Dr. Gregory Schmidt and his staff are the best in what they do! I am always so blown away by the skill and knowledge of his technicians and the quality of care he provides at every visit!
I was first introduced to Hawaii Eye Institute by a coworker who previously endured a corneal infection that Dr. Schmidt helped treat. My coworker had known that I was looking for an ophthalmologist for my mom because she was constantly complaining of blurred, decreased, and cloudy vision. I went with her to the initial visit and she was nothing but smiles. We were both so pleased with the service we received there from check-​in to check-​out!
During the exam, my mother was given the diagnosis of bilateral cataracts. One of the things that stood out to me most was that Dr. Schmidt took the time to explain what my mother was experiencing and discuss treatment options. He even used visual models to describe the different types of cataracts and gave us educational handouts to take home.
My mother felt so comfortable with Dr. Schmidt that she was certain that she wanted him to perform her cataract surgery. Therefore, we made the appropriate arrangements with the surgical coordinator who kept us well-​informed throughout the whole process.
It has been a few months since cataract surgery for my mom and to this day she describes how colors are brighter and images are clearer. I am forever grateful for Dr. Schmidt and the Hawaii Eye Institute team!

If you’ve not «seen» Dr. Gregory Schmidt for your eye care needs, then you’re slowly going blind. He has ALL the newest equipment and the BEST trained staff.
The process is EXTENSIVE and thorough. I have Glaucoma and Cataracts. I am also terribly near sighted. In other words, I have a bad time seeing, driving, and buy new prescription glasses every year. Well, as of a few months ago, he began selling designer eye glasses. He also can prescribe contact lenses with an assistant doing that task. Although I have bad eyes, he said I can wear them. YES!!!
He performs surgery every Monday with a Tuesday follow-​up. He uses Queen’s Same Day Surgery at the hospital and is early in doing so, so ensure you get there with a Kindle or iPad in hand with movies on it. Queen’s has free WiFi. They also have a little coffee shop.
For me, I’ve had 4 minor surgeries with a laser and my eye pressure went way down. Note: this is an every 5-​year procedure. Never painful and ALWAYS professional. I’ve NEVER met a doctor of any kind that cares about their profession more than Dr. Gregory Schmidt.
He is located in Queen’s POB I. Just look at the sign to the left of the elevators to find his name and office location. If you opt, when visiting his office, BYOS (bring your own snacks) because the shop there is expensive.
«See» him. He’s a John Hopkins doctor and from his care, professionalism, newest equipment, and training… no one is better on Island to care for your eyes. NO ONE.

First I must mention that you and all of your staff are extremely friendly, efficient, knowledgeable, and punctual!
I have been to your office five times with pre-​op and post-​op appointments and have always been seen on time or even a little bit early. This is extremely impressive and shows how efficient and capable you and your staff are at providing the best medical experience possible! There are always lots of patients coming and going with the feel of a very relaxed, proficient and confident ease in the air! Awesome!

Dr. Schmidt has a special gift of a great personality, skill as a top eye surgeon, and is an Assistant Clinical Professor in the Department of Surgery, University of Hawaii at Manoa. I feel he could also teach a class to the next generation of Doctors and current Doctors, on how to run and manage the complete work flow of a medical business practice! I was and still am extremely grateful for the attention to detail as Dr. Schmidt and his assistant took my eye measurements several times. He told me this is to ensure that he implanted the proper lens for the best possible vision. Before my surgery I did lots of research on the internet. I decided to go with the Monofocal IOL lens since it seems to have the best overall results, with the least amount of visual problems of disassociation between the two eyes. Great choice, no problems! My vision was perfect the very next day!
I now have the best eyesight I have ever had! My repaired eye is now my good eye! Dr. Schmidt has also detected a newly forming cataract in my left eye. I am looking forward in the near future to having him fix my left eye also. Thanks again Dr. Schmidt and staff! I am so grateful to have found you!
