The owner of Eight Elements, Jeff, is a great guy with extensive experience working in a camera shop that dealt in used and new equipment, both film and digital. And more importantly than his experience, he’s a photography lover himself. This passion and expertise helps Jeff to really, really know his stuff. Eight Elements carries a small, nicely curated stash of mostly used higher-end digital and film equipment. It’s got cameras you won’t find in most«modern» shops, like Hasselblads and vintage Nikon F film cameras. Jeff’s experience evaluating and selling used cameras(and the fact that he’s an experienced film shooter himself) means you can buy from Eight Elements Camera with confidence, something that can’t be said for buying vintage film gear on FleaBay(I would know; I’ve been burned numerous times buying vintage camera stuff online). Eight Elements Camera also carries a nice selection of lens caps, filters, batteries, and SD/memory cards. It’s always good to have at least one or two shops that carry these essentials for those days you forget something at home on the way to a gig, and it’s a relief to know there’s now another option for that sort of thing in Honolulu. Even better that its a locally-owned small biz rather than a shitty big box retailer. The last(and in my case, the most useful service) Eight Element offers is their consignment service. In the past two years, I’ve found myself using my Canon gear less and less as I transitioned to Fuji X, Sony full-frame(A7R), and Leica M cameras. When Jeff announced Eight Elements, I decided to have him liquidate what was left of my Canon gear. Jeff’s rates are extremely reasonable; his commissions are lower than what you’d pay to sell on eBay, if you count listing fees, transaction fees, shipping costs, Paypal fees, and possibly Paypal CC processing fees. When you consider that you don’t need to deal with flaky Craigslist kooks or eBay customers/shipping, I think consigning at Eight Elements makes a hell of a lot of sense. All told, I trusted Jeff with $ 5k+ of my gear, all equipment that I depend on to make my living. And I’m relying on the proceeds from these sales to reinvest in gear that is essential to my livelihood. Jeff has done an INCREDIBLE job selling off my equipment, he’s an excellent communicator, and best of all he’s managed to exceed my expectations in terms of the resale value. I’m a shitty salesman, and if I had tried to sell this stuff on my own on eBay or whatever I would not have been able to get the same value from my own gear. Don’t expect unrealistic miracles if you’re on the fence about consigning your used stuff, but if you do your research into the FAIR market values of your gear before you bring it in, you will not be disappointed in the least with Jeff’s consignment services. So seriously what are you waiting for?! If you’re in the market for some equipment or looking to liquidate some of your gear, you’ll find Eight Elements Camera to be an awesome, extremely trustworthy, and always friendly place to do biz. Stop on by, talk story with Jeff, geek out on some cameras, and leave happy. :)
