that they are healthier wheat based breads too. Now I’m wishing they had a store on Oahu! I don’t know where to buy fresh, wholesome bread here.

Newly opened in Hilo. Went there with the kids on Easter Sunday for some alternatives to the bad after-church donuts. Ended up bringing home a freshly baked bread(still piping hot as I like), blueberry muffin, and cinnamon rolls. Really friendly employee to match the small place. No tables and chairs yet, but the great grub and happy kids more than made up for it.
