This was a great place to stay! We picked it pretty randomly — wanted to check out the area, found a LivingSocial deal for two nights at this B&B, snapped it up – and ended up entirely happy with our choice. The décor fit the theme of the place and was attractive and well-placed. We enjoyed coming around a corner and finding a wooden cradle tended by near-life-sized dolls, for example, and stopping to check out all the old photos hung on most of the walls. We started to get a better sense of local history just by walking through our B&B! Pretty cool. The room was cozy and attractive, complete with«amana blue» walls and a lovely quilt on the bed. The bed was very comfortable, and the room included a writing table, which I always notice and appreciate. I like having a place to set up my laptop, even if I never end up actually USING the thing! Also, I’m a sucker for looking through all the local brochures and maps, and it’s nice to have a surface for that. The room had a coffee maker and they supplied coffee, along with sugar and everything else you’d need for a decent cup or two(but seriously, don’t miss the coffee served at breakfast. It was AWESOME, and I keep kicking myself for not asking exactly what it was!). I liked the shampoo and soap provided, which was great — usually I’m not a big fan of what most hotels/B&Bs carry, but these smelled great and didn’t bother my(annoyingly sensitive) skin. Makeup remover and towels specifically for makeup removal were also provided, which was a nice touch. There was a wall-mounted TV in the room — being up high, it didn’t take up much space or take away from the charm of the room, but made it possible to lounge on the bed and watch a movie. Lots of channels available. Joy and Ron were super nice. Joy gave us a map of the area and suggestions about possible places to check out. She spent most of breakfast in the kitchen(and wow, the breakfast was fantastic!), while Ron chatted with us and other guests out in the dining room. They were both great to talk to, and I’m pretty sure we’re taking Ron’s advice on how to buy our next car! Haha. I LOVED the dining room, by the way — so pretty, lots of wood work and warm colors, just a great place to sit and enjoy coffee or tea and some amazing breakfast. There’s a picture of the room on here, so be sure to check that out. Last but certainly not least, everything was clean — clean bedroom, bathroom, dining area, hallways. The cleaning staff’s on top of their game. If you’re heading to the Amanas, I highly recommend staying at this B&B. We had a great time!

Joy and Ron were great! They went out of their way to assure that we had braekfast at 9:30, despite braekfast being over at 9. They are in the process of renovating many of the rooms, ours hadnt yet been touched. Small but cute, it served its purpose. Breakfast of an amazing egg bake and homemade cinnamon rolls made my day! Thanks, Joy and Ron!

Communist Iowa welcomes you! Iowa’s charming Amana colonies, the site of a communal-property semi-Utopian society of German settlers in the 1800’s, is now the state’s number 1 tourist destination. The Heimat is the best B&B in this ring of villages east of Des Moines. The supposedly demure Midwest is actually rancid with experimental communities that sprang up in the 19th century. My hometown, Berlin Heights, Ohio, boasted a free-love colony for years; while Oberlin, my college town, was founded with the radical idea that men and women and blacks and whites should all be educated together.
