Dr Herbert Chinn is awesome. Very polite and understanding Doc. If you need to see a Urologist I highly recommend Dr Herbert Chinn.

I took a family member to see Dr. Chinn and the appointment was extremely disappointing. Dr. Chinn did not examine my family member at all. Instead, we just sat in his office as he reviewed my family member’s medical records on the computer and he actually stated that it would take«at least 40 minutes» to review my loved one’s medical records. Now, having personally worked in healthcare for a very long time on both the West and East Coasts, I do know that physicians should be reviewing their patient’s charts before seeing them(maybe this is not standard practice in Hawaii. I’m not sure!). I made the appointment well in advance(over 2 weeks) and that should be more than enough time to review patient charts before an appointment. It was disappointing to have brought my loved one in only to sit in his office with no examination. It’s important to note that my loved one is an incomplete paraplegic, so any sort of travel means that I need to hire a wheelchair-friendly van. Had I known that my loved one would have NO examination, I would have just requested a phone appointment. Additionally, my loved one needed a urine sample for a lab test and I was told to go upstairs to the laboratory to submit the urine sample. The lab upstairs does NOT collect urine if your loved one has a foley catheter in, or if they are unable to collect their own urine. You will need to collect the urine yourself from your loved one and they do not provide help in urine collection. I ended up going back downstairs to Dr. Chinn’s office where he haughtily collected a urine sample from my loved one. His demeanor was brusque and aloof. Having worked with many physicians, residents, nurses, CNAs and other health care providers, being a caring and empathetic practitioner of medicine is important, particularly for the elderly, and for my loved one, who is newly paraplegic. Subpar manners can mean the difference between a patient who is compliant or non-compliant to a physician’s orders for medication or therapy. honestly, people are more likely to listen to someone who is kind and empathetic versus an asshole(I’m just stating this from real world experience). My contact with Dr. Chinn so far has been disappointing, and I do not know who or how my loved one was referred to him. All I can say is that Dr. Chinn’s bedside manners need improvement. Also, I was told to come in 15 minutes early, but waited 1 hour just to sit in his office.

Years ago when my father first saw him for cancer treatment, I have to admit he was very intimidating. However, in a short time, the person inside the white coat became a source of security and comfort. We believe him an exceptional physician who took exceptional care of our father. Further, he always checked in to assure that mother and family were ok. He became a friend and we spoke of children, families, vacations and shared a few jokes and mutual respect. Also, he has one receptionist who is not only efficient but very professional and respectful. She always remembered dad, calling him by name, leaving him with a smile!

I would have given him a 5 star review but the office staff are rude.
