To be honest Save-A-Lot is most likely to be a grocery store where more customers use EBT cards than debit or credit cards, but hey, the poor and marginalized amongst us gotta eat too — so God bless ‘em! Like it’s «sister» store in concept, Aldi’s, you bag your own goods. Unlike Aldi’s there is no quarter surcharge for cart usage, and that’s where the buck pretty much stops. Aldi’s, after all, is a part of the Trader Joe’s chain, so just because food is discounted doesn’t mean it isn’t high end. You could stock a high society cocktail party on Aldi comestibles, the same won’t hold true for Save-A-Lot. This is a down and in-your-face store for the people, in the ghetto and customized to make its customers happy. Large packaged portions of chicken, pork(with a nice selection of thick cut bacon you don’t usually see elsewhere — even the Oscar Meyer and store named brands at Publix are still wallpaper thin compared to these), beer and kool-aids(or well over a dozen varieties of sugary soft drinks that are sure to keep the children happy and wired and your diabetes medication omnipresent). I would definitely go back as I see this store must cater to a sizeable Mexican population; they had a wide variety of cheeses from different Mexican states that I haven’t even seen at the Tortillera ’round the road from me on West Dixie and anyone whose cooked with fresh Mozzarella will be surprised how stringy Oaxacan can match its gooey salty flavor when melted over pasta. Another bargain I didn’t take this time around were stewing hens that while small were only $ 2.00 each — I’m wondering if they were actually guinea fowl. You could purchase some similar cuts of meat at Penn Dutch but the poultry and pork are definitely a bargain so if you’re cooking a large amount for a large party — this might be a go to stop. For the aforementioned cheeses alone I’ll be back as well as for the inexpensive canned items that also seem to practically scream«bargain.»
